Chapter 355 Emberwick Base
Outside the Horizon Group's materials factory, Steven parked his car not far from several other modified snow vehicles.
Their arrival had already caught the attention of the Emberwick Base personnel.
By the time they got closer, five or six people were already leaning against their cars, aiming their guns at them.
"Stop! This place has been taken over by Emberwick Base. Which faction are you from? Go somewhere else!" A man with long hair and a beard shouted.
Steven remained vigilant, having already activated his quadruple-speed ability.
If any of them made a move to pull the trigger, Steven would immediately kill them all!
"Stay in the car and don't move!" Steven said to Aubrey.
Steven noticed that the weapons in their hands were basic firearms, incapable of damaging his car, which was equipped with bulletproof glass similar to that of a shelter. Only then did he feel safe enough to get out of the car.
A black cat, tail raised, elegantly followed in Steven's footsteps.
Steven raised his hands slightly and said to the people in front of him, "Don't misunderstand, I mean no harm. I have no issue with you getting to this factory first. I just need some materials. I hope you can make an exception."
However, when the Emberwick Base people saw Steven in a combat uniform similar to that of West Mountain Base, their expressions became much more serious.
"Didn't they say West Mountain Base was wiped out?" someone whispered.
And someone else replied, "Maybe he's a remnant. There were so many people at West Mountain Base; they couldn't all be dead, right?"
"Good thing it's not one of the other factions; otherwise, we'd be in trouble."
"What's left of West Mountain Base? Who could still be a threat?"
"But his car is really nice."
Someone had already set their sights on Steven's snow vehicle.
They were driving knock-offs with poor performance, slow speed, and high fuel consumption.
A cautious person whispered, "Don't act rashly! Do you think someone who can drive such a good car at a time like this is just an ordinary person?"
His eyes were filled with apprehension. "Especially when facing so many of us, that guy didn't show a hint of fear. He's definitely not easy to deal with! Notify the captain to come over!"
Someone immediately used a communicator to contact the captain inside the factory.
At the same time, someone shouted to Steven, "We'll talk about this when our captain gets here!"
Steven wore a relaxed smile, but he was extremely vigilant inside.
Steven looked toward the factory. Someone was entering the factory using the same method he had previously used, descending from the skylight.
"Alright, I can wait." Steven smiled and took two steps back, keeping his hands in their line of sight.
Of course, if Steven really wanted to kill, he wouldn't necessarily need a gun.
It would be best to talk things out with these people. Steven didn't want to make enemies with both Silverlake Base and Emberwick Base at the same time.
After a while, a few people climbed out of the factory.
Leading them was a man with a full beard. His combat uniform was also white, but his shoulders bore a red flame emblem.
This indicated that he was a captain-level figure in Emberwick Base.
'This guy, even if he's not a Psychic, is definitely a formidable character!' Steven immediately made this judgment inwardly.
Emberwick Base's captain, Christian Diaz, looked at Steven with eyes as sharp as a hawk's.
In the post-apocalyptic world, any stranger you encounter could be an enemy, and no one dared to be careless.
But Christian only saw one car, two people, and a cat, while he had a dozen subordinates with him, which made him feel more at ease.
"Who are you from West Mountain Base?" Christian asked coldly, sizing up Steven.
Steven's lips curled slightly. "Special Forces Captain from West Mountain Base, Anthony Bailey!"
Steven didn't remove his mask, and they didn't know what he looked like.
For now, borrowing the name of West Mountain Base was better than revealing his true identity.
Moreover, the other side only knew that West Mountain Base's main headquarters was gone, but they couldn't determine if there were any remaining forces from West Mountain Base.
As the most militarily powerful of the four major bases, it was impossible for the other bases not to be wary of West Mountain Base.
Sure enough, upon hearing Steven identify himself, Christian's expression became even more serious.
"So you really are a captain from West Mountain Base! No wonder you dared to come here with just one person. What, are you here to drive us away?" Christian thought Steven was there to expel him, and his demeanor became somewhat hostile. "Don't blame me for not warning you. West Mountain Base's main headquarters has been destroyed. Your remaining forces are no match for Emberwick Base! So, don't get any dangerous ideas!"
Christian had already believed Steven's story.
After all, that kind of combat uniform was officially made and only available to the four major bases.
It would be too difficult for outsiders to replicate, and it's hard to imagine anyone having the resources to do so in the post-apocalyptic world.
Seeing that Christian believed his fabricated story, Steven calmly said, "It's just a materials factory. If Emberwick Base wants it, take as much as you can! But we also need to take some materials now. I hope you won't stop us!"
Christian's expression kept changing after hearing Steven's words.
They were ordered to come to Eternal River District to occupy some important resource points, but they hadn't expected to encounter remnants of West Mountain Base.
However, Steven was right. Such a large factory would be too difficult for them to monopolize. They didn't need that many building materials anyway.
After thinking it over, Christian said to Steven, "Alright. But I'll only give you half an hour!"
Steven smiled. It was best to talk things out. Steven didn't want to clash with these people. After all, he had no love for slaughter.
Steven waved to the car behind him, signaling Aubrey to come down and join him.
Aubrey was needed to identify the materials, and Steven had to keep Aubrey by his side to ensure her safety.
Christian made a few hand signals to his subordinates, who understood and made way for Steven.
Aubrey, both nervous and excited, quickly came to Steven's side.
For safety, Steven held Aubrey in his arms. The sudden warmth made Aubrey's heart race, and his face turned red even in the -140°F cold.
"Let's go," Steven said calmly to Aubrey.
"But what about our car? Shouldn't we put it away?"
Aubrey was worried about the snow vehicle, afraid that the Emberwick Base people might take it.
"Don't worry, they can't take it," Steven said softly, without further explanation.
Steven would never easily use his abilities in front of others.
A Psychic's ability was his strength, but it also contained his weaknesses—a truth that had become clear to Steven since he killed Charles.
Aubrey bit his lip but obediently followed Steven toward the factory.
Fluffy, walking gracefully, followed closely behind them, seemingly unaffected by the extreme cold.
As Steven and Aubrey slowly walked toward the factory.
Behind them, Christian's narrowed eyes suddenly opened wide.
Christian's right hand moved at a speed invisible to the naked eye, reaching into his pocket and then pulling the trigger directly at Steven's back!
