Chapter 82 Food for the Neighbors
Steven arrived at the Walmart in the economic development zone.
After arriving, he could only see a rooftop.
He broke the glass above and used a climbing rope to lower himself inside.
Once inside, the remnants of the mall's former bustling scenes were still faintly visible.
The circular mall had stores displaying exquisite goods.
Expensive clothing, shoes, and various household items were now worthless, and he could take whatever he wanted.
Steven selected some useful stores and stuffed everything into his extradimensional space.
The supermarket was on the basement level.
After gathering supplies, he headed downstairs.
As he expected, since the place was far from human habitation, the shelves were still fully stocked.
However, the quality was quite disappointing.
Part of the mall had collapsed under the weight of the snow, letting in cold air, which covered the shelves with frost.
The cold had ruined all the food.
Some snacks and biscuits even had layers of ice on them.
Especially in the vegetable section, the produce wasn't rotten but was severely dehydrated and likely tasteless.
The meat section was relatively better, with everything frozen solid but still inedible.
As for the fish tanks, they had burst from the ice, so eating fish was out of the question.
In normal times, this food would be considered trash.
Steven shrugged, "Even if this stuff were free, I wouldn't eat it!"
He didn't even bother to store them in his extradimensional space.
He wasn't lacking supplies, so why he took this inferior stuff?
However, it didn't matter.
Even if the food quality was poor, to those neighbors who hadn't eaten properly in a long time, it would be a top-tier delicacy!
Steven took out two large duffel bags from his space and casually threw in some wilted vegetables and meat.
He also added some bread and biscuits that had expanded due to moisture.
He quickly filled the two bags.
He decided not to move the other items for now, leaving them in case they could save someone else's life later. He didn't need to take them.
After finishing, Steven glanced at his Rolex.
The watch was designed for cold conditions and still worked in extremely low temperatures.
The time might not be accurate, but it was close enough.
The Rolex showed it was 3:30 PM.
It would take him about an hour to get back to Sunshine Community.
Steven didn't waste any time.
He could always come back later, and no one else could compete with him. He'd explore other places gradually.
Steven left the supermarket with his supplies and rode his snowmobile back.
By the time he returned to Sunshine Community, it was getting dark.
The sound of the engine was particularly noticeable in the quiet neighborhood.
As soon as he arrived, faces appeared in the windows of various buildings, staring intently at him.
In Building 26, on the 15th floor, the leader of the Rapids gang, Owen, squinted his eyes, staring at the new snowmobile.
Half of his face was burned, making him look even more menacing.
That night, although Owen had escaped with several other men, his face was burned, leaving him with a current appearance.
"If we had a machine that can run in the snow like that, we could go out and find food instead of eating that sour meat."
A fat man next to him glanced and said, "Mr. White, I know what it is. It's a snowmobile."
Owen's eyes were fixed on Steven's snowmobile, and he said in a deep voice, "Whatever it is, we need to take it!"
Owen wasn't the only one thinking that.
Everyone watching Steven had the same thought.
After more than half a month of isolation, many were already going crazy, and the rest were on the brink of madness or death.
They needed to leave and find food and space to survive.
The heavy snow had been a barrier.
But Steven's snowmobile reignited their hope.
Steven could feel the greed and naked killing intent in those gazes.
But he touched the gun at his waist and felt reassured by the weapons and equipment he had found today.
After getting off the snowmobile, Steven looked up and saw the neighbors in Building 25 also staring at him excitedly.
Their eyes were fixed on the two duffel bags he brought back.
Steven smirked and pretended to drive the snowmobile to the underground garage.
Out of everyone's sight, he stored the snowmobile in his space.
Then he carried the two duffel bags back.
The bags were heavy, leaving deep footprints, which made the neighbors in Building 25 even more excited, some even shouting from their windows.
Owen and his men next door were also very jealous.
"Mr. White, could that be food?" The fat man excitedly pointed at Steven.
"Of course! What else would he be looking for, a woman?" Owen scolded.
The Rapids gang workers nearby swallowed hard and gathered around.
"Food?"
"He found food outside? Great, there's still food out there. We're saved!"
"Stop talking, let's kill him and take everything, including his vehicle!"
A group of people shouted with red eyes.
Owen pondered for a moment and said coldly, "Don't rush. This must be the Steven who killed Andrew."
"He's ruthless. Last time, he killed many of our brothers. We need to be careful. Also, he has a gun. If we attack, we need to do it quietly!" Owen was very cautious.
Although the two buildings were close, they were still about 200 feet apart.
Running through the thick snow would make them easy targets!
So, although they wanted Steven's supplies, they didn't act impulsively.
But where there are calm people, there are also impulsive ones.
Some workers were unhappy with Owen's plan.
They discussed and decided that if they didn't act now, they'd lose their chance once Steven got inside.
So, a few of them, secretly armed with knives and wrenches, went downstairs.
Steven, carrying the supplies, entered the building and texted Henry to let him know he was back and needed help.
In fact, Henry had already heard the snowmobile and rushed over.
"Steven, you... you found so much stuff!" Henry saw the two large duffel bags, and his eyes were full of surprise and admiration.
With the heavy snow outside, anyone else might have gotten lost.
Professional tasks indeed required professional people!
