Chapter 382 Threatening
Steven's words instantly enraged Megan!
After all, she was the leader of one of the largest organizations in Starlight City. If she were timid and cowardly, she wouldn't have made it to this position.
His threat made her slam her fist on the table!
"You're full of yourself!" she barked. "Wipe us out? You think you've got the juice for that? I don't buy for a second you've got missiles on tap. If you were that powerful, Starlight City would've been yours already! You really think I won't off those students right now and ship their corpses back to you?"
Lily, standing nearby, frantically gave Steven a look.
Steven's expression hardened, and he said in a low voice, "Don't do something stupid. Those poor saps are worthless to us. Killing them won't change a damn thing."
Megan smirked. "Doesn't sound like it to me. Seems like you're pretty worried about them."
Steven frowned, looking troubled.
This made Lily feel deeply guilty.
She knew that Steven was so conflicted because he was trying to help her.
Originally, he didn't need to care about the lives of those students.
'Thank you, Steven! You really are a good person,' Lily thought to herself.
Steven said, "Those students mean a lot to my friend, but they're nothing to you. Let's cut a deal. What's it gonna take for you to let them go?”
Megan's grin widened. She was sure she'd hit Steven's weak spot.
"Hmm, I haven't figured it out yet! Let me think on it," Megan said, propping her long legs on the table as she started plotting how to play Steven.
Demand Steven's life?
That's impossible; the only outcome would be an all-out war.
Better to test his limits first.
Megan laid out her terms: "Steven, you took out my cousin Christian and his crew. Now your people are in my hands. If you want them back, trade them for your supplies. I know you've got the stash from the southern warehouse. I'm not asking for all of it—just half. Hand it over, and I'll return your people. We'll call it even. Deal?"
If Steven agreed to this, he'd be a total idiot.
It'd also prove that after the fight with West Mountain Base, he's running on empty—too weak to take on Emberwick Base.
Faced with this, Steven directly refused: "Impossible! Don't even think about it."
Megan's voice turned icy. "If you're not on board, then it's war. You think I'm bluffing?"
Steven laughed. "You think you're stronger than West Mountain Base?"
Megan smirked. "After taking them on, your crew's gotta be hurting, right? Plus, you didn't just mess with Emberwick—you crossed Silverlake Base too. I can team up with them and crush you. Think you can handle two bases at once?"
Her tone dripped with cockiness and menace. "I'm only asking for half your supplies—that's a sweet deal. Don't wait until it's too late to regret this."
Steven kept his cool. "So that's your game? You've got no clue what we're capable of. If you're really itching to get yourself killed, bring it on! I'll take you down and knock that cocky attitude right out of you."
Then he shifted gears. "But leave the students out of this. They're useless. Just hand them back to me."
The more Steven pushed, the more Megan's suspicion grew.
Why was he so hung up on those students?
Were they actually that important?
"You think I'll just return them because you say so? That'd make me look weak." Megan scoffed. "Unless you agree to my terms, we're done here."
Steven frowned, "Megan! Don't push it too far. Those students are innocent. If you have any issues, come at me!"
But inside, he was seething: Just off those students already! Do you know how exhausting it is to keep this charade up? For the love of—just do it!
"Looks like they mean a lot to you. The more you beg, the less I'll let them go! I'll make their lives a living nightmare—and it'll all be on you, Steven!" Megan grinned, convinced she'd hit a nerve. "Enjoy the guilt and misery!"
Steven snapped, "Don't push it! Those students matter to someone I care about. Lay a finger on them, and you'll regret it. If you make them suffer, I'll make you pay!"
Megan said unhappily, "Are you threatening me? Watch me prove you wrong!"
The call dropped.
Megan hung up, her tone leaving no doubt—Warren and the others were in for hell.
Steven slammed the table in frustration. "We can't just sit around! We're heading to Emberwick Base now to get them out!"
He turned to Earl, Henry, and the others. "This isn't like the West Mountain raid. The odds are against us, so you all should stay back. This isn't your fight, and I don't want you dragged into it."
Everyone present was shocked to hear Steven say this.
Those who knew him well sensed something off, but seeing him ready to charge into West Mountain Base like a man on a suicide mission, they couldn't just stand by.
A crowd quickly moved to block him.
"Steven, don't be impulsive! Going now won't save anyone, and you might end up dead!"
"That's a force not much weaker than West Mountain Base! And they are prepared; going there is just suicide."
Earl whispered in a voice only the two of them could hear, "Captain, that's enough. If you keep acting, they'll figure it out."
Steven pretended to struggle a bit, then suddenly sighed. "They've gone too far! They actually captured Lily's students."
He punched the sofa hard. "I promised Lily I would take care of those students!"
Lily, seeing Steven risking his life for her, was deeply moved.
She walked over and gently placed her right hand on Steven's shoulder. "Steven, don't be impulsive. This isn't your fault; if anyone is to blame, it's me for not protecting them well."
