Chapter 517 Emergency 24 Hours

Emberwick Base was totally swamped by the zombie horde.

They roared and gathered outside the underground shelter of Emberwick Base, trying to break down the shelter's door in various ways.

Luckily, the zombies' attacks were in vain. This was a military base ready for war, and even missile attacks would need multiple rounds to do any real damage.

The folks inside the shelter a chance to chill out a bit.

But, given the current mess, getting out of the shelter was a real pain.

Even though the investigation team members were top-notch soldiers, they could only handle tens of thousands of zombies at best.

But there were hundreds of thousands of zombies outside, including a bunch of Bronze Elite Zombies with combat power like Psychics, and Bronze Flying Elite Zombies that could fly.

With all this, there was no way they could win.

Otha frowned hard and suddenly started coughing like crazy.

His usually pale face looked even paler now, like he could drop any second, and his lips had turned blue.

"Otha, you okay?"

The folks around him looked at Otha with worry.

Otha waved his hand. "I'm fine! Looks like we gotta rely on some outside help now!"

A smile popped up on his lips, even though the bloodstains on the corners of his mouth were still there.

"Now that they're all gathered together, we can ask for airstrike support from headquarters!"

Megan's spirits lifted. "You mean we can have Silvercrest District launch missiles here?"

Nothing beats that. With hundreds of thousands of zombies outside, one missile could wipe out a huge chunk of them!

Otha nodded. "At this point, it's our only shot!"

They were backed into a corner, and there was no way to clear out such a massive zombie horde.

Even though Otha was super proud, he wouldn't mess around with his and his people' lives.

Otha pulled out his satellite phone and started contacting the top brass in Silvercrest District.

With his rank, he could directly reach the highest commander of Silvercrest District, Ian.

It didn't take long for the call to go through.

Otha laid out the situation to Ian. "We need backup! There are hundreds of thousands of zombies outside, totally surrounding our shelter."

Silvercrest District headquarters, Blizzard City.

This city, wrapped in huge gray walls, was snowing like crazy. The outer walls of the command center were made of thick bulletproof glass, letting folks inside the high rooms see the scene of Blizzard City clearly.

In front of the glass wall stood a tall soldier in his fifties.

He wore a green military uniform, with shiny epaulets on his shoulders, and his graying hair was neatly combed.

His face was sharp like a knife, and his piercing eyes were like a hawk's.

He was the top commander of Silvercrest District, Commander Ian Peterson!

When he heard Otha's report, Ian's face got serious.

Starlight City was only about 200 miles from Blizzard City. If the zombie crisis there blew up, it would hit Blizzard City in just a few days.

At first, Ian hadn't taken the whole zombie thing seriously.

He had only sent one of his best investigation teams to handle the problem there. But unexpectedly, Otha and his team got stuck there and had to ask for help from HQ.

It's worth noting that the seven members of that team were all top-tier Psychics from Blizzard City!

"Hold on a sec!" Ian said, turning to the back of the command room, where a huge display screen was mounted on the wall.

He calmly said, "Show the surroundings of Emberwick Base shelter!"

The AI quickly pulled up satellite images of the area.

In the video, zombies gathered like ants on the vast snowy plains, covering an area of about 6 square miles!

After some calculations, the AI provided specific numbers. "The number of zombies in the image is 395,861. Among them, 395,521 are humanoid zombies, and 340 are large zombies."

Ian was floored. That many zombies was like a massive war!

Even using missiles, it would be tough to clear such a large area and number of zombies.

Ian's expression was super serious; the situation was way worse than he thought.

He picked up the satellite phone and said to Otha, "There are too many zombies; it would take hundreds of missiles to kill them all!"

Hearing Ian's words, Otha got the message right away.

Missiles were strategic weapons for the military district, and they were tough to make nowadays. Ian couldn't use a ton of missiles to wipe out hundreds of thousands of zombies.

"To clear so many zombies, the best way is to use The Grim Reaper's Sigh!" Ian's voice was like it came from an iron pipe, low, buzzing, cold, and hard.

"The Emberwick Base shelter is 564 feet underground, with super strong defenses. I plan to directly deploy The Grim Reaper's Sigh there. This way, we can totally wipe out these zombies!"

Ian made the call without hesitation to use the ultimate weapon there.

Otha's eyes widened upon hearing this. "But that would turn the whole Starlight City into a wasteland!"

Ian coldly replied, "Aren't there only a few living people left in Starlight City? Sacrificing a few now to stop the zombie crisis from spreading to other cities is the smartest move."

Otha knew Ian was right.

Right now, the number of living people in Starlight City might only be in the tens of thousands; deploying The Grim Reaper's Sigh was definitely the wisest choice.

However, it also meant they would be left behind. If Starlight City was hit by The Grim Reaper's Sigh, it would be unlivable for humans; Otha and his team had to stay in the shelter for at least twenty years until the radiation cleared.

But the supplies in the shelter wouldn't last that long at all, which meant they'd all die in the dark underground!

Otha knew that relying on the district was a lost cause at this point.

"Mr. Peterson, please give us some time! I want to make one last attempt!"

Ian was quiet for a moment before saying in a low voice, "Alright, I'll give another 24 hours. After that, no matter you succeed or not, I'll deploy the The Grim Reaper's Sigh."

Ian knew that if Otha and the local forces in Starlight City couldn't fix the zombie problem within 24 hours, giving them more time would be pointless.

As the top commander of Silvercrest District, he wouldn't let a potential crisis spread to the entire South, or even the whole country.
