Chapter 47 The Arrow of Tetanus
Yes, some people gradually began to realize Steven's abnormality.
In this icy post-apocalyptic world, everyone was starving and freezing. Even those who usually had supplies at home were struggling.
But only he, well-fed and warm, even chose to install a fireplace in Starlight City, a southern city!
With sturdy security doors, it was clear he was prepared for such situations.
Paul sneered, resentfully saying, "If that's the case, Steven is even more detestable! Clearly knowing the snow disaster was coming, yet only thinking of himself, not bothering to notify the neighbors in advance!"
"Phooey!" He spat vehemently.
Due to his personal vendetta with Steven, Paul never missed an opportunity to slander him.
Grace and the others still frowned, ignoring Paul.
After all, if they were in Steven's shoes, they would prioritize themselves and their families, not caring about the lives of others!
"The question is what should we do next? If prying the door open doesn't work, can we just break it down directly?"
Grace asked, looking at Paul, Larry, and Zachary.
These three men were among the few men in their group, the main force if they had to force their way in.
After a whispered discussion, they left via the stairs again.
Steven held a gun in his left hand and a crossbow in his right, calmly observing their departure.
Steven could have easily shot and killed two of them. However, he was in no rush; life had become too mundane, and he needed some excitement.
So, he wanted to see how they planned to break in.
This was also preparation for dealing with more formidable opponents in the future.
After a while, they returned.
This time, they brought a large, thick piece of wood, seemingly dismantled from a bed.
Several women stood by with umbrellas, preventing Steven from splashing them with cold water.
The three men lifted the wood and rammed it towards the door!
The noise was deafening, causing the walls to tremble. But Steven remained unconcerned; Only by using a Hulk-like force could the 8-inch steel door be broken.
Paul, Larry, and Zachary relentlessly pounded the door.
Steven sat on the sofa, eyes fixed on their attempts, monitoring the house's changes through a mobile app.
The IronShield Security Company had designed this app for users to monitor their homes' movements at any time.
He remained vigilant, holding his weapons steady. If he sensed any danger, he would act swiftly.
However, despite Larry and the others' efforts, the door remained sturdy, with only a few white spots appearing, but no dents at all!
After five minutes, everyone was dumbfounded.
"How...how thick is this door?"
"Even a bank vault door isn't that sturdy, are they?"
"Whose house would use such a door?"
Larry and the others were almost in despair, roaring in anger.
It was the sound of defiance and despair.
Seeing this through the surveillance, Steven smiled slightly, feeling much more confident about the quality of his safe house.
"Alright, it's time to teach you a lesson."
Steven stood up, pocketed his gun, and opened an iron box.
Inside were 20 crossbow bolts, all peculiarly rusted. These alloy bolts were hard to rust naturally, but these 20 were all deliberately rusted by Steven.
Even a slight scratch could lead to tetanus, which was deadly in this environment without medical care. The wound would fester and rot, forcing the victim to choose between amputation or a painful death!
This knowledge was gained from Andrew's experience, whom Steven had learned from. Although Andrew's leg was useless, he managed to survive through unconventional means.
But if he were to be hit by these tetanus-laden arrows again, Steven wondered how Andrew would cope!
A devilish smile played on Steven's lips as he climbed to the shooting hole.
Alice and the others held umbrellas, unable to see clearly below.
Steven paid no mind, shooting directly under the umbrellas!
Whether they died or not was up to luck, but survival was preferable!
The tetanus-laden arrow pierced through the umbrella, followed by a piercing scream.
Without waiting for their reaction, Steven swiftly loaded a second arrow, not bothering to aim since they were all clustered together.
The second arrow flew out, another scream echoing.
Steven reloaded quickly, aiming.
Only then did the group realize the danger and scattered in panic.
Steven remained calm, targeting non-vital areas like arms and thighs.
Among the remaining six, three were hit, one taking two arrows.
However, before Steven could shoot again with his slow-loading crossbow, they had fled to his blind spot.
Steven shrugged.
No matter; those individuals were as good as dead, suffering a miserable and painful demise.
As for the others, Steven had all the time to play with them.
Time was on Steven's side.
Steven was cautious, not willing to take even a one in a million chance of getting hurt.
"The consumption of crossbow bolts is a big issue!" Steven furrowed his brow, contemplating long-term solutions.
He had initially bought 300 crossbow bolts and 300 arrows. After use, it was challenging to retrieve them outside.
Though there were plenty left, he had to consider their consumption!
After some thought, a sudden idea struck him.
He opened the extradimensional space, rummaging inside until he found what he needed!
There were many ball bearings that could be fired from the crossbow. Even the glass marbles, though less lethal than steel balls, were potent when shot from a professional-grade crossbow.
If he ran out of bolts, there were plenty of metal items inside that he could dismantle and repurpose.
Steven felt relieved.
"With these items, I can stay in this house forever!"
While he felt comfortable, some others were in dire straits.
Alice and seven others had hoped to seize Steven's house with their numbers.
But after all their efforts, they not only failed to seize anything but also lost a member. Three were hit by crossbow bolts, and they had to retreat in disarray.
They didn't even dare to retrieve Louis' body.
