Chapter 257 Attack on the Shelter
Shawn and Yosef, along with the rest of the crew, combed through the scene, feeling a gnawing sense of dread.
There wasn't a single bloodstain; the place was way too clean.
That left them with two options.
Either Brittany and Zane were taken alive, or they were killed and the perp had all the time in the world to clean up.
Neither option was good news.
Just then, a soldier found some snowmobile tracks and rushed over to tell them.
"Hey, I found snowmobile tracks!" he shouted.
Shawn and Yosef exchanged a look. "Let's go check it out!"
They followed the soldier and, sure enough, found snowmobile tracks that the snow hadn't completely covered yet.
They felt a bit of relief.
"If we follow these, we can find where the enemy's holed up!"
"No time to waste, let's move before the snow covers them up!"
They quickly gathered everyone and followed the tracks on sleds.
In the vast snowy landscape, human traces were rare, so the tracks stood out like a beacon.
Before long, they reached the outskirts of the Emerald Estate.
"Hold up!" Shawn ordered, stopping everyone outside the estate and tying up the sled dogs.
"Whoever it is must be in this estate. Everyone, form teams of three and follow the footprints."
They instinctively took up their battle positions, weapons ready, moving forward cautiously.
The path led them to the west gate of the estate, not the south side.
So the traps on the path were still untouched.
When Steven came back, he left a trail of footprints leading straight to Villa 101.
The soldiers from West Mountain Base followed the footprints carefully.
Suddenly, one of them stepped on something. He quickly lifted his foot and couldn't help but laugh when he saw what it was.
The others looked over.
He had pulled a spiked board from the thick sole of his boot.
"Seriously? People still use these old-school traps?" the soldier said with a grin, holding up the spiked board.
His buddies laughed too.
"Looks like the enemy we're dealing with isn't exactly a pro," the soldier added.
Shawn's expression relaxed a bit when he saw the crude trap.
Still, Shawn warned, "Stay sharp. They did take down two of our guys!"
He knew Brittany wasn't a combat-type Psychic. If there were a bunch of people hiding in the estate, they could've overwhelmed Brittany and Zane with sheer numbers and firepower.
But this time, they had thirty fully armed soldiers and two souped-up Psychic leaders!
No way they could fail!
The soldiers kept moving forward, and someone else stepped on a nail. The nails had been buried for a while, and the hardened snow dulled their impact.
Their special forces boots were tough enough to handle it, so no one got hurt.
Everyone was joking around, letting their guard down.
Just then, a soldier felt something tug at his leg. He looked down and saw a wire buried in the snow.
It triggered a grenade, which exploded right under his feet!
The soldier was blown away.
The rescue team was in shock!
Shawn and Yosef rushed over to see the soldier's face turning red, blood already spilling from his mouth.
"Dalton!!" Shawn cried out in anguish.
Even though Dalton Cox was fully armed, the grenade's blast caused severe internal injuries.
Someone tried to save Dalton immediately.
External injuries are easy to treat, but internal injuries are the toughest!
They didn't have a field medic, and even if they took him back, it would be too late.
Someone pulled out adrenaline to try to keep Dalton alive, but it was no use. Soon, Dalton was coughing up blood and died on the spot.
Everyone's eyes turned red.
After the apocalypse, the bond between these old comrades had grown even closer; they were brothers willing to die for each other!
Seeing a comrade die in front of them, how could they not be filled with rage?
"Damn bastards!" someone cursed through gritted teeth, glaring at Villa 101 ahead with a rifle in hand.
The footprints ended here, leaving no doubt that the culprit was in this house!
Someone immediately raised their gun and started shooting at the shelter!
But the bullets just bounced off the walls and windows, like they were shooting toy guns!
Not even a scratch appeared on the glass.
However, the noise outside had already alerted the people inside the house.
Steven had just come up from the basement when he heard the grenade explosion and rifle fire. He immediately knew the West Mountain crew had arrived!
In the living room, Elinor and Nora were nervously peeking out the window.
From a distance, they saw a bunch of people in white combat uniforms, shooting at them.
Steven shouted to the shelter's AI, "Activate the optical protection system!"
"Roger! Activated," the AI replied.
As soon as the AI finished, all the glass in the shelter turned one-way visible. They could see out, but from the outside, it was pitch black.
Steven had never used this feature before because it messed with the lighting a bit.
But now, facing a real armed force, he couldn't afford to be careless.
Steven walked to the window, looking at the dozens of people outside, and muttered, "Finally, some real opponents. This is good. If I didn't have to face professional soldiers, wouldn't this high-end shelter be a waste?"
He glanced back at the somewhat nervous Elinor and Nora and smiled. "If you're scared, you can go to the basement."
Elinor's furrowed brows immediately relaxed.
She walked up to Steven and smiled. "We've been through so much together; what's there to be afraid of now?"
With Steven around, she feared nothing.
Because she knew Steven never fought unprepared.
Nora also mustered her courage, walked to Steven's side, and looked at the intense gunfire outside.
"We're in this together; we face any danger together!" she said resolutely.
Steven, however, smiled faintly, "Danger? Aren't you exaggerating a bit?"
He squinted at the scene outside, confidently crossing his arms. "If it's just these people, they're not even close!"
He had already noticed that none of these people were carrying heavy firepower. They had only some rifles and grenades.
There was no need for Steven to get involved personally.
The shelter's defenses were so strong, they could bombard it for a year and still not get through!
"Bring me a chair." Ignoring the bullets whizzing outside, Steven calmly instructed Nora. He then sat by the window, crossed his legs, and leisurely watched their attack.
This calm demeanor made Nora and Elinor admire him even more.
Even knowing the windows were specially made and could withstand large explosions, facing the intense gunfire still made their hearts race.
Outside, the rescue team also realized something was off.
"What... what kind of house is this? It feels like a fortress!"
"We've been shooting for ages, and we haven't even scratched the doors or windows, let alone shattered any glass!"
The soldiers were on high alert, realizing they were up against some serious opponents this time.
Shawn and Yosef exchanged a look.
Shawn said, "These guys are no joke! I can totally believe they could capture or even kill Brittany and Zane."
Yosef sneered, his eyes coldly fixed on the one-way glass.
"Isn't that perfect? What are we here for? To rescue people!" one soldier said. "The mission given to us by the organization must be completed! And they killed our comrade; we must make them pay!"
If Steven heard this, he would definitely shout his innocence, "It's not my fault; your guys set off the landmines on their own!"
Shawn ordered everyone to stop the pointless shooting. "Watch out for other traps around! Clear the traps first!"
He didn't want any more of his men to suffer the same fate.
The soldiers, upon hearing this, immediately put on tactical goggles and began clearing the mines.
If they hadn't been careless initially, they wouldn't have been killed by the grenade.
They were from modern armies and had very comprehensive means for bomb disposal.
Soon, they found the hidden grenades in the snow.
Besides, they also found the deeply buried triggered anti-tank mine Steven had planted!
But unfortunately, finding it didn't mean they could neutralize its danger.
When Steven noticed that, he pressed the remote control in his hand.
The power of this mine was entirely different from a grenade.
The two soldiers closest to it were directly blown away, and even with the most advanced military combat suits, their limbs were torn apart!
Not only them, but three others nearby were also blown away by the shockwave.
When others rushed to help, they found that the injured had severe internal injuries, likely with shattered internal organs!
Shawn's eyes were almost bleeding.
"Who is he, and why does he have things that only our military possesses!" he fumed.
These soldiers were the cream of the crop among the elite. If they had sufficient intelligence, none of them would have died so easily!
Unfortunately, the ice age had crippled their high-tech arsenal, forcing them to rely on century-old combat methods, despite their advanced skills.
The sheer frustration was driving Shawn up the wall!
