Chapter 145 Entrusting the Orphan

Henry was really able to let things go.

Having experienced the apocalypse, people tended to have a more transparent mindset. After all, they were accustomed to life and death.

Moreover, Henry and Cara were just temporary spouses, and there wasn't much emotional foundation between them.

He wouldn't be devastated by her death.

Seeing Henry's reaction, Steven showed a comforting smile.

He said, "That's easy. I'll definitely find you someone you'll be satisfied with!"

As they were talking, Elinor came over with holding the crying Mia.

She looked helpless, "Steven, Henry, she's crying again. What should I do?"

Steven and Henry exchanged a glance, and both of them were stunned.

Taking care of a child? Neither of them had any experience with that.

"She might be hungry!"

Steven's gaze shifted to Elinor, lingering on her nurturing figure. She was full and ample, suggesting that if she were to have a child in the future, that child would certainly never go hungry.

Elinor's face turned red immediately, and she said excitedly, "What are you thinking? I haven't had a child yet, so how can I have milk for her to drink?"

Steven said, "We really can't take care of this child. We need to find someone experienced to take care of her."

He looked at Henry, "Henry, should we give this child away?"

When Cara was still around, Henry took care of the child because of Cara.

But now that Cara was gone, Henry wouldn't take care of the child for her. Henry wasn't a fool; he wouldn't do such a stupid thing.

But looking at the baby in the swaddle, he couldn't bear it.

His expression was a bit conflicted, "But if we give Mia away, can she survive?"

Steven nodded and said affirmatively, "Don't worry. After this battle, it's unlikely that there will be large-scale conflicts in the community."

He added, "I'll find a reliable family to send her to, and then I'll provide some essential baby supplies. There won't be any problem!"

Steven's words made Henry feel much more at ease.

He nodded. "That's the only way."

Seeing Henry nod in agreement, Steven walked over and took the child from Elinor's arms.

Mia seemed to understand the fate she was about to face, and her crying grew louder.

"I'll go find a good family for you right away!" Steven looked at her pink little face and said coldly.

'Sorry, although you are innocent, I really can't carry a burden.'

'There are too many innocent people who die tragically in this world, so if you want to blame someone, blame this world!' Steven thought.

He knew that after he sent this child away, her chance of survival was less than 1%.

Henry also understood it.

But sometimes, it was important to learn to play dumb.

As long as you could play dumb, you would face fewer troubles.

Avoidance might be shameful, but it was useful.

Steven was the one who stuck to this principle.

He couldn't bring himself to harm this child, but he didn't want to take care of her either, so he could only pass her to someone else.

As for whether this child could survive, that could only be left to God's blessing!

Steven found a backpack in the room and stuffed two packs of diapers, two bags of formula, and a 25-pound bag of bread into it.

Then he carried the backpack, held the crying child in one hand, and carried a gun in the other, leaving the house.

Building 25 was exceptionally quiet now.

The neighbors were all dead, and the world seemed to have become quieter.

Steven walked down the stairs step by step, then headed towards Building 18.

The entire community was extremely silent because he had killed most of the people in one battle, especially all the militant personnel.

The remaining residents were not very dangerous—at least not to Steven.

Some people peeked at Steven through the windows, their eyes filled with fear.

"Is Steven coming to kill us?" People were terrified.

Steven's target was Building 18, which lived by the motto of a harmonious environment.

This scared the residents of Building 18.

There were still more than sixty people alive in this building, and those who died were either frozen to death or died from complications.

As an idealist, Chase had remarkably maintained his ideals until now.

This was also the reason Steven hadn't attacked Building 18.

Steven arrived at the entrance of Building 18, raised his gun, and fired two shots into the air.

"Chase, come out!" he shouted.

After a while, Chase's short and thin figure appeared in front of Steven.

His dark circles were very heavy, and his face looked extremely pale, as if he could die suddenly at any moment.

This showed how much he had been tormented over the past day and night.

They were all afraid that Steven would come and burn them to death in the building like he did with the other buildings.

"Steven, I'm here." Chase mustered the courage to stand in front of Steven.

Steven looked at him, but this middle-aged man's body wasn't trembling.

No wonder, after experiencing so much, Chase was probably numb to death.

"Aren't you afraid of me?" Steven asked with a smile.

Chase swallowed, "Afraid. But being afraid is useless. And I think, you didn't come here to kill us today."

He pointed to the swaddle in Steven's arms, still tightly wrapped but with the sound of a crying baby.

"You came alone and are holding a child. With your personality, you wouldn't kill people in this manner."

Steven nodded. "That's right. I've always said you're a smart person. I'm here to give you the child. Since you have the most people alive in this building, do you have any mothers who are still breastfeeding?"

A flash of excitement appeared in Chase's eyes.

Because he saw a chance to live from Steven's words.

"Yes! Are you looking for a wet nurse for the child?" Chase quickly nodded and gave a definite answer.

Steven nodded, "That's perfect! This child will be in your care from now on. As a condition, I won't kill you."

As Steven spoke, he handed the child over.

Chase hurriedly took the child in his arms, looking down at the baby, and his gratitude was beyond words.

Because the baby had saved the lives of everyone in the building!

Steven also threw the backpack on the ground.

Then he said, "Inside are diapers and formula for her, and a bag of bread."

"Of course, I know you might not give her the formula. How you take care of her is up to you. I don't care, and you just keep her alive."

"If you really can't keep her alive, I won't blame you, but don't deliberately kill her. Baby's meat is tender, so you need to control the mouths of the people in your building."

"After all, she's a child I brought over. You should at least give me that respect, right?"

Chase looked at the heavy backpack on the ground. Listening to Steven's threatening words, he quickly nodded.

"Don't worry. We'll definitely take good care of this child! We won't let anything happen to her." He assured Steven.
