Chapter 263 Spy
Charles was still sorting out who was going where.
They couldn't just send everyone out; they needed enough folks to keep the base safe.
The ones staying behind wouldn't be in danger, but those heading out might not come back.
Steven had already taken out Brittany and Zane, and he could do the same to them.
Lily stepping up caught everyone's attention.
Charles was a bit taken aback.
Lily was new and didn't really know anyone. She mostly kept to herself.
Charles said, "This isn't a game; Out there, it's kill or be killed. The outside isn't as comfy as the base. Are you sure you're up for it?"
Lily nodded, slow but sure. "I just got here and haven't done anything to earn my keep. I want to prove myself."
Charles nodded, satisfied. "Alright, you're in."
He pointed to two others. "Clay, Shane, you're going too."
They stood up and saluted. "Yes, Captain Reed!"
"Captain Reed, when do we leave?" they asked, eyes full of determination.
They were ready to take down Steven's fortress and avenge Brittany and Zane.
They all knew Brittany and Zane were probably gone.
Charles said, "Hold on! That place is a fortress. Shawn and Yosef already tried; regular explosives and snipers won't cut it."
He added, "I've asked Shawn to gather intel first. We'll have engineers and demolition experts figure it out. We need to be fully prepared before we go."
Even though everyone there had psychic abilities, Charles wasn't about to rush in blindly.
Being psychic didn't make them invincible. Except for a few like Steven with spatial powers, they still had to watch out for guns.
Soon, Charles gave orders to Shawn and Yosef's team.
He told them not to come back yet but to head to Cox Town across the river. Their job was to scout and be ready to support the reinforcements.
Shawn led the team to Cox Town right away.
A dozen fully armed soldiers showing up got everyone's attention in Cox Town.
Gavin, the mayor, went to greet them. "Hello, are you from West Mountain?"
Shawn nodded. "Yeah, we're on a mission. We'll be here for a while."
Gavin nodded a lot. "You're very welcome. It's an honor to have you here!"
Other villagers wanted to get on the soldiers' good side, but Gavin was the big shot, so they didn't dare cross him.
They went home and brought out their best stuff to entertain the soldiers.
The soldiers were curious about why the villagers were so friendly.
But hey, it meant they didn't have to use their guns, which was a win.
Still, the fuss they caused was too big to miss. Even Earl noticed something was up.
Ever since Steven's warning, Earl had been on edge, worried that one day he and the whole village would get dragged into the mess with West Mountain Base.
Funny how the things you fear most tend to happen.
When Earl saw the dozen armed soldiers roll into the village, surrounded by his friends and family, his heart twisted like it was being wrung out.
Earl dropped to the floor in pain. "Are you trying to get us killed? Why bring these troublemakers here!"
Earl couldn't get why Gavin was so eager for a promotion. All he knew was that these soldiers' presence spelled big trouble for Cox Village.
If Steven found out they were hosting soldiers from West Mountain Base, he wouldn't let it slide.
Earl hesitated for a long time before making the smart move—to call Steven.
Earl figured that even if Steven wanted revenge later, at least he might save his own skin.
The call connected, and Steven's steady voice came through, "Hello."
Earl, sitting on the floor, covered the phone with his hand and whispered, "Captain Rogers, something... something bad happened!"
In his shelter, Steven frowned slightly.
He guessed it had something to do with West Mountain Base.
If they could find his shelter, they wouldn't miss a place like Cox Town.
"Did people from West Mountain Base find their way to you?" Steven asked.
"Captain Rogers, you're so smart! A team of soldiers just arrived in our village," Earl replied.
Steven got it.
Based on the timing, they were probably the ones he had driven away.
Steven's tone turned serious. "Earl, you need to be very careful! I warned you, these people aren't an official organization! Starlight City is divided by factions. They don't follow morals or laws!"
"Keep your food safe, and stay alive! They'll take everything if you let them," he reminded.
Earl swallowed, feeling scared. "Captain, don't worry. They won't catch me easily."
He was pretty good at keeping himself safe.
"Right now, they're our honored guests, and every household is treating them like royalty! No one will listen to me," Earl reported.
Steven chuckled lightly. "Then don't worry about them. Just protect yourself and those important to you."
"But Earl, I need to remind you of one thing." Steven's voice turned cold. "I consider you a brother and have always valued you. But if you ever betray me, you know the consequences!"
Earl was so timid he didn't realize the full extent of his power.
His ability to control ice and snow, if fully developed, could be terrifying!
Steven had worked hard to recruit him and didn't want him to turn traitor.
If that happened, he'd have to take Earl out himself.
Earl quickly said, "Captain Rogers, rest assured, I've always got your back!"
Steven nodded. "That's good."
Steven initially wanted to tell him to come to the shelter quickly to avoid danger outside.
But just as he was about to speak, a sudden thought made him change his mind. "Earl, stay in the village for now! I need someone to gather information for me so I can keep track of their movements."
