Chapter 240 Target: Emerald Estate
Gavin, trying to cover his tracks, quickly threw Steven under the bus.
Steven was a Psychic too, so mentioning him was a perfect way to divert attention and keep Earl's existence under wraps. Gavin, a master manipulator, skillfully steered the villagers' anger towards Steven, using their grief to his advantage.
"That Steven is a monster! He killed over a hundred people in our village!"
"We're too scared to speak out against him."
"It's great you're here now! You have to get justice for us!"
No one wanted to expose Earl, their protector.
Coincidentally, Brittany and Zane were here to find Steven. By sheer luck, they got the info they needed. Both were pretty pleased.
Once they wrapped up this final investigation, they could head back to base and report.
Plus, discovering Cox Town was a nice bonus for them.
Brittany quickly started asking the villagers about Steven.
Gavin racked his brain but couldn't remember Steven's age, height, or appearance.
That night, they fought in the dark, with Steven chasing them down with a Magnum Sniper Rifle.
"We only know there are a bunch of traps around his house. And he has a gun. Also, he has a vehicle that can drive in the snow," Gavin said.
Brittany and Zane took detailed notes.
Especially about the weapons and traps, which would be super useful for their investigation.
"What's his Supernatural ability? Anyone know?" Brittany asked, clearly concerned.
Psychic abilities varied a lot.
Some people's mutations were totally negative, not only failing to gain powerful abilities but also causing physical abnormalities.
Other people's abilities weren't very useful.
But a powerful psychic would be valuable to West Mountain Base.
At this point, Gavin and the others were stumped.
When they fought Steven, they were already in bad shape just dealing with the traps and sniper rifle.
They had never seen Steven use any abilities. All this info was from Earl.
Gavin awkwardly smiled. "We don't really know what his Supernatural ability is. We just feel he's very unusual, not like an ordinary person."
"You'll have to investigate this!"
A hint of disappointment flashed in Brittany's eyes.
Only by understanding a Psychic's abilities could they know how to deal with him. Unfortunately, they didn't get the crucial info.
She kept asking again and again.
But the villagers genuinely didn't know.
Even Earl wasn't very clear about Steven's abilities, only knowing he was space-related.
Steven kept his Supernatural ability and weapons and ammo very secret.
Even those close to him weren't sure how many tricks he had up his sleeve, let alone this group of people.
After finishing the meal, Brittany and Zane, seeing they couldn't gather more info, decided to leave Cox Village.
Gavin, still hopeful, wanted Brittany to help him get a position. After all, a lieutenant was a big deal in his eyes.
Brittany smiled and agreed. "From now on, you'll be in charge of Cox Town! If you find any useful info, remember to report it to me promptly."
Gavin was overjoyed. "Yes, Lieutenant Perez. I'll give it my all! Please trust me!"
As they were leaving, Gavin gave them a lot of stuff.
Brittany didn't care for most of it but kept a few bottles of good wine.
The two left Cox Village.
Brittany took out her device and reported the situation of Cox Town to West Mountain Base.
Brittany: [We discovered a large village, Cox Town, with about 2,000 survivors and a large stockpile of food.]
Brittany: [No Psychics found.]
After finishing the report, Brittany put away her device.
Zane, who was on guard, asked, "Why did you lie to those people in the village?"
Zane didn't get it; almost nothing Brittany said to Gavin was true, like the snow disaster ending soon or helping Cox Village with post-disaster reconstruction.
Everyone knew that no one could predict when the snow disaster would end, not even the top officials at West Mountain Base.
Brittany glanced at Zane and smiled indifferently. "If we told them the truth, do you think we would still be treated as honored guests, well-fed and well-treated, and that they would provide us with information honestly?"
Zane scratched his head. "I get the logic. But it still feels wrong! Those villagers were pretty good to us."
Brittany smiled knowingly. "That's why you can only be my subordinate."
Zane helplessly shook his head.
As an elite soldier, he was indeed not as adept at dealing with people as Brittany.
Brittany nonchalantly said, "What I said is what they really want to hear. They won't resent me; they'll be grateful that I gave them hope."
Zane asked, puzzled, "But they'll eventually find out you lied. What will you do then?"
"By then, I'll have new rhetoric." Brittany had a confident look.
"If we represent the authorities to them, then whatever we say will be justified," she added.
Zane's eyes showed some confusion.
'But can we represent the authorities?' he thought.
West Mountain Base had experienced a power shift, with leadership moving from the official level to Peter Martin, who controlled the troops.
Strictly speaking, they were rebels.
But in such chaotic times, it was hard to distinguish right from wrong.
Zane only knew that he was a soldier, and a soldier's duty was to obey orders.
He shook his head, deciding not to think about these complicated matters anymore.
Brittany didn't care what Zane thought. She was the commander of this search mission, and Zane was just an assistant.
"Next, let's go see that Steven!" She brushed her hair back, her eyes filled with curiosity.
She went on, "According to the villagers of Cox Village, this guy is quite unusual and likely a Psychic!"
Zane smiled happily, "If we can bring him back, it will be a great achievement for us!"
A meaningful smile appeared on Brittany's lips. "Compared to him, the higher-ups are more interested in something else."
No one knew if Steven was a Psychic.
But the intelligence given to her clearly instructed: [Investigate his involvement in the Walmart warehouse theft.]
Initially, the higher-ups at West Mountain Base didn't pay much attention to Steven.
But after hearing the villagers' description, Brittany thought it wasn't that simple.
Perhaps through Steven, she could find the stolen goods from the largest warehouse in the South!
Excitement flashed in Brittany's eyes. "If I can find those things, the huge credit will be enough to make me the second most important person at the base! Maybe even..."
