Chapter 271 Where's the Explosives?
Charles's crew lobbed a bunch of smoke grenades and incendiary bombs at Emerald Estate to keep Steven from picking off the demolition team.
Next up, they had the bomb squad start defusing the bombs around the mansion.
Their approach? Pretty blunt and straightforward. Instead of carefully defusing the bombs, they just used detonation cords to blow them up directly.
This is a common military tactic—cover a big area with chain explosives and set off the surrounding bombs with one big boom.
Steven cranked up his noise-canceling tech to max, cutting off all the outside noise in an instant.
To save his eardrums from the upcoming blasts, he also put on a pair of pro-grade noise-canceling headphones.
Sure, it made him almost deaf, but he figured it was worth it, considering the other side might use a ton of explosives to blow up the shelter.
The explosions outside were nonstop, and all the bomb traps Steven had set up got triggered by the other side.
Steven sighed. "Pros are just pros, huh?"
He felt a bit bummed, but not too much.
When you're up against professionals, you gotta expect the unexpected.
Last time, he managed to blow up Shawn and his crew, but luck wouldn't always be on his side.
This time, the other side was ready, so no way they were gonna walk into his traps.
Once the traps on the outskirts were cleared, Charles barked, "Demolition team, move in! Everyone else, get ready to cover."
Behind Charles, including Lily, three captain-level Psychics were on standby.
If they saw any sign of Steven, they'd attack right away.
But with the shelter in the way, they had no chance to use their skills.
Lily, on the other hand, secretly hoped Steven would surprise her.
Meanwhile, Steven was cool as a cucumber.
No matter what the other side did, he was ready to let them try.
After all, the shelter was all about defense, not offense.
But if they wanted to take down his shelter, they'd have to do it with demolition.
Steven watched the monitor in his hand.
Even though the whole area was covered in thick white smoke, it wasn't enough to completely block his view. If the smoke had been any thicker, it would've blinded the demolition soldiers too.
So the white smoke was just to keep him from sniping.
But thanks to the community-wide monitoring system, Steven could see the blurry figures moving toward the shelter.
"They're coming!" Steven's eyes turned calm and sharp.
The real action was about to start.
To defend this shelter, the key was to stop the other side's demolition.
He planned to use the extradimensional space to absorb the shockwave from the explosion.
So Steven didn't make any offensive moves, just watched where the other side was setting up and followed them.
A few minutes later, he spotted the demolition soldiers through the remaining surveillance outside the wall.
Each of these guys had heavy explosives strapped to their backs. When they reached the wall, they placed the explosives underneath and set up the detonators.
Steven watched them closely.
In no time, these demolition pros had set up 1100 pounds of explosives and quickly backed off.
Steven's eyes widened, staring at the pile of explosives outside the wall.
"They just left like that?" he muttered.
Well, it made sense; if they stuck around, they'd get blown to bits.
They had to get to a safe distance and then detonate remotely.
But for Steven, this was a jaw-dropper.
He rubbed his chin and mumbled, "Maybe I overthought this from the start."
After setting up the explosives, the demolition team quickly left Emerald Estate as planned.
I mean, 1100 pounds of TNT? That could level a skyscraper!
They had to get far enough away before setting it off.
Meanwhile, Charles and his crew reached a small hill nearby, watching the smoke-covered shelter from a distance.
The walkie-talkie crackled with the demolition team's voice. "Captain Reed, the explosives are set, and we're clear. Ready to detonate on your command!"
Charles grinned. "Roger that."
He pulled out the detonator and said to his teammates, "This mission's easier than we thought! I figured this Steven guy, who took out so many of our comrades, would put up more of a fight!"
With that, Charles lightly pressed the detonation switch.
Everyone covered their ears, bracing for the massive explosion.
But after a few seconds, nothing happened.
"Why didn't it blow up?" Lily frowned, puzzled.
Charles found it odd too and pressed the remote several more times. Still nothing.
"What's going on?" Charles frowned and radioed the demolition team. "Why didn't the explosives go off when I hit the switch?"
The demolition team was just as confused. "No way! We double-checked everything. The setup was perfect."
Charles was getting ticked off. These were his top guys, and a rookie mistake like this was unacceptable!
He barked, "Look, I pressed the switch, and nothing happened. Go check it out and fix whatever's wrong, pronto!"
"Yes, sir!" The demolition team couldn't believe they messed up.
But the detonation failed, so something had to be off.
A few team members ran back to the site to see what was up.
When they got there, they were stunned!
The pile of explosives that had been at the corner of the wall was gone!
"Where are the explosives?" The demolition team members were dumbfounded, even thinking they might've gone to the wrong spot.
On the other side of the wall, Steven looked at the 1100 pounds of explosives in his extradimensional space and fell into deep thought.
"Isn't this... a bit too easy?" he muttered. He didn't want it to be this easy! The other side was just too dumb.
They piled a bunch of explosives at his wall and then left.
Steven sighed. "They're all so generous!"
On the hill, Charles was floored by the news from the walkie-talkie.
"What? The explosives are gone? How could they be gone? Didn't you set them up yourselves? What the hell?!"
