Chapter 442 Feasibility Study

Emberwick Base.

Megan sat at her desk, her hands clasped under her chin, looking unusually grim.

Byron, sitting nearby, was also silent, his face just as serious.

Moments ago, the search team they sent to check out the horde of corpses had been completely wiped out.

In front of Megan was a communication device, playing a video sent by Lester in his final moments.

Through the device, Megan saw the terrifying number of corpses deep in the subway. And those dog-sized rats. But what scared her the most was the enormous and bizarre Bronze Elite Zombie. Their combat power was on par with Psychics!

"I never expected there to be such monsters underground," Megan muttered.

"If they all come out, even our fully armed base won't be able to stop them," Byron said.

"Should we consider moving underground?" he suggested. This meant abandoning everything on the surface, including the massive refinery.

Megan frowned. "That's absolutely impossible. If we lose the refinery, we lose our foundation for survival. No matter the cost, we must protect the refinery."

"But if they really all come at us, can we hold them off?" Byron asked.

A ruthless glint flashed in Megan's eyes. "Then we'll pour out our stockpiled oil, douse it around the refinery. As soon as those zombies come, we'll ignite the oil and burn them all!"

The cost of this plan was huge, but it was a desperate measure for survival. As long as they could protect the refinery, the remaining crude oil would sustain them for a long time.

Byron fell silent. They had no better defense strategy at the moment. After all, they couldn't bring themselves to completely abandon everything on the surface and hide in the underground shelter.

"In that case, we should at least move the soldiers' families underground, so even if something happens to us, there will be someone to respond from below," Byron suggested.

Megan leaned back in her chair and let out a long sigh. "Let's do as you say."

Steven and the others returned to the shelter. When Elinor and the others came to greet them, they noticed that there wasn't much excitement on their faces. The women at home immediately realized that Steven and his team hadn't had a particularly successful mission.

"What happened? Did you run into trouble?" Elinor asked gently.

Earl and Henry exchanged a glance, both showing bitter smiles. Only Steven still smiled warmly.

"We did run into a bit of trouble, but it's nothing too serious," he said.

Fighting was the responsibility of the combat personnel. Steven didn't want to burden the women at home with pressure. Elinor and Nora were both support staff, and they had already done everything they should. The fighting was left to Steven and his team. At the very least, when he returned home, Steven didn't want to bring too much negativity. Home was their important refuge now.

After everyone got inside, they changed into their everyday clothes. Nora brought out some hot drinks, and after sipping on them, they felt a bit warmer.

Steven turned to Nora and said, "Can you get Cindy and Aubrey? I need to ask them something."

"Sure, just a sec," Nora replied, running to the back to call the two from the control room and workshop.

Cindy wheeled herself over, immediately sensing something was off. Steven's expression was gentle, but there was deep concern in his eyes. Henry and Earl's faces clearly showed that today's mission hadn't gone well. Lily's face remained cold and unreadable.

Cindy smiled as she approached Steven. "Steven, how did the mission go?"

Even though she knew something might have gone wrong, Cindy needed to understand the situation to offer her help.

Steven looked up, smiled, and waved Cindy and Aubrey over. "Come here, I have a very important question for you."

Cindy and Aubrey exchanged a surprised look. It was rare for Steven to seek their advice. They approached him, and Cindy said, "Ask away, whatever it is."

Steven said, "Here's the thing," He spread his hands, his expression serious. "I need a way to freeze seawater quickly, and a lot of it. Do you have any good ideas?"

Steven's plan wasn't just to flood the subway with seawater. Simply flooding it might not kill a large number of zombies and giant rats—they might escape.

At that point, the escaping giant rats and zombies could become an even bigger problem. So the best plan was to first collect the seawater in the extradimensional space, then find a way to freeze it quickly. Once the seawater was poured into the subway, it would freeze, turning the entire subway tunnel into a giant block of ice, freezing the zombies and rats inside.

At a depth of 33 feet underground, frozen like that, only the Bronze Elite Zombies and the zombie king might escape; ordinary zombies wouldn't stand a chance.

That was Steven's basic plan. But whether it could be realized depended on the technical aspects.

Chemistry was Aubrey's specialty. Aubrey thought for a moment and asked, "There are ways to do it. With the right chemicals, we can freeze seawater quickly. But how much seawater are you talking about?"

Steven couldn't help but laugh. "An enormous amount! Let's put it this way, I need to freeze an entire subway line!"

Hearing this, the women at home were all shocked. If that was the case, the amount of seawater needed would be terrifying!

But Henry, Earl, and Lily showed no surprise. They looked expectantly at Aubrey and Cindy, hoping for a positive answer.

Aubrey thought for a while and replied, "Actually, it's not that hard to do, especially if we have enough time to prepare."
