Chapter 419 They Walked off on Their Own
Steven felt a chill down his spine.
Over a thousand bodies—just gone?
He remembered they were still there yesterday afternoon.
"Maybe someone cleaned up?" Steven muttered, keeping his cool. He grabbed his binoculars and scanned the area again, double-checking to make sure he wasn't seeing things.
But after a thorough search, he confirmed that he wasn't mistaken, nor were the bodies buried under the snow.
The bodies had truly disappeared!
Steven's heart tightened inexplicably.
In the apocalypse, many strange things happen that are hard to explain.
If even living creatures can mutate, could corpses also undergo some kind of transformation?
Steven took a deep breath to calm himself.
He put on his combat gear, prepared his weapons, and pushed open the door to go downstairs.
Nora and Emilia were already preparing breakfast.
The two were chatting and laughing, showing no signs of noticing anything unusual.
Clearly, they hadn't discovered the changes outside.
Steven walked over and greeted them.
Nora looked at Steven in surprise. "Why are you up so early today?"
Usually, unless there was something special, Steven would sleep until nine or ten in the morning.
Of course, it wasn't because he was lazy; he often had important things to do the night before.
"Are you going out?" Emilia asked, noticing his formal attire and wondering what he was up to.
"Nothing much, there's been some changes outside, I'm going to check it out."
Steven glanced out the window and silently walked out the door.
Nora and Emilia, not knowing what had happened, looked puzzled.
But Steven's expression made them a bit nervous too.
Steven stepped outside, holding his gun, and walked step by step towards the former battlefield.
The once densely packed corpses had vanished.
A night of heavy snow had covered many things but couldn't completely erase all traces.
Over a thousand corpses disappearing at the same time would surely leave some clues.
As Steven approached, he finally noticed something was off.
Around the area, under the snow, he could vaguely see numerous footprints of varying depths!
There were so many footprints, it looked like a large troop had passed through.
And the footprints only led away, not towards.
Steven felt a cold shiver race down his spine, like some unseen, malevolent force was lurking right behind him, sending chills through every nerve.
The bodies weren't stolen! They'd gotten up and walked off on their own!
Steven whipped around, but there was nothing there.
His heart hammered in his chest, and he took a couple of deep breaths to steady himself.
Even a hardened killer like Steven, someone who'd stared death in the face more times than he could count, couldn't shake the creeping dread—even fear—that this twisted situation brought.
He took a deep breath and muttered to himself, "What's there to be afraid of? I've killed so many living people, I can definitely kill them twice even if they are ghosts."
Steven followed the faint footprints in the snow.
He saw that the footprints led eastward, disappearing into the distance, with no clue where the bodies had gone.
Steven felt a bit apprehensive and didn't dare to follow alone.
He returned to the shelter, took off his helmet, and panted heavily.
Nora and Emilia, looking tense, quickly asked Steven what he had found.
Steven didn't tell them directly but asked them to gather everyone.
Nora and Emilia called everyone over.
Everyone, dressed lightly, gathered in the living room, looking curiously at Steven in his combat gear.
Steven said, "Don't be afraid of what I'm about to say. Just take a deep breath and stay calm."
His words made everyone nervous, so they followed his instructions and took a few deep breaths.
Then, Steven started, keeping his voice as calm as he could, "Last night, over a thousand corpses outside the shelter vanished. I checked the tracks—looks like they just... walked off on their own."
His tone was even, but the room suddenly felt icy. The women, especially, widened their eyes and instinctively drew closer to each other.
"Steven, don't joke like that! It's too scary," Elinor said, holding his arm.
As a doctor and a firm materialist, she didn't believe in ghosts or anything like that.
Steven shook his head. "I didn't want to believe it either, but the evidence is right there. You can go see for yourselves!"
No one had paid attention to the bodies outside that morning.
Now, they all rushed to the window.
And sure enough, not a single body was in sight!
"How... how is this possible?" Elinor's eyes widened in shock, her mind in a whirl.
Earl swallowed and said to Steven, "Captain, did you collect the bodies and are just messing with us?"
Everyone looked at Steven, hoping it was just a prank.
Steven rolled his eyes. "Do I look that bored?"
His denial only made everyone more frightened.
"What on earth is going on?"
"If one or two bodies were missing, fine, but how could over a thousand disappear overnight!"
After the battle, all the cameras outside had been destroyed, so they couldn't review any footage.
But if some force had done it, moving so many bodies would require transport, and it couldn't have been done so quietly.
While everyone was panicking, Steven became increasingly calm.
He snapped out of his initial confusion.
Since this was an era filled with mutated creatures, strange events weren't so unusual.
It was likely the work of Psychics or mutated creatures.
As the leader of the shelter, he needed to find out the truth to avoid missing any crucial information.
"Finish your breakfast first. Then, anyone who can fight comes with me to check it out. I've tracked the footprints. Follow them, and we'll get some clues," Steven said.
Everyone was equal parts curious and freaked out, itching for answers, so they all nodded and went along with Steven's plan.
Currently, the West Mountain District and Eternal River District were their territory.
Any suspicious events needed to be investigated to prevent future troubles.
So they quickly finished breakfast, and Steven called a few key fighters to gear up and follow the footprints.
