Chapter 525 Do You Still Remember Frostheart?
No one knew exactly what Steven planned to do—he'd left in such a hurry without explaining his intentions. But they all trusted him.
Nearly half a year had passed since they'd started living together. Sharing the same roof, they understood what kind of person Steven was—methodical to a fault.
He would never put himself in danger without extremely high confidence in success.
So all they could do now was trust Steven and try to attract as many zombies as possible to their position, reducing the pressure on Otha's group.
By now, the assault boat had reached land, but the investigation team faced undiminished pressure.
Zombies swarmed across miles of terrain, closing in from all directions. Even more undead were crawling out of the lake, their bodies dripping wet.
Otha's Annihilation was certainly devastating, but he couldn't use it continuously, and it caused severe physical damage. He could only deploy it at critical moments to clear a path.
The others fared no better—despite their combat prowess, they lacked the stamina to face such an overwhelming zombie tide.
They formed a circle, standing back-to-back, advancing with difficulty. Everyone knew that once their Supernatural ability reserves were depleted, they would all die here—torn to pieces.
A heavy gloom hung over them, this feeling of despair even more intense than during the previous battle with Snowfall Cult.
'Looks like this time I'm really gonna die here,' Megan thought, approaching despair. This normally strong woman's face showed exhaustion.
Yet she felt little regret. Since the apocalypse began, almost everyone in Starlight City had perished. Her family, friends, and comrades had fallen one by one beside her. Having survived until now meant she'd already lived several months longer than most.
Neil flew overhead, continuously bombarding the horde with Telekinesis, each wave eliminating dozens of zombies.
But even this powerful Supernatural ability was a drop in the ocean against the massive horde, unable to alleviate their predicament. A group of Bronze Flying Elite Zombies had targeted him, constantly attacking, only to be repelled by his Telekinesis.
Gradually, Neil began to feel the strain.
He tried once more to persuade Otha to leave with him. Even if Silvercrest District planned to raze Starlight City, having the investigation team's captain would give them leverage in future negotiations.
"Mr. Soderberg, come with me! If we leave now, there's still hope!"
"Neil, you should go!" Otha smiled as he rejected Neil's proposal. Already a dying man, he wouldn't abandon his teammates.
He knew not one member of the investigation team would be willing to survive alone while abandoning their comrades. They would live together or die together.
Neil's face twisted with frustration. These stubborn fools!
"If that's your choice, don't blame me!" Neil turned and flew away.
His expression darkened as he thought: 'They're already doomed! And if The Grim Reaper's Sigh is deployed, these carefully cultivated zombies will be destroyed anyway.'
'Rather than let that happen, I should return and communicate with the Bloodfeeder Vine, letting these zombies terminate themselves. But these people must die. Otha, your refusal is your loss!"
Neil made his decision. Even if the investigation team's annihilation displeased Silvercrest District, as long as he could make the zombie horde "disappear," Starlight City wouldn't be flattened—at least not immediately.
That would give them the opportunity to rebuild gradually. With just a few more months, they could cultivate another massive zombie army!
If nothing else, Starlight City had no shortage of corpses.
After Neil departed, Steven arrived near Otha's group through his continuous spatial flashes.
His teleportation speed was so fast that even appearing within the horde posed no danger of being attacked.
Otha's position wasn't hard to find. Amid the vast zombie army, one area had the highest concentration of undead.
The zombies there were so eager they had piled up two stories high, climbing over each other's heads to reach their prey.
Steven materialized in front of Otha's group, startling them.
"Steven! How did you get here?"
Everyone was shocked and delighted by Steven's sudden appearance—shocked by his Supernatural ability and delighted because his arrival might offer hope for survival.
After all, Steven's power ranked among the strongest in Starlight City.
Seeing Steven, Otha immediately asked: "Steven, have you come to rescue us?"
Though everyone was fighting desperately against the zombies, all eyes focused on Steven, hoping for an affirmative answer.
Though they understood the chances were slim, people in desperation will run toward even the faintest glimmer of light!
Steven panted heavily, his expression grave. "The situation is worse than I imagined! My ability is teleportation, and I can only take one person away from here."
Hearing this, everyone's spirits instantly plummeted. Only one person could escape—but who? And solving the zombie problem was the real issue; anyone escaping alone would accomplish nothing.
Otha felt disappointed too, but remained rational. "Then what's your purpose in coming here? If you can't save us, what can you accomplish by putting yourself at risk?"
"I've come to offer you a possibility," Steven said firmly. "I have an idea. I'm not certain it will work, but it's worth trying!"
"Then tell us quickly!" Lanny urged.
Everyone waited for Steven's next words.
"Do you remember Natasha's Frostheart?" Steven asked gravely.
Of course they remembered it.
Otha began to grasp Steven's meaning.
"You should know Frostheart has two abilities," Steven explained. "First, it helps non-awakened individuals discover their powers. Second, it unlocks potential in those already awakened, enhancing their strength!"
He took a deep breath, looking at Otha with sincere eyes, unsure if Otha's high-tech glasses could perceive his earnestness.
"To be honest, I previously obtained Frostheart and used it to enhance my Supernatural ability. That's how I acquired such a high-level ability in Starlight City."
"Actually, I've used Frostheart too," Megan added. "If I'm not mistaken, Leonard and Sebastian have used it as well."
Steven was startled by this revelation—his first time hearing it. That meant if they died, Natasha would acquire their powerful Supernatural abilities!
But thinking about it, this made sense. In the post-apocalyptic world, power reigned supreme. The leaders of each faction would spare no effort to strengthen themselves.
Besides, Frostheart had no negative effects as long as the user remained alive.
