Chapter 435 White Mouse

Steven kept moving forward, not missing a beat. "Why should we care? As long as there are no zombies near the shelter, we're fine."

In the apocalypse, who had time to worry about others?

Earl nodded. "You got that right."

The group kept a steady pace.

Since they started from the initial station, they didn't have to worry about zombies sneaking up from behind.

All they had to do was keep moving forward, and eventually, they'd run into the horde.

They walked for what felt like forever, passing countless skeletons picked clean.

"Man, these things have some serious chompers! Even the bones are spotless!"

Earl's chatter started up again. Maybe the silence was getting to him, and he wanted to lighten the mood.

"Look at these bones, not a scrap of meat left. Talk about not wasting food."

Henry shrugged. "Maybe it just rotted away."

Earl shot back, "Rotted? In this freezing cold? Ever heard of Zombie meat, Henry? Freeze fresh meat for a year or two, and it's still good to go!"

"Jesus, that's gross."

Earl's joke did the trick, easing the tension a bit.

Fluffy, with its tail down, led the way. Cats have way better senses than humans.

So it was their main scout for finding the horde.

Suddenly, Fluffy's eyes widened, and it started growling.

"Watch out!" Steven quickly raised his gun.

A shadow darted ahead.

Before Steven could shoot, Lily whipped out a knife from her waist and threw it, sending it flying like a bolt of lightning, pinning the shadow to the ground!

Steven lowered his gun. Better not to shoot if they could avoid it, to keep from drawing more attention.

They cautiously approached and gasped at what they saw.

Lily's knife had pinned down a gray rodent.

It was gray all over and, at first glance, looked like a small dog.

But with its long tail and snout, they realized it was a giant rat!

Earl was shocked. "Is it a rat or a cat? "

The rat was twice the size of Fluffy!

Steven took a deep breath. "Mutant rat! Not surprising."

Normal rats, if well-fed, could grow as big as cats.

But this rat was way too big, clearly a mutation.

Steven thought of the skeletons they had seen and suddenly realized, "Those bodies were gnawed by these rats!"

Earl murmured, "So many bodies, there must be a rat horde here!"

This thought darkened everyone's mood.

Especially Lily, who looked uneasy.

Even though she was a tough fighter, girls naturally hated rats.

If a rat horde showed up... At that moment, Fluffy stretched its neck and let out a piercing cry.

The sound was full of menace, a warning of a formidable enemy.

At the same time, squeaks echoed from all corners of the narrow tunnel.

"We've really walked into a rat's nest now!" Steven said, exasperated.

From all directions, giant rats started pouring in like a flood! Some were regular-sized, some as big as small cats or dogs, and among the gray horde, there were even giant white rats the size of piglets!

"Gross!" Lily couldn't help but shout, her hair standing on end.

Steven noticed the rats' eyes were a sinister red.

It was said that this was the eye color of beasts that had eaten human flesh.

No need to guess what these dark sewer creatures had been surviving on.

Fluffy kept growling, its fur bristling.

Even though cats are natural enemies of rats, the sheer number of them made Fluffy's intimidation useless.

Steven said firmly, "Let's clear them out first!"

They came to kill the zombie king, but this was unavoidable, so they had to fight!

Henry and Earl each grabbed a flamethrower and started firing from the front and back!

Killing zombies or rats, it was all the same!

Luckily, these rats, though mutated, weren't as terrifying as zombies.

After burning thousands of rats, the remaining ones immediately retreated beyond the flame's reach.

But these vicious creatures didn't leave; they watched Steven and the others from the shadows.

As soon as the flames died down, they would pounce!

In the darkness, shadows of rats were everywhere, countless in number.

At this rate, who knew when they could be dealt with? Not to mention finding the rat king!

Steven frowned and said to Earl and Henry, "Put away the flamethrowers!"

Though puzzled, they complied immediately.

As soon as the flames died down, the horde let out eerie squeaks and surged forward like two gray rivers!

Steven stood in the middle of the tunnel, spreading his hands forward and backward.

"Double Dimension Door!"

In the next moment, two massive Dimension Doors appeared on either side of the tunnel, blocking it completely.

The horde surged into the extradimensional space, not a single one reaching the group.

Lily let out a big sigh of relief and patted her sturdy chest.

But the group looked curiously at Steven. "Your Dimension Door... upgraded?"

Steven nodded, replying, "I've been studying the use of Dimension Door. After the last big battle, I can now use two Dimension Doors simultaneously."

"Convenient." Lily remarked.

Having two doors meant two directions of invincible defense.

Though not absolute defense, in a large-scale battle, the improvement was more than double!

In this terrain, for instance, it was absolute defense!

The horde crazily surged into the extradimensional space.

These cunning creatures, seeing their kind disappear ahead, slowly sensed danger.

But the front rats, trying to stop, were pushed forward by those behind into the extradimensional space.

They let out miserable howls to warn their kind.

After countless rats were sacrificed, the remaining ones sensed the danger and stopped advancing.

They watched Steven and the others in the tunnel warily, like a gray river cut in half.

Among the horde, a giant white rat let out urgent squeaks.

Then all the giant rats quickly turned and retreated.

Soon, the rats in the shadows disappeared completely.

They knew they had encountered a formidable enemy and dared not attack again.
