Chapter 488 The Flames of War

The zombie horde was closing in.

They poured out from three subway entrances, a dark mass like an anthill disturbed, with countless zombies spilling out.

In no time, the whole area was swarming with zombies, and more kept coming from the depths of the subway.

Within minutes, seventy to eighty thousand zombies surrounded Snowfall Cult, with Bronze Elite Zombies among them.

And there were swarms of rats darting through the zombie horde!

Even though everyone was mentally prepared, seeing this scene made them curse.

Otha and the crew had already driven away from Snowfall Cult.

They were the main players in the decapitation operation and wouldn't be part of the front-line fight.

So, the five major forces had to handle the pressure on the front line.

Without a word, Steven took Elinor to the Church of the Holy Ground and handed her over to Natasha.

Steven stared at Natasha and said, "Please, make sure she's safe!"

Natasha didn't say anything, but there were always two Psychics outside the church door, specifically responsible for the safety inside.

With them there, even if zombies broke through the outer defenses, they could hold out for a while.

After making sure Elinor was safe, Steven ran back to his post.

And outside Snowfall Cult, the cannons had already started booming!

To prep for this battle, all the major forces had brought out their big guns.

The three major bases had set up their stockpiled cannons and rocket launchers along the rear of the battlefield.

Regular firearms weren't very effective against zombies, but these were a different story.

As long as they were carbon-based life forms, there was no way they could survive being blown to bits.

As the cannons roared, flares shot into the sky, lighting up the whole area around Snowfall Cult like it was daytime!

Under the bright light, the packed zombies and rat swarms on the ground created immense pressure!

A single cannon shot could take out dozens of zombies, creating gaps in the horde.

However, these gaps would quickly be filled by nearby zombies.

Soon, the zombie horde was just a mile away from the fortifications.

The second line of defense kicked in—Three walls of fire were set up around Snowfall Cult, and a ton of flammable material was poured below.

As soon as the zombie horde got close, the flammable material was ignited!

The density of the zombie horde was so high that once the walls of fire started burning, they'd incinerate a chain of zombies.

Steven used Double Dimension Door to reach a high vantage point and started sniping zombies methodically.

At his feet were ten duffel bags filled with tens of thousands of bullets.

From his elevated position, he could clearly see the pressure on each part of the battlefield.

Steven sighed, then raised his sniper rifle.

With one shot, a zombie's head exploded into a cloud of blood.

The headless zombie hadn't completely lost its ability to move but, unable to determine direction, was soon trampled by other zombies.

Steven quickly adjusted his aim, his shooting almost non-stop.

With his Precision shooting ability, he could take down a zombie every two seconds.

Steven would adjust his aim based on the battlefield situation, prioritizing the nearest zombie clusters.

It felt like playing a tower defense game, but the pressure was way beyond what you could call a "game."

On this battlefield, Steven's individual skills were pretty limited.

Sure, he could take out hundreds more zombies than a regular soldier, but he couldn't single-handedly turn the tide of the battle.

His abilities weren't like Otha's; he didn't have those massive, high-damage attacks.

The zombie horde, braving gunfire and artillery, crossed the walls of fire, roaring as they charged towards the fortifications. Then, they were met with heavy machine guns and autocannons!

These bad boys could pierce armored vehicles and shred through a horde of zombies, way stronger than regular pistols and rifles that were useless against them!

"Aim for their legs!" Megan stood at the front line, commanding the battle with a serious expression.

In these five days, humans had been cooking up all sorts of plans.

The zombie horde had learned their combat methods, and humans had been tweaking their tactics too.

Zombies were hard to kill? Then they just needed to make the zombies unable to move!

Heavy machine guns fired non-stop, spewing blue flames, aiming at the legs of the zombies at the front.

Soon, limbs were flying, and their lower bodies were getting severed left and right.

The zombies at the front fell, losing their ability to move, still crawling forward while roaring.

But they were trampled by the zombies behind them.

The zombie horde picked up speed, moving like wild beasts.

And at each fortification, a large group of soldiers was ready, waiting for them.

They had injected themselves with red military stimulants in advance, allowing them to fight for longer periods.

With their nerves stimulated, they wouldn't feel pain, and their fear of death would diminish.

They were the elite of each force, all decked out in strong combat suits that could even withstand bullets from regular firearms. These suits would protect them from zombies' claws and fangs.

The only worry was the giant rats with teeth that could bite through steel.

Their weapons weren't guns but rather steel battle axes and heavy machetes, specially provided by Frostwood Base, incredibly sharp. With them in hand, trained soldiers could decapitate zombies in one strike!

Once the zombies crossed the initial fortifications, it was time for these soldiers to take action!

And the final line of defense was undoubtedly the most powerful Psychics of the five major forces!

Steven stayed on the high building, holding a Magnum Sniper Rifle, sniping with precision.

After finishing a round of bullets, he'd switch to another sniper rifle to avoid overheating the barrel.

In the few minutes since the battle began, he'd already taken out over two hundred zombies, which would be an amazing feat in a human battlefield.

But against an army of hundreds of thousands of zombies, it was just a drop in the ocean.

Steven wasn't in a rush, though.

Ordinary zombies were easy kills; he was really interested in the elite Bronze Elite Zombies within the horde.

After the last battle, Steven had a solid understanding of their defenses.

Their skin, muscles, and bones were as tough as steel, and even heavy machine gun bullets had a hard time causing damage.

So, Steven had Aubrey specially prepare large-caliber armor-piercing rounds for them.

Combined with an anti-materiel sniper rifle and his Supernatural ability, could he pull off something amazing?
