Chapter 500 The Reality of the Apocalypse

Clio said, "I found someone better for me. He can give me a better life. He's stronger, can protect me, and provide for me."

"If you were in my shoes, you'd do the same."

Even though she wasn't even twenty yet, living through the apocalypse made people grow up fast.

Most folks just want to survive. Love was just a little extra in the apocalypse.

But Delbert couldn't handle it.

He cried out, "No, I wouldn't! Clio, I love you. Can he love you more than I do?"

Clio looked at Delbert, who seemed so naive, and shook her head. "Let's be real. I got close to you because your dad's a priest."

"You're fun and I do care about you, but I can't be with a younger guy who can't protect me. Talking about love now is just fooling ourselves."

Behind Clio, the officer was getting annoyed.

He said coldly, "Alright, time to go! This goodbye has gone on long enough!"

Clio quickly turned around, putting on her sweet and innocent act for him. "Sorry, honey, for taking so long. Let's go!"

With that, she turned and followed the officer without looking back.

Delbert's eyes widened in fear.

Clio was all he had left! How could he survive without her?

He instinctively reached out to grab her. "Clio, don't leave me. If you go, I'll kill myself!"

Clio's patience snapped.

She angrily pushed Delbert away and said with a harsh look, "Delbert, enough! You're a eunuch now, and you're still dreaming about us?"

The air went still.

"Eunuch?" Steven frowned, confused by Clio's words.

Hearing her, Delbert suddenly looked older.

Clio realized she had gone too far. She lowered her head and said, "I'm sorry."

Then she turned and left with the officer without looking back.

She just wanted to survive. She wasn't wrong.

Delbert stood there, crushed, watching Clio and the officer get into a truck, losing the will to chase after them.

Suddenly, he let out a sound like a wounded animal and ran off.

Steven recognized Delbert. But he didn't know the Chase family well, so he just watched.

Megan, standing nearby, laughed, "This kid hasn't learned from the apocalypse yet? So naive."

"This will be good for him. You can't grow without some pain." Steven didn't mock Delbert.

Who hasn't wanted love while growing up?

But waking up from that dream is always rough and painful.

If you wake up, you grow.

If you don't, you're done for.

Steven said goodbye to Megan, and after a while, he saw Chase and Dione running out anxiously to look for Delbert.

They must've heard about Delbert and were worried something might happen to him.

They knew Delbert too well.

He'd been sheltered by them since he was a kid and had never faced any real setbacks.

So he was always cheerful and a bit naive.

Recently, he'd already taken a hard hit, and his mental state was shaky.

Now that Clio, his emotional anchor, had left him, Chase and Dione were naturally scared he might do something drastic.

They hurriedly asked around about Delbert's whereabouts.

Someone told them Delbert had run out of the camp, heading northwest.

Chase and Dione rushed out and disappeared for a long time.

It wasn't until evening that someone saw them again. But they looked like empty shells—Delbert might be gone.

Yet it was just a typical story. Too many people had died, and everyone was numb.

Regardless of others' lives or deaths, life goes on as usual tomorrow.

Two days later, Steven realized he couldn't gather any more useful info at Snowfall Cult.

After receiving the info from Megan, Steven felt there was no point in sticking around.

So he said goodbye to Otha and the others, planning to head back to the shelter.

After some pleasantries, no one tried to convince him to stay.

But before leaving, Steven found Otha and said, "Mr. Soderberg, can we talk privately?"

Otha looked at him and smiled, "Changed your mind?"

Steven knew he was referring to going to Silvercrest District.

Steven smiled faintly, "It's not about that. I just have some concerns I want to discuss with you."

Otha looked at his team members.

They all looked at Steven with amusement, and Lanny even looked hostile.

They didn't know what Steven wanted.

But Otha nodded. "Alright, let's talk over there!"

The two walked away from the crowd to an abandoned street outside the Snowfall Cult camp.

"There's no one else here. You can spill it now." Otha's tone was still indifferent.

Steven turned to look at his profile, which was paler than the first time they met, even paler than the snow on the ground.

His lips were tinged with blue, making people worry about his health.

Steven knew Otha didn't like small talk, so he got straight to the point.

"Mr. Soderberg, I hope you can stay in Starlight City a bit longer."

Otha looked at Steven, waiting for him to continue.

"I feel this mission ended too easily." Steven sighed.

"From the beginning, we assumed the Zombie Kings had high intelligence."

"So, is it possible they realized we were setting a trap to lure them in? If so, why did they gather in one place for us to eliminate?"

Otha calmly replied, "We've considered that. But mutated corpses are not humans; their intelligence is limited."

"And since that battle, there haven't been any large-scale movements of the zombies, right? We succeeded."
