Chapter 261 The Secret is Discovered
Steven was gearing up for a long fight, planning every move.
Meanwhile, Shawn and Yosef were making a messy retreat with the few soldiers they had left, heading to a far-off spot.
They started with thirty guys, and now almost half were gone. Only eighteen were left standing!
But the worst part? They didn't even put a dent in the enemy.
Even when they threw everything they had at it, they couldn't even scratch the shelter's wall!
The group looked beat, and Shawn, their leader, was just as frustrated, clueless about how to break the news to the base.
Yosef walked over, gave him a pat on the shoulder, and said, "We need to report this to the base right now! This enemy is out of our league!"
Shawn felt a lump in his throat, not knowing what to say. The pain and guilt were too much.
Yosef sighed and said, "If you can't do it, I will! This mission is too urgent."
Shawn nodded.
Yosef grabbed the comms device and reported back to West Mountain Base.
Since the base was underground, they couldn't contact each other directly; only the base's network info department could get messages.
As soon as the rescue team's message came in, Harold, the head of the info department, rushed to tell the leader, Peter.
The intel first landed on Lisa's desk.
She took a quick look and her face turned serious.
"Twelve soldiers are dead!" she exclaimed.
West Mountain Base had just over five hundred soldiers, mostly elite troops and special cops from before the apocalypse.
Losing any soldier was a huge blow!
Losing twelve at once? That was news that would make Peter lose it.
And the craziest part? Yosef's report mentioned they ran into a seriously tough enemy.
Not only was there a fortress that shrugged off gunfire, but they also faced a powerful Psychic.
This was a major threat to West Mountain Base's control over the area!
Lisa didn't waste any time and reported it to Peter.
Peter read the report, his face giving nothing away.
But he read it three times before setting it down.
Lisa was taken aback. She'd been Peter's secretary for five years and knew his moods and habits well.
Right now, Peter's heart was definitely not as calm as he looked.
Lisa stepped up and said, "Mr. Martin, Shawn and Yosef failed their mission and let you down. They should be punished to set an example!"
Shawn and Yosef's mission was a total bust.
They were supposed to rescue Zane and Brittany.
Even if they couldn't pull it off, they should've at least brought back some useful intel.
But all they found was the enemy's hideout.
And they lost a bunch of soldiers too.
If West Mountain Base wasn't so short on manpower, Peter would've probably had them executed!
Peter looked up and gave Lisa a cold stare.
Just that one look made Lisa feel like she was in a freezer.
Peter looked away and said calmly, "We're dealing with a clever enemy. We can't blame them entirely. We need all the fighters we can get, so we'll deal with this later."
"However, I'm really curious about that mysterious shelter and its owner. Got any intel on this?" Peter asked.
Intelligence was everything. Knowing your enemy and your own strengths was the difference between victory and defeat.
Peter always stayed at West Mountain Base and never ventured out. Without solid intel, he couldn't make any decisions.
Lisa wasn't just a pretty face; she had real skills.
She was ready for this.
As soon as Peter asked, she pulled out a tablet and handed it over.
On it was a map of Starlight City, zoomed in on the area around West Mountain Base.
"According to Shawn and Yosef's report, they found the shelter at Emerald Estate by the Mississippi River. Combining this with earlier intel, I think the most likely suspect is a guy named Steven!"
She continued, "As for the shelter, I found out it was built ten years ago by Brock. No one paid much attention to it back then, but our engineers estimate its defenses are probably as strong as our base."
Peter frowned, "Steven? Who's that?"
Peter had a lot on his plate every day, so he couldn't remember every name.
Lisa reminded him, "He's the guy suspected of having the stolen goods from the Walmart warehouse."
Seeing Peter still puzzled, Lisa added, "The small-time warehouse manager."
Peter finally remembered. "Him? If that's the case, it makes sense."
Peter frowned slightly, surprised. "An insignificant guy with no education and no background. He actually became a big problem by mutating and gaining Supernatural abilities!"
"He's got some luck." Peter now had a clearer picture of Steven but still didn't take him seriously. After all, Peter had always been a big shot in Starlight City's upper echelons.
In his view, Steven was just an overly lucky small fry.
Peter thought that even if a small person gained power, they'd be limited by their lack of vision. They wouldn't master the power and would be consumed by it.
They couldn't compare to someone like him, who had elite education and came from a prestigious family.
Peter stood up and picked up the report again to study it carefully.
He felt several clues coming together, something was clicking in his mind, ready to emerge.
"Walmart warehouse manager, innate Psychic, ability to ignore bullets, Supernatural Ability... and Psychic..." he mumbled.
Peter pondered for more than ten minutes, and suddenly, he finally realized where the problem lay. "If he were just an ordinary awakened person, encountering Brittany and Zane, he should have tried to curry favor or avoid them. He might even have begged to join our West Mountain Base. After all, out there, lacking resources, it's almost impossible for one person to survive."
"But he didn't do that. Instead, he risked offending West Mountain Base to kill Brittany and Zane."
"This can only mean he has a secret that absolutely can't be discovered, a secret Brittany and Zane might have found out." A gleam flashed in Peter's eyes.
He slammed the table hard. "In the apocalypse, what's the biggest secret? Resources! In other words, the huge amount of resources stolen from Walmart is actually in his hands! He used his special Supernatural Ability to hide them!"
