Chapter 465 The Investigation Team Sets Out
The investigation team left Steven Rogers's house and rushed off to dig up more info on the zombie horde.
They were cruising in a black RV with a super roomy interior. Seven people lived in it, and it had everything they needed to get by.
This ride was custom-built for them by engineers from the Silvercrest District to help with their long-term missions outside.
Not only was it spacious, but it was also as tough as a tank, made with aerospace materials.
Before heading out, they had already gathered tons of intel about Starlight City.
The Silvercrest District's intelligence network was way beyond what Steven and his team could imagine.
Take the satellite navigation system, for example.
Steven and his crew had pretty much lost that function. But the Silvercrest District had military satellites that could keep an eye on everything happening on the ground from way up in space.
In other words, everything Steven and his team did was crystal clear to the Nebula system.
Otha and his team had a bunch of intel and now needed to check things out on-site in various areas.
First stop: the Floral Springs subway line, which Steven had frozen.
When they got to the subway entrance, they could see a long mound on the ground stretching out like a snake.
Eris said, "Looks like a ton of seawater was poured in, then frozen and expanded, causing the ground to crack."
Otha walked over to the subway line and saw the solid ice through the cracks.
He squatted down, placing his right hand above the ice, like he wanted to feel the ice that had frozen the whole subway line!
Otha closed his eyes and pictured Steven pouring a massive amount of seawater from the extradimensional space.
Thinking about it, he took a deep breath. "Steven is really something! He's a genius."
Lanny, standing nearby with his arms crossed, heard Otha's praise and scoffed, "Captain, is it really necessary to praise him? To me, this is just a basic move."
"If my supernatural ability was space, I'd also know to use something to block this subway."
"But honestly, what he did was just a quick fix, solving the problem around him for now. It didn't completely stop the zombie chaos. What's the point?"
Theron laughed and said, "Lanny, you're still too full of yourself! The Captain has his reasons for saying that. You need to learn to see the strengths of others and not always look down on them."
Lanny raised his eyebrows and scoffed, "I'm not looking down on him. It's just that in this kind of underground passage, if I were here, I could wipe out all the zombies by myself!"
Otha pulled his hand back and stood up.
Listening to Lanny's cocky remarks, he said calmly, "Are you that confident?"
"Of course!" Lanny said confidently.
His ability was perfect for situations like this; group battles were his thing.
Otha asked, "But do you know the strength of the Zombie King?"
Lanny was taken aback for a moment, then said, "I've never seen that thing, so how would I know!"
From the intel they had, they only knew about the powerful Bronze Elite Zombies.
As for the Zombie King, even Steven and his team, who had gone deep into the subway tunnels, had never seen it, let alone understand its strength.
Otha said calmly, "But Steven and his team cleared the entire subway line of zombies with zero casualties."
"Don't get too hung up on supernatural abilities; the key is knowing how to use them."
"Steven's power isn't just about fighting; he's the brain of his team. That's what matters."
Otha looked up, staring at the distant land.
There was a long raised ground along the subway line, leading to the Starlight City transfer station, Tranquil Vale Town.
Further north, they'd hit the Seldwa District, home to the Snowfall Cult.
Lanny still looked annoyed and muttered, "So what if he's smart? If we need new teammates, they better be strong fighters. We don't need someone to carry our bags."
Otha glanced at the somewhat cheeky Lanny and just smiled, not bothering to scold him.
Lanny had always been like this, and everyone was used to it.
Especially since Otha's health started to decline, Lanny's behavior got even more unpredictable.
Everyone understood why Lanny acted this way but didn't want to call him out.
"Alright, let's go see what a zombie siege looks like!" Otha said, leading the way to the snow-covered RV.
The driver was the vice-captain, Theron, who was about the same age as Otha, over forty.
But he didn't have an ounce of middle-aged spread; instead, he was built like a grizzly bear.
"Captain, where to?"
"Let's head to Emberwick Base first!" Otha said.
"Got it!"
Theron set the coordinates, started the vehicle, and drove towards Emberwick Base.
Meanwhile, the three major bases were buzzing with activity.
Following Otha's orders, they were temporarily abandoning all surface buildings and moving all non-combat personnel into underground shelters.
This would minimize casualties and possibly make the zombies stop attacking due to the lack of targets.
The leaders of each base, though reluctant, had to comply.
No one dared to oppose Otha, who represented the will of the Silvercrest District, at this time.
But saying it was easy, doing it was tough.
Each base had crucial facilities on the surface, with tons of supplies stored in warehouses, dormitories, and workshops.
And at least a few thousand people remained, making it a logistical nightmare.
At Emberwick Base, Megan was running around, directing combat personnel to secure the perimeter while organizing the orderly evacuation of non-combat personnel.
Otha and his team's vehicle stopped at a high point not far from Emberwick Base.
From there, they could overlook the entire area around Emberwick Base, about 3 miles away.
Otha sat by the window, pressed a button on his sunglasses, and switched to binocular mode to scope out the area.
They were waiting for the zombies to show up.
Though they'd heard about zombie hordes and rat swarms attacking human bases from the intel on Starlight City, they needed to see it firsthand to gather the info they wanted.
That's why Otha didn't ask the leaders of the major factions to join them.
Time ticked by slowly, and darkness fell in an instant.
Before they knew it, it was pitch black.
Lights flicked on around Emberwick Base.
Unlike zombies that could track human breath, humans needed light to fight.
On the investigation team's vehicle, the biologist and medical expert Eris was heating up food for everyone in the microwave.
The vehicle was stocked with a bunch of space food, which could be eaten after a quick heat-up, super convenient.
Everyone ate while using night vision binoculars to watch the zombie siege unfold.
