Chapter 40 Gunshots
Steven ignited the stink bomb and quickly threw it out through the shooting hole above the door.
After the stink bomb landed, a large plume of black smoke quickly rose.
The pungent odor quickly spread through the corridor.
Alice and Ivy smelled the odor, feeling as if they had opened a can of sealed feces from ten years ago, causing them to vomit on the spot.
"Ew... What is that, ugh..."
"Steven, ugh... You are so shameless!"
The stench in the hallway grew stronger, prompting the two women to flee quickly.
Steven, unconcerned about the stench returning to the room, sealed the shooting hole, leaving the room in a semi-sealed state.
Although the air could still circulate, the house was specially equipped with an air filtration system during construction to prevent any unpleasant odors and harmful air from entering.
Through surveillance, he saw the two women fleeing while vomiting, which made Steven burst into laughter.
However, he soon received a complaint from the neighbor next door.
"Steven, what did you throw at your door? It smells awful! Could you please consider the neighbors' feelings?"
Steven's neighbors were a young couple who had moved in two years ago.
However, Steven had little interaction with them on regular days, at most nodding to them in the elevator.
At this point, he was not interested in maintaining any neighborly relationship.
Everything he did was solely for his own safety, and he didn't care about others in the apocalyptic.
As long as he could live safely and comfortably, he wouldn't even hesitate to eliminate others.
In this post-apocalyptic world, any sense of kindness was forbidden; once it appeared, it had to be immediately eradicated!
"If you have a problem, come and fight with me!"
After saying this, Steven immediately blocked the neighbor.
He couldn't be bothered to argue with the neighbor; it would be a waste of his breath.
Soon, Steven noticed the neighbors cursing him in the group chat.
Unfortunately, no one seemed to care about their affairs.
Steven smirked mischievously, feeling quite content without any moral qualms.
That afternoon, Steven was suddenly awakened from his sleep.
A loud noise reverberated through the hallway, quickly spreading throughout the entire building.
Steven's expression turned serious; the sound resembled gunfire.
In their community, did someone have a gun?
Uncertain whether it was a gun or fireworks, Steven quickly went to the living room to check the surveillance footage.
What he saw made his pupils dilate involuntarily.
In front of the door on the third floor, Andrew, who had a broken leg, was holding a black gun.
The cold, dark gleam of the gun easily sent shivers down one's spine.
The door of that apartment was open, and from the surveillance angle, one could vaguely see two human legs.
Meanwhile, Andrew's henchmen were carrying food and candles, walking out with cheerful smiles.
It was evident that the resident on the third floor was either dead or soon to die, having lost all their supplies.
It was 10 a.m., the usual time for all households to go out, collect snow, and melt it for drinking water.
By doing this together, they could temporarily raise the temperature in the hallway, preventing it from getting too cold.
Since no one could survive without water, this activity was carried out daily.
Andrew took advantage of this timing to start killing and looting.
Suddenly, the phone rang.
Steven picked up the phone and saw a message from the group chat.
Andrew had sent a voice message.
"Now that the city is snowed in, we can't rely on anyone else but ourselves. I will take on the responsibility of overseeing the building 25 from now on. Everything here will be under my control!"
"Behave yourselves, and then I can ensure your safety. If anyone dares disobey...!"
Following that, Andrew sent two pictures.
One showed him holding the gun, and the other depicted the resident of the third floor lying in a pool of blood.
The once lively group chat fell silent.
Everyone was shocked by the bloody and brutal scene.
Most residents were filled with fear at that moment.
When in peace, had they ever seen such a thing? Of course not.
They couldn't even imagine it.
Yet now, the blood-stained reality was right in front of them.
In this snow-covered building, it was like hell on earth!
No one dared to speak out against Andrew because they were all afraid of death.
Lying on the sofa, Steven couldn't help but comment, "Andrew is clever! He truly is a figure who can navigate society effortlessly."
Andrew used a combination of coercion and inducement; he didn't just resort to threats against the building's owners because he only had one gun, and no one knew how many bullets he had left.
But Steven knew there couldn't be many, considering the strict gun control in the country.
Initially, Steven had paid a hefty sum, and the seller had only given him 100 bullets.
Besides, Andrew only had five or six men left.
With around fifty households in the building and over a hundred residents, a cripple like him wouldn't stand a chance if he pushed them too far.
So, he used a mix of coercion and inducement, promising a better future while also intimidating them, the best way to keep the owners in line.
Human always feared death.
Even though they understood that Andrew could kill the third-floor owner today and potentially target them tomorrow, they still held onto a glimmer of hope.
For instance, those living on higher floors believed that if Andrew killed the third-floor resident today, it would be the fourth floor tomorrow, giving them some time to prepare.
And the residents on the fourth floor thought Andrew might not follow a specific order in his killings, so it was safer to stay put at home instead of resisting.
Steven shrugged; these matters had nothing to do with him.
While others dared not defy Andrew, Steven had no fear of him.
If Andrew dared to show up at his doorstep, Steven held his fate in his hands.
As for the other neighbors, whether they lived or died made no difference to Steven.
They chose to bury their heads in the sand and avoid resistance.
Steven had no delusions of being a hero, sacrificing himself to save others.
At that moment, the phone suddenly emitted a series of urgent sounds.
Steven picked up the phone and saw hundreds of new messages!
He realized he had been added to a new group.
Curious, Steven entered the group to take a look.
He discovered that the building owners had created a new group, excluding Andrew and his men.
The death threats brought by Andrew had prompted some people to consider uniting and resisting.
Steven remained silent, confident in his own safety.
He was curious to see what this group of people could accomplish.
