Chapter 494 A Painful Victory
After what felt like forever, Otha and the crew finally made it back.
The seven of them looked pretty beat up, not as cool and collected as they usually were.
Theron was helping Lanny, who usually had that cocky vibe, but now he was pale and shaky, like he could barely stand.
Daron, the guy with the Strengthening System powers, had a bandage on his shoulder, and one of his arms was all twisted up, clearly messed up from the fight.
The seven of them were all covered in blood, each with their own set of injuries.
But they had these relieved smiles on their faces.
It was obvious that their mission to take out the Zombie Kings was just as tough as what Steven and his team went through.
But they pulled it off.
The investigation team rolled up to the Snowfall Cult camp, and Otha took a look at the survivors, his face pretty blank.
They'd won, but it was a brutal fight, and everyone gave it their all. It wasn't easy.
No need for any sappy words.
Steven walked over and asked Otha, "Did you get all the Zombie Kings?"
Otha replied, all business, "There were five. We got them all. Bodies are in the car."
"That's good."
With Otha's confirmation, everyone let out a breath they didn't know they were holding.
Without the Zombie Kings calling the shots, the remaining zombies in Starlight City were just a bunch of headless chickens.
At least they didn't have to worry about another massive attack.
Steven thought for a second and pulled out some Supernatural ability food from his extradimensional space, handing it to Otha.
"What's this?" Otha's tone was curious.
"Food made by a Psychic. Helps restore Supernatural ability, physical strength, and mental state. Pretty handy!" Steven grinned.
Hearing that, Otha managed a small, awkward smile. "Looks like you've got a good support Psychic."
He didn't hesitate to take the food from Steven and then headed back to the snow vehicle with a few team members.
As for the others, knowing all the Zombie Kings were taken care of, they could finally chill and rest a bit.
Everyone was too wiped out to chat much.
The fighters went back to their spots to rest, while the non-combat folks took care of them with food and treatment.
The night passed without any drama.
After a day's rest, everyone was feeling a lot better, both mentally and physically.
But there were still too many injured, and given the situation, leaving wasn't an option.
So, they decided to stay at the Snowfall Cult camp and rest up before heading back.
There was also the issue of the remaining zombies in Starlight City.
Even without the Zombie Kings, they still had that instinct to attack humans.
Right now, it was safest for everyone to stick together.
Steven and his team could've left, but at Otha's request, Steven decided to stay.
They were the strongest team in the coalition now.
Otha hoped they could protect everyone until they were all healthy enough to leave.
Despite Steven's desire to get back to the shelter and crash in his soft bed with Elinor in his arms, he had to resprect the Silvercrest District.
So, Steven and his crew stuck around, mainly taking care of the stray zombies near the camp. A piece of cake, actually.
Small groups of zombies, just a few thousand, without the Zombie Kings to guide them, were just running on instinct and weren't much of a threat.
A few Psychics working together could handle them no problem.
After a few days, everyone could tell the zombie issue was getting better.
They could slowly clean up the rest.
Otha and his team were keeping an eye on things, and once they were sure there were no more big zombie movements in Starlight City, they'd head back to Silvercrest District to report.
After fighting side by side for days, the relationships among the five major—or rather, small—forces had definitely changed.
Their main fighters had taken over 80% losses in this battle, which really weakened their strength.
Luckily, the zombies didn't discriminate, and besides attacking them, other small and medium-sized groups in Starlight City also got wiped out.
Otherwise, it would've been tough to hold onto their territories after this fight.
But in a dead city with hardly any living people, no matter how big the territory was, it was hard to feel any joy.
So, the previous tension among the five major forces had faded.
They felt a sense of mutual sympathy, even a feeling of shared misfortune.
Steven noticed this the most.
The other forces had been showing goodwill towards them during this time.
Among the five major forces, Steven's team had the smallest losses.
In fact, Steven's only loss in this war was a bunch of ammo, nothing else.
And weapons and ammo weren't a big deal at all.
Steven had his own arsenal, and Aubrey, a master mechanic, was always making more for him.
So, for the foreseeable future, Steven's team would be the strongest force in Starlight City.
Megan was the first to come over and show some goodwill to Steven.
"Steven, we've had our differences in the past, but now Starlight City is in ruins, and it's hard to say if there are even ten thousand people left."
"Can we be friends from now on? None of us can afford the cost of war anymore. If you need anything from me, just ask."
Megan extended her hand to Steven gracefully.
She was tough and heroic, and her image of leading troops bravely on the battlefield left a deep impression on Steven.
Unlike the women around Steven, she was a very capable woman.
Steven was a peace-loving guy, and since Megan was making the first move, he wasn't going to refuse.
Even though there had been conflicts before, they were just over resources, not personal grudges.
So, Steven shook her hand and smiled, "I've always admired you for leading a major force as a woman!"
He curiously asked, "I see you're quite skilled, did you work in the military or police before?"
Megan smiled faintly, "I worked at the Starlight City Police Department."
Steven laughed, "A true heroine!"
He suddenly had a thought and smiled at Megan. "Does that mean you have information on all of us?"
Megan replied openly, "Of course, just basic, though. And that's only up until the apocalypse."
