Chapter 487 The Zombies are Coming!
Otha said, "You don't need to wipe out the entire horde, just delay them long enough to give our investigation team a chance."
"Once we go underground and take out the Zombie King, the horde will be much easier to handle without their leader."
Sebastian sighed, "A hundred thousand zombies, maybe even more. Even without a leader, it's still a huge problem!"
Otha said, "The fact that there are so many of them is actually a good thing. It means this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to wipe them out in one go!"
Megan, with her arms crossed, said seriously, "I'm just afraid we won't be able to hold them off for long, and we'll end up getting overwhelmed and losing our lives here."
No one was foolish; they knew the hundred thousand zombies Otha mentioned was an understatement.
In reality, it could only be more.
In the past, they had an underground base as a fallback. But now, at Snowfall Cult, they had nothing behind them, only a group of ordinary cult members they needed to protect.
Of course, they weren't particularly interested in protecting the cult members.
But if they let the zombies breach their defenses, the formation of the five factions would be in serious trouble, and everyone might die here!
So, whether they liked it or not, they had to give their all to stop the zombie horde.
Otha adjusted his sunglasses.
"If you think the defense is too heavy, you can swap with others. Or," he glanced at Megan, "swap tasks with us."
Megan's expression became uneasy.
Defending against the zombie horde was tough, but compared to the investigation team's task, it was much easier.
Seven people, going underground, facing an unknown number of Bronze Elite Zombies and a massive horde—Apart from the investigation team, no other faction in Starlight City had the strength or courage to do this.
Each of these seven people was an elite with exceptional combat skills, the weakest being at least a deputy level in their respective factions.
According to Steven and others' estimates, at least three of them were as strong as Megan and other faction leaders.
As for Otha's personal combat strength, it was undoubtedly above all the Psychics in Starlight City, at least on the surface.
And beside him was a seemingly harmless but actually cunning and powerful deputy, Theron.
Megan could only say, "I understand! At this point, we have no choice but to fight. Mr. Soderberg, all our hopes rest on you!"
"Alright," Otha said calmly.
In the following time, everyone strengthened their defenses, realizing that the biggest battle was imminent.
The fate of Starlight City would be decided in this battle.
If they failed, Starlight City would become a dead city.
By then, Silvercrest District might choose to use [The Grim Reaper's Sigh] to wipe the city off the map.
This atmosphere also affected Steven, who had been relatively relaxed at first.
He inexplicably began to feel nervous. If they really failed, what should he do?
Probably the only option would be to use the Double Dimension Door to escape with those around him, then go back to get Cindy and others and leave Starlight City together.
With this worry, Steven found Otha.
"Mr. Soderberg, there's something I don't understand. Can I ask you?"
"Go ahead." Otha had always been kind to Steven because he saw potential in him and wanted to recruit him.
Steven asked, "Since we already know the situation in Starlight City, and we just need to take out the Zombie Kings to end the crisis, why don't you request reinforcements from Silvercrest District?"
"It's just that with Silvercrest District's strength, sending a team of elite warriors to eliminate these zombies shouldn't be too difficult."
"Why put us under such immense pressure?"
All cities in the South region were under Silvercrest District's jurisdiction.
So, they naturally wouldn't want a city under its control to suffer massive casualties.
People were a precious resource in the post-apocalyptic world.
Steven believed Silvercrest District wouldn't want to to lose too many.
Otherwise, they wouldn't have sent people to handle this crisis.
After listening to Steven, Otha suddenly laughed.
He turned to Steven and asked, "Do you think the problem in Starlight City is very serious?"
Steven didn't know how to answer.
Of course, it was serious. Such a large-scale zombie outbreak could turn Starlight City into a dead city and spread to surrounding cities.
"Isn't it serious?" Steven could only smile and ask back.
Otha said, "That's just what you think!"
He became serious. "Listen, Steven. Starlight City may be big, but compared to the entire Silvercrest District, it's just an ordinary city, nothing special."
"In the entire district, new problems arise every day—Psychics, mutated creatures, unknown bizarre events. In this era of mutation, there are too many situations beyond human control."
"The district has many issues to deal with, and the number of investigation teams like ours is limited!"
"So, unless the situation is absolutely uncontrollable, the district won't send a large force to suppress it!"
He patted Steven on the shoulder. "The world is big, much bigger than just Starlight City. If you ever go out and see the world, you'll realize this place is actually very stable."
"In the central regions of our country, in the rivers, lakes, and famous mountains, that's where the real chaos is!"
Steven's eyes were filled with curiosity, but he was also resistant to leaving Starlight City.
He shook his head. "I'd rather not! I'm a homebody; staying in Starlight City is just fine."
Otha didn't say much more, just smiled faintly. "If you ever change your mind, you can contact..."
He was about to say "contact me," but suddenly paused.
Given his physical condition, how long he could live was uncertain.
"Let's talk about it after we deal with the zombie horde."
Days passed.
No zombies appeared around Snowfall Cult, and the land was eerily silent, almost giving the impression that the zombies had disappeared from Starlight City.
Only Steven and others knew they hadn't disappeared but were gathering strength, preparing to launch a fatal attack on the human forces in Starlight City!
Finally, on the fifth night, the zombies came!
Otha's sentries were the first to spot them.
They were the only ones with the Nebula system's satellite positioning capability, able to monitor everything happening in Starlight City in real-time.
So, when zombies started pouring out of three subway entrances around Snowfall Cult on the fifth night, he immediately warned everyone.
"The horde is here! Battle stations!"
