Chapter 279 A Strong Physique
Steven kept scanning for targets through his sniper rifle.
But these soldiers were top-notch. The moment they realized Steven was sniping at them, they took cover right away.
Charles had already warned them about Steven's deadly aim!
What they didn't expect was that Steven's sniper could hit from over 6,500 feet away and still pack a punch.
After a thorough scan, Steven didn't spot any more targets.
He felt a bit let down.
But it wasn't because he hadn't taken out more people.
Regular soldiers were no threat to him.
What he really wanted was to take down the team-leading Psychic.
Too bad, one bullet was dodged by the short Charles, and the other was tanked by that beastly giant ape!
He thought, 'Even with a heavy sniper, shooting from over 6,500 feet weakens the bullet too much. But still, I wouldn't want to get into close combat with them.'
In a one-on-one fight, Steven had no fear.
With Dimension Door, anyone trying to rush him would get dragged into the Extradimensional Space by Steven.
Just locking them in for a bit, even a Psychic would suffocate or mentally break down due to the super slow passage of time.
But since the enemy had numbers, Steven chose to play defense.
As Steven was mulling over how to take out the opposing Psychic, his vision suddenly blurred.
He looked at the distant ground.
A cloud of dust shot up high, like something was charging at him fast.
Steven couldn't see what it was, but he could feel it coming.
The speed was insane, hard to catch with the naked eye!
"What the heck?" Steven muttered, and in that instant, the thing slammed into the wall of his shelter without slowing down!
A loud bang followed.
Steven, lying by the window, felt a slight tremor.
But it took a powerful force to make this sturdy shelter tremble, even slightly.
Steven looked down and finally saw what it was.
Not a thing, but a person!
A guy in a white combat suit, with short hair and dark skin.
Six seconds ago, Steven's sniper rifle was aimed at his head.
"Quite a formidable person!" Steven looked down at him and said.
Charles looked up and locked eyes with Steven.
Steven saw anger and arrogance in Charles's eyes. Charles saw indifference and boredom in Steven's eyes, like everything so far was just a game he was winning.
Steven then aimed his gun right at Charles's head.
At this range, even if Charles's head was made of steel, it would be blown apart!
But before Steven could pull the trigger, Charles vanished like a ghost.
His speed was beyond anything Steven had ever imagined, more like an insect than an animal.
Steven's ears picked up a notification from the shelter's AI, Aurora.
"The shelter wall has been damaged, damage level 0.028%."
Steven couldn't help but take a long look at Charles outside the shelter.
He thought, 'This guy's a real oddball, isn't he? Not only does he zip around faster than a speeding bullet, but he's also got the strength of a superhero on steroids! He truly deserves to be the captain of the West Mountain Base action team.'
Charles looked at Steven from afar and pointed at him coldly. "I'll break your turtle shell sooner or later!" He meant the shelter.
Steven sneered. "I'll be waiting!"
He aimed his gun at Charles and fired another shot.
Charles moved so fast he was like a ghost, just a blur to the naked eye. Steven couldn't track him at all.
Steven's heart pounded with alarm.
Luckily, he was inside the shelter; otherwise, facing this guy outside would be extremely dangerous.
This didn't mean Steven couldn't beat Charles.
Charles's speed was both an advantage and a disadvantage.
As long as Steven guessed Charles's attack direction right and opened a Dimension Door on the path, Charles would be at Steven's mercy once he entered the extradimensional space.
But if Charles dodged the Dimension Door, then Steven might be the one to lose!
Steven believed that in a life-and-death duel, the odds were fifty-fifty.
But why would Steven leave the shelter?
As long as he stayed inside, he was invincible!
Steven didn't stop attacking, continuing to fire bullet after bullet at Charles.
He knew he couldn't kill Charles, but he wanted to see how long Charles's abilities could last.
After dodging several times, Charles seemed to get what Steven was up to.
He looked up and glared at Steven viciously, then disappeared from the front of the shelter in a flash.
Steven set up his sniper rifle, ready to find a few more enemies to take down. But the members of the Tiger Special Forces had gotten the memo and weren't about to expose themselves easily, so Steven didn't find a good shot.
"Did they run away? Or are they just biding their time for another attack?" Steven wondered, raising an eyebrow. He knew that after this failure, Charles wouldn't try the same trick again.
Both sides were playing a game of chess, and Steven was curious to see what other moves Charles had up his sleeve.
Steven wasn't worried about a long standoff. He could stay in this shelter forever if he had to.
But the West Mountain Base couldn't keep throwing troops at the shelter indefinitely.
A war of attrition was all about who would blink first!
Steven lay by the window, adjusted to a more comfortable position, and then calibrated the distance on his optical sight.
He aimed at the charred bodies of the soldiers at the foot of the low hill.
If the special forces tried to retrieve the bodies, they'd have to be ready to die.
With so many bodies, if Charles went to get them, could his energy last that long?
After heading back, Charles ordered the special forces to retreat. "We'll go back to Cox Town to rest and then re-discuss the battle plan!"
Today's mission failure had hit him hard.
But being the captain, he wasn't someone who acted on impulse.
With the battle going south, dragging it out was pointless; he needed to rethink the strategy.
Clay breathed a sigh of relief and said, "You scared me! When I saw you rush over just now, I thought you'd lost your mind."
Charles shook his head and said, "I was just checking how tough the shelter's walls are."
He raised his fist and said to everyone, "I found a new way to damage those walls."
Clay widened his eyes and said, "Captain Reed, you don't mean your fists, do you?"
Charles's fists were indeed terrifying, a fact everyone at West Mountain Base acknowledged.
But using fists to break through the thick walls of the shelter? How long would that take?
Charles lowered his voice and said, "We have to try every possible method! Guns and explosives aren't working against him anymore. Maybe the most primitive attack methods are the most effective."
Charles continued, "Think about it. When the demolition team went to place the explosives, why didn't he take the demolition team along with the explosives?" Everyone looked thoughtful after hearing this.
Elmer said, "Yeah, if his ability was that powerful and could take anything, he could've swallowed our entire demolition team."
Elmer analyzed seriously, "But he didn't do that; he took the explosives after we left. So, does his ability have limitations when it comes to living beings?"
Charles said, "There were two reasons for my previous action. One was to check the wall's defense, and the other was to test if his Supernatural Abilities include any other attack methods."
He sneered. "The fact is, his Spatial Ability doesn't have an active attack effect. It can only cause damage through the sniper rifle and reflective attacks!"
"So relying on manpower to destroy his shelter is totally doable!" he concluded.
Steven's ability was quickly figured out by the special forces.
After all, compared to Steven, they were experts in the field of Supernatural Ability research.
At West Mountain Base, there were even institutions dedicated to studying Psychics.
Shane said excitedly, "This is easy then! We have plenty of strength-enhanced Psychics. We can take turns smashing that wall!"
Shane looked at the silent Lily. "Ms. Evans, your swordsmanship is also top-notch! The three of us can attack together!"
Lily raised an eyebrow slightly and said softly, "You guys make the decisions; I have no objections."
She already had an idea in her mind. Yet in front of Charles and the others, she had to appear cooperative.
Elmer quickly said, "Are you guys serious? Even if you all have great strength, it would take forever to break through that wall with fists and swords!"
Charles squinted his eyes, looking at the indomitable black shelter, and murmured, "If that's the only feasible way, then we'll do it. Whether it's for the future of West Mountain Base or to avenge our fallen brothers!"
Charles knew how enormous the resources Steven held were.
If they could get their hands on them, it would greatly ease the resource crisis at West Mountain Base.
So he wouldn't miss even the slightest possibility!
"Let's go back!" Charles touched his stomach; he was very hungry now.
"What about the bodies of our comrades?" Shane felt a bit uneasy; those soldiers who had just died were all his comrades!
Charles cautiously said, "If we go now, we'll just get killed. Don't be hasty! We'll retrieve their bodies after we take down the shelter!"
