Chapter 377 A Selfless Good Person
Megan looked at their humble appearance with increasing disdain.
It was clear as day—these spineless nobodies were never gonna get anywhere near Steven's inner circle.
But she wasn't exactly swimming in intel herself. Might as well squeeze whatever she could out of them.
"First, tell me, where did you get this satellite phone?" Megan took out Christian's satellite phone and showed it to them.
But how could these students know where it came from?
If Lester hadn't dug it out from under their bed, they wouldn't have had a chance to see it either.
"We don't know about this thing!"
"We've never seen it before."
A look of displeasure flashed in Megan's eyes.
Warren's gut told him things were about to go south, and fast. So he took a leap of faith.
"Steven left it behind!"
Whatever the problem was, he figured, just pin it on Steven and Lily. They were the ones who dragged them into Cox Town, so they could take the heat.
"Steven?" Megan's eyes narrowed, a dangerous glint flickering in them.
Killing Christian? That was a straight-up declaration of war against her and Emberwick Base.
As the head honcho, she couldn't let that slide. Steven had to pay, or her grip on Emberwick Base would start slipping.
"Tell me, how many people are in Steven's team? What are their abilities? And how many weapons and supplies do they have?" Megan locked eyes with Warren.
This whole line of questioning left Warren and his crew totally stumped.
They'd been holed up in Cox Town for ages, but they'd never crossed the river. Their lives and the folks in the shelter might as well have been on different planets.
They had zero clue about Steven's strength, his supernatural abilities, or what his crew could do.
Yeah, they'd interacted with Lily, but back then, all they cared about was buttering her up for more food—or better yet, a ticket into the shelter.
They'd never bothered to dig into Steven or his people.
And honestly? Even if they had asked, Lily probably wouldn't have spilled much.
So, they stumbled over their words, spilling everything they knew.
"I... I heard Steven's got some space-warping ability or something..."
"His crew's no joke. One of 'em, Cindy—she's a total tech whiz, like next-level hacker material!"
"And there's this other one, Aubrey—she's a freakin' genius with machines!"
"He's got this woman, Nora, rolling with him—you know, the Nora. The actress!"
"And our teacher Lily is with him now. She's a total badass—used to be some big-shot politician's personal bodyguard. She's no joke, trust me!"
The information they provided was fragmented.
Megan had Byron record all the information.
However, although they said a lot, very little was useful.
Like, yeah, they mentioned Steven had some kind of spatial ability, but they couldn't give any specifics.
As for Lily, her power was pretty basic: a Strengthening System ability that amped up her already solid physique and combat skills. That was at least something—it gave Megan an idea of how to handle Lily in a fight.
But when it came to the shelter's defenses or the abilities of the others? These students were clueless. Total dead ends.
"With just this information, it's hard to judge how strong Steven's team is." Byron shook his head at Megan.
Megan's slender fingers tapped on the edge of the chair.
She understood this point, of course.
Limited intelligence was not enough to justify starting a war.
But this war was inevitable.
"Anything else? Think hard. If this is all you've got, it's not gonna buy you a free pass," Megan said coolly, her voice ice-cold.
The students were stunned. Were they going to die here?
"No, wait! We're worth more alive, I swear! Don't kill us!"
"Lily's got a soft spot for us! If you keep us around, you can use us as leverage—she'll cave to whatever you throw at her!"
"Yeah, Lily's totally got our backs. She'd never let us go down like this!"
"If you're planning to take on Steven, we can show you the ropes. We know the lay of the land!"
Hearing the students' words, Megan smirked, unimpressed. She stood up lazily and flicked her hand. "Lock 'em up! Let them stew and figure out if they're actually worth keeping around. If they can't cough up something useful by then, we'll use 'em as cannon fodder when the fight starts!"
Her refinery needed workers who could do the job.
These students, who looked weak and on the verge of death, were not worth keeping and would only waste food.
Byron walked over and said to her, "Maybe we can give it a try!"
"Try what?" Megan asked indifferently.
Byron said, "These kids are Lily's students, and Lily's with Steven now. Maybe they're tight with her. We don't know what Steven's packing yet, so why not use these brats as leverage? Pretend to negotiate, feel him out, and see what he's got."
Megan raised an eyebrow, giving him a skeptical look. "You seriously think Steven or Lily's gonna care about these deadweights?"
Her voice dripped with sarcasm. "Wake up, Byron. It's the apocalypse. Everyone's out for themselves, and only the useful are worth saving. These kids are worthless. No one's gonna trade for 'em—not even their precious teacher Lily. She's not that dumb!"
Byron chuckled, shaking his head. "Boss, you gotta realize not every woman's as hardcore as you. Maybe Lily's the sentimental type? I mean, the fact that these kids are hanging around Steven's turf kinda says she's got a soft spot for them."
After listening to Byron, Megan also felt it made some sense.
She couldn't judge others by her own standards; after all, people like her were rare.
"You mean their teacher Lily might be a selfless good person?"
Byron smiled, "I just hope she is! If so, then we have an opportunity."
