Chapter 291 Sneak Attack
Cox Town had this weird vibe going on.
The villagers were all jittery, their faces looking kinda blank.
Even though they didn't have to go out and work, they still had stuff to do for the special forces.
Like, they had to cook or handle some personal requests from the special forces guys.
Back in the day, these folks were hardcore soldiers with strict discipline. But after the apocalypse, they started losing their humanity bit by bit.
Especially when you get to decide who lives and who dies, your sense of right and wrong gets all messed up.
It was freezing cold, and the place was pretty empty, just a few soldiers on guard duty.
But the long stretch of peace made them think no one would dare attack.
Who were they? They were the top-notch special forces from West Mountain Base!
In all of Starlight City, they were one of the toughest groups around.
For this mission, they were dealing with some coward hiding in a house, too scared to come out.
So, no one expected Steven from the shelter to come out and even sneak around to hit their base.
A soldier on guard was pacing back and forth at the edge of the village with his gun.
Suddenly, he spotted a white figure in the distance.
Looking closer, he saw a captain's gold star on the person's shoulder.
Steven's combat suit was designed like Zane and Brittany's, so it had a captain's insignia too.
The soldier thought the captain from the front line was back and quickly saluted. "Captain!"
The person in the combat suit walked over and nodded slowly.
Just as the guard relaxed, a blade flashed, too quick to see, and slashed his neck.
The guard clutched his neck in shock, then fell to the snow, terrified.
Steven walked over and stabbed his head to make sure he was dead.
"Fourth one. With this, all the guards around Cox Town are dead," Steven said calmly.
Even though he and Fluffy could take out all the special forces in the village, alerting the enemy would make things messy and risky.
It could even draw in captains from across the river, making the situation complicated.
Steven was here to kill, not to show off.
He stored the body in the extradimensional space, and with that, there were no more guards around Cox Town.
He used the snow to clean the blood off himself and then walked into the village like nothing happened.
In the southwest corner of Cox Village, a special forces member suddenly dashed into a snow house.
The man of the house had been conscripted to dig tunnels, leaving only his young wife at home.
Special forces member Finnegan Hayes entered the snow house and immediately covered her mouth to stop her from screaming.
"I've been working hard lately. Help me out!" Finnegan's eyes roamed over her body with a hint of lust.
Even though she was bundled up and her simple face looked pale from the cold, it was enough for the long-deprived Finnegan.
The woman was terrified, trembling all over. "You... you can't do this."
Finnegan impatiently pushed her onto the bed, roughly tearing at her clothes, and threatening, "You'd better cooperate, or there will be serious consequences."
He didn't want to make a big deal out of it.
Even if the higher-ups in the special forces found out, they'd probably just give him a mild reprimand. But being named for something like this would make him lose face in front of his peers.
The woman started to sob softly, knowing she couldn't fight back, so she closed her eyes tightly and let him do what he wanted.
After unbuttoning several layers of thick clothing, Finnegan finally saw her beautiful skin, and his breathing got heavy.
"It's so cold, so cold. Can you cover me with a blanket first?" The woman's skin was exposed, and she was freezing to the point of losing sensation.
"Such a hassle! Even making love in this place is so troublesome, far worse than the base!" he said, a bit annoyed.
But given the situation, he could only make it quick to relieve his stress, and there wasn't much time to enjoy it.
Soon, the room was filled with muffled sobs and whispers.
This caught the attention of a passerby.
The snow house was semi-submerged underground, with no door, and at night they used ice bricks to block it.
But it was daytime, and Finnegan was in a hurry, so he didn't cover it.
The passerby looked down and saw what was happening inside.
He smiled slightly and then slowly walked in. Finnegan, in the middle of his business, heard a noise and turned around.
He saw another special forces guy, fully dressed.
The weird part? The dude was wearing a helmet even though he hadn't been out on a mission.
"Hey man, don't interrupt! If you want a woman, go find your own. I'm not into threesomes," Finnegan laughed, then went back to what he was doing, totally unfazed.
But then, a bright flash of light pierced through his left chest, impaling both him and the woman beneath him, pinning them to the bed!
A long knife had gone through both their bodies and the bed, with hot blood streaming down the blade.
Steven gave a slight tug to pull the knife out, then flicked it to the ground, splattering blood everywhere.
Finnegan, with his heart pierced, died instantly.
The woman beneath him, her lungs punctured, had blood foaming from her mouth and quickly lost all signs of life due to blood loss and the cold.
Steven had to kill her; otherwise, she would have screamed in terror, blowing his cover.
After all, she was from Cox Town, so there was no such thing as innocence.
An enemy's helper was an enemy.
To avoid alerting others, Steven stored the two bodies in the extradimensional space.
Then he casually walked out of the snow house and headed towards where the soldiers from West Mountain Base were stationed.
Cox Town had been peaceful for too long, and the soldiers there had no sense of danger.
In their downtime, they gathered to play cards or handheld games.
Steven had already asked Lily about the soldiers' living quarters, so he knew exactly where to go.
Steven walked through the village openly.
Even though the helmet made him look a bit odd, his white combat suit made people not question his identity.
The only strange thing was the big cat walking beside him—nowadays, cats had mostly become food since they weren't as useful as dogs.
Such a big cat was even rarer.
Steven strolled leisurely to a snow house where some soldiers lived. As he got closer, he could hear the sound of card games inside.
It was clear they were deeply into their game.
Steven walked straight in.
Inside, there were five or six soldiers, four of them playing cards around a table, with two others watching and occasionally commenting. One of the soldiers noticed Steven walking in and casually said, "Don't you feel stuffy wearing that helmet?"
But since it was cold outside, wearing a helmet wasn't all that strange.
Steven didn't respond; he just slowly walked over to them.
The group was so into their game, with rare cigarettes as the stakes, that they didn't pay him any mind.
'Four times speed!'
Steven instantly activated his supernatural ability, and with his right hand, he pulled out Dragon Roar from the extradimensional space.
The bright blade flashed through the air, instantly decapitating two heads!
The large heads rolled onto the table, messing up the game.
The remaining soldiers reacted quickly, but even well-trained soldiers were no match for Steven at four times speed.
Steven moved like a ghost, taking down two more soldiers with swift strikes.
The last two survivors didn't even have time to pull the trigger before a dark shadow flashed past, tearing their throats apart!
Fluffy landed lightly on the table, its eyes gleaming with bloodlust.
In an instant, the six soldiers were wiped out by Steven and Fluffy without making a sound.
Steven stored the six bodies, cleaned up the bloodstains, and walked out of the house, heading to the next one.
The freezing weather made the soldiers reluctant to stay outside, making Cox Town eerily quiet.
This made it easier for Steven to act.
The next house was where the special forces' communication officers lived.
These people weren't strong fighters but had excellent computer skills, responsible for maintaining contact with West Mountain Base and solving various network issues for the special forces.
Inside the room were two female soldiers and a male soldier with gold-rimmed glasses.
Steven walked in, and none of them questioned his identity, saluting him respectfully.
Steven's response was to give them a painless death.
The process was simple: he pretended to be their comrade, activated his supernatural ability to kill, and then cleaned up the scene.
Steven then nonchalantly moved to the next house.
He silently killed the special forces members of West Mountain Base one by one.
But after Steven had killed a dozen people, the strong smell of blood caught the attention of the military dogs in a nearby kennel.
They began barking furiously, their howls echoing, which alerted the remaining special forces members.
