Chapter 222 Not as Weak as She Appears
The students didn't want to face the truth and kept bickering. But when Steven waved his gun, they quickly fell in line.
Everyone watched with envy and frustration as Aubrey and Cindy followed Steven. They exchanged looks, clearly upset but unable to do anything.
As Cindy and Aubrey passed Lily, they bowed their heads. "Mrs. Evans, thanks for taking care of us!"
Despite their classmates being awful, Lily was a good teacher who looked out for them. Cindy knew Lily couldn't leave the others, so she didn't ask her to come along.
Lily, too tired to speak, just nodded. Cindy and Aubrey then followed Steven.
After they left, Lily struggled to stand. "Follow them!" she said. "I'm hurt, and that monster's not doing well either. Now's our chance to find a way out."
The students realized this was their only shot at survival. Two girls helped Lily, and the group followed Steven.
They had tried to leave before but got lost in the monster's tunnels. With Steven leading, they felt safer.
Earl noticed the group following and asked Steven, "What do we do about them?"
Steven laughed. "Feeling sorry for them?"
"Not really," Earl replied.
"Want to get rid of them? You could collapse the tunnels and bury them," Steven suggested.
Earl was shocked. "No, I don't have anything against them."
Steven shrugged. "Then just ignore them. We can't support that many people."
Earl agreed and kept following Steven. The marks Steven had made on the way in now guided them out.
Once outside, Steven pulled out two snowmobiles. "You ride with Henry," he told Earl.
Earl frowned. "A motorcycle? It's freezing!"
Steven handed him a helmet. "How about now?"
"Much better!" Earl said, hopping into Henry's sidecar.
Steven lifted Cindy into the passenger seat and put away her wheelchair. Aubrey sat in the back.
"Let's go! We're heading back!" Steven honked and signaled Henry to start.
The snowmobiles roared to life and sped away from Innovation Academy.
Lily and the others soon emerged from the snow tunnel, hoping to follow Steven. But all they saw was exhaust in the distance.
"Where do we go now?" a girl asked, looking lost. All around them was endless white snow.
At least underground, they had shelter and food. Now, they had nothing.
Warren stepped up, smiling as he pulled out his phone. "Leave it to me!"
Outside, there was a signal. He planned to call his powerful dad to send help and take them to West Mountain Base.
Meanwhile, Cindy and Aubrey sat comfortably in the warm car, finally relaxing after being trapped and attacked by that monster for over a month.
Seeing their dirty faces, Steven smiled and handed them two bottles of water, some chocolate bars, and bread. "Eat up, but take it slow. You don't want a stomachache now."
Aubrey's eyes teared up. "Mr. Rogers, you're so kind! Thank you!"
Cindy, looking a bit fragile, politely thanked Steven before eating, even though she was starving.
Steven glanced in the rearview mirror, his smile widening.
After they finished eating and were resting, Steven started chatting. "Cindy, you're really amazing!"
Cindy looked puzzled. "Me? I'm not amazing at all."
She smiled slightly. "I've always been a burden. If it weren't for Aubrey, I'd be dead by now."
Aubrey laughed. "We're best friends, no need to be polite!"
Steven smiled faintly. "Is that so? But I think you're more amazing."
"Why do you say that?" Cindy asked, curious. Aubrey leaned in, also puzzled.
Steven explained, "You've had polio since childhood, your legs are immobile, and you can only sit in a wheelchair. Yet, under the threat of that monster, you survived. Isn't that amazing?"
Before Cindy could respond, Steven continued, "You might say it's luck or Aubrey's protection. But that monster attacked at least a dozen times in over a month, right?"
"Once is luck, twice is luck, but three or five times? That's not just luck. For you to survive this long, it's definitely not a coincidence." He smiled at Cindy. "Am I right?"
Cindy's pure smile slowly faded. "Mr. Rogers, you're really sharp! No wonder you survived and can take care of my two silly sisters."
Her smile turned twisted, and her demeanor changed, like she was a different person.
Aubrey's eyes widened. "What are you talking about?"
Steven smiled. "It's not that I'm particularly smart, but something's fishy here. Especially when your teacher was fighting the monster, you told me to stop their fight."
"If you wanted to protect your teacher, you should have asked me to help her kill the monster. But you didn't, which means you wanted to protect the monster, not your teacher."
"So, based on these points, you've been taking care of that monster all along. Am I right?"
