Chapter 431 Infinite Evolution

After two battles, Steven and his team had gathered some intelligence about the mysterious zombie horde.

They moved quickly, with beast-like strength, and hitting their heads alone wasn't enough to kill them completely.

They even showed a certain level of intelligence.

However, so far, they could only speculate whether there was a zombie king commanding the horde; they couldn't be certain.

Steven propped his chin with his hands, his eyes gleaming with calmness.

In a low voice, he said, "If those corpses have actually mutated and gained intelligence, the attacks aren't stopping. We've got a shot at gathering more intel. We need to zero in on every detail of their movements to figure out how to handle them. But first, we've gotta clear the areas around the zombie horde. They're a major threat just out there."

If the zombie horde wasn't completely eliminated, they would keep coming to harass them.

It would be hard to guarantee that no accidents would happen.

If the enemy were human, Steven wouldn't be afraid.

Humans have a sense of fear; knowing they couldn't beat Steven, they wouldn't come to harass them again.

Steven didn't want to keep such dangerous creatures around, so he decided to solve the problem as soon as possible.

Of course, this was only the trouble in his surrounding area.

"But there's another problem," Lily said, setting her broadsword down and leaning back on the couch, arms crossed. "If these corpses have mutated and gained intelligence—some kind of creature that can control a whole horde of zombies—how are they causing chaos all over Starlight City at the same time?"

Steven laughed. "I don't know."

Cindy, who had been silent, casually said, "The subway."

This word made everyone's eyes light up.

None of them had ventured deep underground.

But they could infer that the temperature underground was higher than on the surface, and transportation was convenient.

Cindy raised her head, her amber eyes gleaming with wisdom.

In a cool tone, she analyzed: "We know the closest zombie hotspot to us is Floral Springs Subway Station. Starlight City's subway system is massive—it connects everywhere. So, the zombies are using it to spread across the city. Whether that's on purpose or just random luck, we'll figure that out later."

Steven propped his chin with one hand and nodded thoughtfully. "That makes sense. Emerald Estate's pretty out of the way, and only the Floral Springs subway line runs through here. That's why we've got the smallest horde on our hands."

He turned to Cindy and added, "Cindy, keep tabs on the other factions. I need intel on the zombie situation in their areas. We've gotta figure out how to take these things down—for good."

Cindy smiled and nodded, "Got it. But right now, they're all in a tight spot.”

All three major bases have underground shelters, but they've also got critical facilities above ground—steel mills, refineries, coastal ports. Those are their lifelines. They can't just let the zombies tear through them; they'll fight tooth and nail to protect them. That means they're stuck in constant battles with the hordes.

And Snowfall Cult? They're worse off. Their living conditions are rough, and their losses against the zombies are brutal. They don't even have proper defenses to hold the horde back.

Steven let out a low chuckle, his tone casual. "Not our problem. If they're too stubborn to cut their losses, let them keep fighting. Especially Snowfall Cult—their numbers are growing, and that's starting to make me uneasy. A little thinning out during this crisis? Works for me."

Everyone imagined and discussed how other factions would handle the zombie horde.

Human joys and sorrows are not connected.

Especially since Steven's team didn't have a good relationship with the other factions.

So seeing them being overwhelmed by the zombie horde actually made Steven feel quite good.

In the afternoon, Steven and a few others came to the front of the shelter's gate.

They poured a large amount of gasoline on the ground.

Now that they knew the zombies were essentially a mutated virus, they could deal with them more easily.

Using fire to inactivate the virus could easily eliminate a large number of zombies.

The third wave of the zombie horde attack came faster than expected.

This time, it was at midnight.

Fortunately, Steven and his team were prepared; they didn't sleep too deeply and had arranged for night watch.

So when the zombie horde attacked, they were ready to go out and fight immediately.

"Attacking at night now? Did they realize we perform better during the day, or is it just a coincidence?"

Steven strapped on a flamethrower and cautiously went downstairs.

But this time, the zombies' attack route had changed.

They weren't packed together like before—now they were spread out across the snowfield, moving toward the shelter like a damn plague of locusts.

"Looks like… they're actually getting smarter," Henry muttered, cigarette dangling from his lips.

This way, the gasoline traps they had set up in advance were less effective.

"It's bad, but also good. At least our guess was right!" Steven coldly watched the zombie horde on the snowfield.

He was certain that there was a zombie king controlling everything behind the scenes.

Every time they fought, the enemy adapted, tweaking their tactics based on how Steven's team operated.

Sure, they started off sloppy, but both the zombie king and his minions were learning, evolving.

One day, when they'd cracked every move Steven and his crew had, they'd be trapped, stuck inside the shelter with no way out.

"Now even the damn zombies are playing spy games," Steven said, blowing out a cloud of smoke before snapping his helmet visor shut. "Next, I need to check something out."

He turned to Lily and the others. "This time, wipe them out. No survivors."

With that, he hopped onto Fluffy's back. "Let's cut off their escape."

Steven held a shotgun in his hand.

Against these undead zombies, blasting them to pieces was the most effective!

Henry laughed heartily, "Alright! Let's have a good kill today!"

Earl sneered, "What's so fun about killing a bunch of corpses."

Henry wasn't angry; instead, he said to Earl, "Earl, with so many live targets, you can use them to practice your skills!"

Earl didn't respond but started to summon a massive blizzard in front of the shelter.

The zombies let out eerie screams, and upon discovering Steven and the others, they suddenly started running towards them frantically.

The team was experienced in dealing with them and didn't panic.

Earl created a blizzard to temporarily make the zombies lose their targets and slow down their movements.

Then, Henry began using the flamethrower, burning rows of zombies like spraying insecticide!

Lily, wielding her broadsword, moved like a blue lightning bolt around the perimeter of the zombie horde.

No matter how fast the zombies were, they couldn't match the speed of a Strengthening System Psychic.

As long as she wasn't surrounded like last time, the zombies couldn't handle Lily.

And Lily's sword cleaved them from head to groin, ensuring they couldn't get up to attack again.

As for Steven, he rode Fluffy and circled around to the back of the zombie horde.

He didn't aim for the head or body with his shotgun; he aimed for the legs!

With the supernatural ability-enhanced shotgun, the close-range attack was incredibly powerful, easily shattering their lower bodies!

Fluffy raised its head and gave Steven a look.

Steven understood and jumped off its back.

Fluffy's black fur turned into hard steel needles, and then the entire cat curled into a giant black ball, crashing into the middle of the zombie horde!

It was like a giant tank rolling over the zombies, with the black fur turning into blades, slicing the zombies into pieces.
