Chapter 277 They Kill Themselves
The next morning, just as the sky was starting to brighten, Steven got jolted awake by Fluffy's racket.
He shot up from the couch, eyes wide open.
For the past few days, he'd been crashing in his clothes, ready for anything.
He walked over to the monitor and, sure enough, saw some action near the low hill.
"Trying to sneak up on me while I'm asleep? Nice try!"
Early mornings were prime time for deep sleep, so Charles figured it was the perfect moment to strike.
Even though Charles wasn't sure if it would work, he thought it was worth a shot.
Steven saw the commotion and bolted upstairs.
With such a massive load of explosives, it would take them a while to get everything set up.
I mean, we're talking 1,100 pounds of explosives here—one wrong move and those guys would be toast.
The demolition team was being super careful.
Each person lugged 110 pounds of explosives on their back, then set it down to start assembling, installing detonators, and setting timed fuses.
"Better not miss!" Charles joked to Shane, "If we do, I'll have to make a few more trips for more explosives!"
Shane laughed. "Relax. I was the grenade-throwing champ in our military district competition!"
They seemed pretty chill about the whole thing.
To them, cracking the shelter was like finding Steven's weak spot.
Once they broke through, Steven would be easy pickings.
After all, they were top-tier close combat experts!
And they could afford to mess up; if they failed once, they'd just try again and again until they took over the shelter.
Steven went up to the second floor and grabbed his binoculars to check out the low hill.
Thanks to the one-way glass, Charles and his crew saw the shelter as pitch black and couldn't see inside or spot Steven.
But Steven had a clear view of them.
They kept a distance of about 7,800 feet from Steven.
They knew he was a deadly accurate sniper, so they stayed far enough away.
But they didn't know Steven's skills went beyond just accuracy.
With his Supernatural ability, his attack range and power were off the charts.
Right now, Steven's Dimension Door was fully repaired, and he was ready to strike back.
But he didn't rush; he wasn't about to open the window and risk more damage from an explosion. He was biding his time, waiting for them to make the first move.
Steven kept an eye on the activity on the low hill from behind the glass.
Charles suddenly narrowed his eyes and looked in Steven's direction.
Through the one-way glass, it felt like their gazes met in mid-air.
Steven squinted. "Man, that guy's got some scary intuition."
Charles, arms crossed, said with a smirk, "He's watching us."
Shane and Clay followed Charles's gaze.
Charles's intuition was always spot-on, even from such a distance.
"What’s he doing? Waiting to die or making a last-ditch effort?" Clay said, his eyes a strange black. If it weren't for his Caucasian features, you'd think he was mixed race.
"Who cares! Maybe he's scared! But what good does that do?" Shane grinned, his strong arms tucked into his pockets. "His Supernatural Ability can't stop TNT. All he can do is watch us blow up his place."
Charles chimed in, "If possible, I'd like to recruit him. His ability has serious potential."
Even though it was a brief encounter, Steven's skills had caught Charles's interest.
Shane frowned and asked, "What about our fallen brothers?"
"Soldiers dying in battle is our fate. But this guy is someone Mr. Martin specifically wants alive. Mr. Martin knows how valuable a powerful Psychic is to the organization now," Charles said calmly.
Hearing Peter's name, Shane immediately shut up, not daring to argue.
Shane glanced at the explosives being assembled and silently hoped Steven would get blown to bits.
After the demolition team finished their prep, they had another giant bundle of explosives ready.
They planned to use the same method to blow up part of the shelter like they did yesterday.
Shane transformed into a giant ape, and he and Charles lifted the explosives and hurled them towards the shelter.
Steven watched the massive explosives flying through the air, took a deep breath, and opened his right hand in front of him.
As the explosives flew halfway, Steven decided not to wait any longer.
If they got any closer, they’d explode, and he wasn’t about to take that risk.
"Dimension Door!" Steven shouted. Luckily, no one was around to hear him, or he'd feel pretty embarrassed.
A massive door appeared in the sky above the shelter, invisible and intangible, but Steven could sense it clearly. But this time, he wasn't planning to bring the explosives inside.
Previous experiments had shown that the Extradimensional Space couldn't handle the explosive energy of such a massive amount of TNT.
But he could release it!
Most of the explosive force from the last blast was still stored in the Extradimensional Space, and Steven had saved that unstable energy for this moment.
Then, a thunderous explosion echoed.
But this wasn't from the TNT going off—it was the energy erupting out of the Extradimensional Space!
The massive shockwave blew the explosives that were supposed to hit the shelter right back!
And, of course, they flew back towards the special forces members.
The smiles on Charles and the others' faces quickly vanished.
"Take cover!" he roared, dropping to the ground.
The 1,100 pounds of explosives, pushed by the surging airwaves, flew back to the low hill and rolled a short distance on the ground.
TNT was pretty stable, so even with that impact, it didn't explode mid-air.
But in a few seconds, when the timer hit zero, the blasting cap would set it off.
The next moment, a towering fireball engulfed everything in sight, and the intense explosion melted all the snow within thousands of feet.
The heatwave instantly reached the low hill, blowing away a few people who hadn't taken cover in time!
And they were the lucky ones.
Behind a large cover at the foot of the hill, many soldiers were lurking, ready to storm the shelter at any moment.
They were only a few thousand feet away from the explosion point of the 1,100 pounds of TNT.
The towering flames and merciless shockwave quickly spread from the explosion point!
Those soldiers who didn't know what was happening were engulfed by the high temperatures in the blink of an eye!
Special forces uniforms, bulletproof vests, weapons—all incinerated in the intense heat.
Their skin and flesh were charred instantly.
The flames swept around, and the special forces members ambushing at the foot of the hill, waiting to attack, were almost entirely wiped out!
Steven watched the flames from a distance, and the effect was so good he couldn't stop laughing.
Initially, he just wanted to use the absorbed energy to deflect the bomb so it wouldn't harm his shelter.
But seeing this effect, he thought it must have wiped out quite a few of those special forces members.
"Hot weapons are indeed powerful!" Steven couldn't help but exclaim. "I use them better than they do!" Steven had only released a portion of the energy, and the main damage was actually caused by the massive explosives.
The success of this experiment meant he could keep using this method to deal with them.
Unless they were willing to risk more deaths, this throwing tactic was off the table.
The temperature near the low hill skyrocketed to unimaginable levels.
A large area of ground at the foot of the hill turned to charcoal.
Behind the low hill, a massive ice surface suddenly cracked.
Clay stood up weakly.
Luckily, he had quickly created an ice barrier to block most of the heat; otherwise, they would have suffered casualties.
But maintaining the ice barrier continuously was also very draining for him.
Charles broke through the ice and walked to the low hill. Seeing the horrifying scene at the foot of the hill, he was completely stunned!
The others also crawled out one by one to check the explosion site.
Everyone was dumbfounded, not knowing what to say to describe the scene before them.
They only saw that the explosives, which were supposed to fall in front of the shelter according to plan, were pushed back by a strange force in mid-air, flying back towards them.
From such a distance, the explosive power was incomparable.
The shockwave alone couldn't affect the shelter much.
Instead, it was their direction that bore the brunt of the explosion!
This operation had failed!
Not only had it failed, but it was a disastrous failure, causing many special forces soldiers to die from their own explosives!
The once confident faces were now filled with confusion and dejection.
The sudden change left everyone unsure of what had happened.
They were so taken aback that anger didn't even cross their minds.
Special forces captain Charles looked at the charred bodies below, his body trembling slightly.
These people were his brothers!
They had survived the apocalypse, laughing and joking just moments ago, but in the blink of an eye they were gone, vanished without a trace.
"No!" Charles roared in pain, his eyes bloodshot, looking like a madman.
Shane also knelt on the ground in pain, angrily smashing the ground.
He didn't know what to say, only feeling heartbroken.
Anyway, he couldn't blame his opponent for being too ruthless in war, right?
It was their own method to deal with Steven, used against them by Steven.
If they had to blame someone, they could only blame themselves for being too foolish to come up with such a plan.
But how could they have imagined that Steven would counterattack in such a way?
