Chapter 400 Uncertainty
In the apocalypse, it's all about self-interest—loyalty's a fairytale.
People and factions play each other. One minute they're allies, the next they're stabbing each other in the back.
He doesn't trust a soul, so he's got to game out every move.
The best-case scenario for this fight? Exactly how he planned it.
But even if things go south—if Frostwood Base and Snowfall Cult flip sides and team up with Emberwick and Silverlake to hit the shelter—Steven wouldn't bat an eye. He's ready for it all.
"I can ditch the top two floors and bunker down underground. That's the worst-case scenario, but it'll cost you big. You'll take heavy losses," Steven thought, his tone icy.
He knew he was one of the top Psychics in Starlight City—maybe not the strongest, but damn close. Few could match him.
When Steven played it safe, focusing on defense and counterattacks, the havoc he could wreak was beyond anyone's imagination.
In the middle of the night, Steven's door was suddenly knocked on urgently.
"Steven, Steven! Nora's losing it!" Elinor's voice was frantic outside.
Steven jumped out of bed, waking Fluffy from its sleep.
Steven walked over to open the door while checking the surveillance of that room on his phone.
Sure enough, he saw Nora tied to the bed with restraints, her face flushed and covered in sweat.
A white light was flickering in the center of her forehead, as if something was about to burst out.
"Let's go and check it out!" Steven's voice was very serious.
If he found any signs that Nora was being controlled, he would not hesitate to disable her.
Worse, if she was out of control, he wouldn't hesitate to put her down for good.
After all, Psychics are inherently full of uncertainties.
Elinor followed behind Steven, sensing something off about his aura, and didn't dare to speak.
Steven brought Fluffy to the room.
But by then, the abnormal sweating and flushing on Nora had already subsided.
She lay on the bed, panting, unable to move due to the medication.
"Nora, Nora?" Steven called softly, not approaching.
Nora slowly opened her eyes and, seeing Steven, forced a smile of joy. "Steven, I did it!"
At that moment, Fluffy suddenly jumped onto the bed, walked a few steps on Nora with its tail up, and then looked at Steven calmly.
Seeing this, Steven finally relaxed.
The mutant cat's intuition is hundreds of times stronger than a human's.
If Nora had any abnormalities, even the slightest change in aura, it would detect it.
Fluffy was telling Steven that the Nora in front of him was still the woman he knew well.
'Am I overthinking this? The four major forces cleared Frostheart—no red flags. But seriously, no side effects at all?' Steven couldn't shake the doubt.
But he quickly discarded that thought.
Better safe than sorry, right?
Steven didn't untie Nora's restraints but asked, "How do you feel now? What kind of ability did you awaken?"
When a Psychic awakens a Supernatural ability, they immediately know what it is.
It's like growing an extra hand; they can clearly feel its presence and understand how to use it.
Nora closed her eyes to sense her ability, then suddenly smiled, "As expected, I'm only good for housework!"
There was no disappointment on her face; she seemed quite satisfied with her ability.
"My ability's SuperFood Heal. The food I make can restore others' Supernatural energy," she laughed. "Totally a support skill! But that's fine; I was never cut out for fighting anyway."
Steven's expression relaxed, and he leaned against the door with a faint smile. "It's indeed a very useful ability. No more freaking out about running low during fights."
He glanced at Elinor. "Elinor, get her out of those restraints."
Elinor, full of envy, walked over and untied Nora.
But Nora, due to the medication, still couldn't move.
"Show us your ability tomorrow when you've recovered," Steven said with a smile.
"Okay!" Although Nora was drenched in sweat, her eyes were bright.
She finally had something to contribute, proving she wasn't just a dispensable person!
Steven left, leaving Elinor to look after Nora.
The ability to make food that replenishes Supernatural ability isn't very strong, but it's very useful.
With a big battle coming up, having an extra support member is definitely a good thing.
"Jordan was right—Frostheart's effect depends on personal potential. Nora's potential is limited, so even with a Supernatural ability, it's just a support type. Kinda like Chase," Steven thought to himself.
He couldn't help but think about the Frostheart he still had.
After a moment, he decided to hold off on using it.
No need to rush into creating a Psychic.
He'd keep an eye on Nora a bit longer.
Once he ruled out any risks, he'd give it to Elinor or Aubrey.
The next day arrived.
In the morning, Steven called Sebastian. "Come over now! The meeting place has changed to Cox Town in the Eternal River District."
Sebastian frowned and said, "Your territory?"
Steven laughed, "I'm the one being surrounded and attacked, not you. It's always better to be cautious. You don't suspect I have ulterior motives, do you?"
The agreed time was 2:30 PM, but Steven never intended to stick to it.
Because once the time and place were set, Sebastian might bring people to ambush.
Steven liked to eliminate all uncertainties.
Sebastian snorted, "Fine, Cox Town it is!"
He had the scoop on Steven and his squad.
Sure, he didn't know their exact skills, but he knew Steven was running a small operation.
Outside the shelter, Steven wouldn't stand a chance against a full-blown base-level force.
Sebastian and his crew mostly stuck to their turf, so timing was fuzzy. They decided to touch base once they hit Cox Town.
