Chapter 272 They Were All Shocked
Charles was fuming when he got the news about the missing explosives.
Everything had been going so smoothly, with just one last step: blowing up the explosives.
But then, they told him the explosives were gone!
"Are you kidding me? How could the explosives just disappear? Did Steven swipe them?" Charles growled through clenched teeth.
Failure pissed him off, but it wasn't something to be scared of.
West Mountain Base had plenty of weapons and ammo; they had enough for another go.
The key was figuring out what went wrong.
The demolition team said, "No way! That was 1100 pounds of explosives; he couldn't have moved it that fast. Plus, even if he did, it was already rigged with a detonator. As long as you press the button, it should blow."
He continued, "But now, there's no trace of anything. I... I don't know what's going on. This is just weird, really weird!"
These demolition experts had been at it for years, taking down big structures in major projects. But this was the first time they'd run into something so unexplainable.
"Could you have gotten the location wrong? Search the whole area around the shelter again!" Charles ordered.
"We've already searched everywhere. Something that obvious couldn't just vanish," a demolition team member replied.
Charles was out of patience.
He put away the walkie-talkie, his brow furrowed deeply. "That was epic! Looks like Steven used his Supernatural Ability to make sure the explosives wouldn't go off."
"Based on a quick guess, his supernatural ability is spatial manipulation. That makes sense. He must've moved the explosives to another space, so even if I press the switch, the explosives can't get the signal and won't blow up." Charles quickly figured out Steven's ability.
But knowing it was one thing; solving the problem was a whole other beast.
They wanted to blow up the shelter, but they could only get the explosives there and then detonate them remotely.
And Steven could just take away the explosives they brought.
What about a long-range attack, like a missile?
Don't be ridiculous; they didn't have the clearance to launch missiles at Steven's shelter.
Besides, Charles wasn't sure if Steven's spatial ability could absorb missiles too.
"If his ability really is like that, then we're in deep trouble!" A shadow crossed Charles's mind.
He realized things were way more complicated than he thought.
From the moment they arrived until now, they hadn't faced much resistance from Steven. Even the explosives placed outside the shelter had been easily detonated by them.
It showed that Steven's biggest strength wasn't his offensive power but his defensive ability.
An unbreakable shelter and a spatial ability that could absorb almost any attack.
How were they supposed to fight that?
Charles was in a seriously tough spot.
Behind Charles, the burly Shane Wallace walked over and said, "Captain Reed, I have an idea. Since our explosives keep getting swiped, why don't we just use artillery?"
Charles looked at Shane's dark face and tilted his head, asking, "Can we even get large-caliber artillery here? Are you planning to carry it over?"
Shane said, "Rocket launchers could work too! Sure, they're slower, but if we keep hitting the same spot, we'll eventually break through!"
Shane went on, "We've got plenty of time to wear him down. Mr. Martin said that as long as we can take down Steven's shelter, no matter how much time and ammo we use, it's worth it!"
Charles took a deep breath, too pissed to respond to the straightforward guy.
Clay Hughes, standing nearby, snickered and walked over to Shane, saying, "Forget about a rocket launcher! It'd take forever to get through."
"And didn't Shawn say before? Conventional weapons don't work on him. I bet he transfers them to another space." Clay frowned, "What a powerful ability! This guy's supernatural ability is terrifying, with nearly invincible defense."
Shane argued, "Then let's have dozens of people attack from all angles! He can't defend from every direction at once, right?"
Clay rolled his eyes. "Do you really think his house is just ordinary reinforced concrete? If it were that easy to break with rocket launchers, would we have gone through all the trouble of mapping and modeling, then bringing a ton of explosives?"
Dispersed attacks to break through the shelter would eat up too much ammo, even for West Mountain Base.
Only Lily, holding her broadsword, stood at the back of the crowd, her eyes gleaming with a strange light.
'This Steven, I didn't expect him to be so powerful!' Thinking this, Lily's expectations for Steven grew.
But remembering her beloved Dragon Roar sword being taken by Steven made her furious.
Charles realized Steven was a tough opponent and dared not underestimate him anymore.
He called the demolition team over to discuss how to breach the shelter.
He said, "We still have 1100 pounds of explosives left. That means we only have one more shot at this! We need to think carefully about how to successfully blow this place up!"
The demolition team, knowing Steven had used his supernatural ability to take their explosives, was also frustrated.
"To detonate, we generally need to operate from a distance. But there's another option—manual detonation," a soldier suggested.
The atmosphere became awkward.
Detonating 1100 pounds of explosives manually? Forget about survival; it's likely there won't be any trace of the person left—it's like being instantly cremated right there.
Charles gave him a cold look. "I won't send my men to their deaths!"
Everyone fell silent. If sacrificing one person could breach Steven Rogers's house, it would undoubtedly be worth it.
But the question was, who would be willing to sacrifice themselves?
West Mountain was just an armed group, banding together to survive.
If it were for defending the country, they wouldn't fear death.
But to attack a private residence? They weren't willing to die for that.
Charles continued, "And even if Steven can take the explosives, what's to stop him from doing the same to a person?"
He continued, "It's a lose-lose situation. Send in a big team, and we'll lose a lot of people. Send in a small team, and they might not stand a chance. After all, he's a formidable enemy! So this plan is off the table. Let's think of other solutions!"
