Chapter 444 The Swarm of Rats

After gathering enough seawater, Steven called it a day.

"Alright, folks, let's head back. We've got most of the prep work done! Once we're back, we'll figure out how to let this seawater settle and cut down its salinity," he told the group.

"Already?" Earl and Henry groaned as they got up, clearly not ready to leave.

Even Lily looked a bit bummed out. They hadn't seen such beautiful scenery in ages.

"If things get colder and the climate goes nuts, the ocean might be the last place on Earth where life can hang on," Earl mused. "Steven, how about we build a beach house here someday?"

Steven thought it over and liked the idea. But first, he had to make sure they were all safe.

"Who knows, maybe by then, Silverlake Base will be overrun by zombies. We could take over their base, snag their ship, and sail away," Steven joked, laughing heartily.

His laughter echoed across the icy landscape, and everyone perked up at the thought. Sailing the open sea sounded way better than being cooped up in a shelter.

Seeing their excitement, Steven grinned and shrugged. "For now, let's tackle the problems right in front of us. But yeah, I've got my eye on that ship at Silverlake Base."

Steven's plan had a long-term angle. If the temperature rose and glaciers melted, coastal cities would flood. A big, sturdy ship would be essential.

They left the beach, chatting and laughing, and drove off.

None of them noticed the massive shadow swimming just beneath the ice where they had been standing. It was so huge that it went unnoticed.

Who knows what terrifying creatures lurk in the vast ocean, especially in this era of global mutation?

Always respect nature, always.

By the time they got back to the shelter, it was late. But Steven didn't waste any time. He skipped dinner and went straight to find Aubrey.

"I've got the seawater. Now we need to let it settle. Are your materials ready?" he asked.

Aubrey nodded. "Yep, it's pretty simple stuff." She showed him hundreds of plastic buckets in her workshop.

"These are coagulants. You add them to the seawater to make the salt settle quickly. To freeze the seawater fast, you need to get rid of a lot of salt first. Only when the salinity is low can it freeze quickly at low temperatures. And when you're ready, I'll give you more coagulants to speed up the freezing process."

Steven nodded. "So, how long will it take for the seawater to settle?"

Aubrey thought for a moment. "At least two days."

"Alright, we can wait two days," Steven agreed.

Over the next two days, the zombie attacks got crazier and crazier.

It seemed like Steven's last attack had really pissed off the zombie king.

But this time, the Bronze Elite Zombie didn't show up. Instead, a massive horde of regular zombies surrounded Steven's shelter.

From this, Steven figured that Bronze Elite Zombies were pretty rare, and the zombie king knew they couldn't be wasted like the regular ones.

But the real problem for Steven and his crew wasn't the zombie horde. It was the sudden appearance of a massive rat swarm from the subway!

That morning, Steven was jolted awake by the shelter's AI system, Aurora, blaring an urgent alert.

"Alert! Alert! The shelter is under attack! Current damage level: 0.00001%! The attack is ongoing, please address the damage immediately!"

What? Under attack again? Steven thought it was just the zombies, and he wasn't too worried. Their attacks couldn't really harm the shelter. He got out of bed and quickly walked to the window.

That's when he saw it—countless claws clinging to the shelter, completely covering the floor-to-ceiling window. Steven squinted and finally recognized them. They were giant rats from the subway!

These rats had never shown up before, but maybe because Steven and his team had killed so many of their kind, they were now pissed off and joining the zombie attack. The noise was deafening, making Steven's ears hurt.

These giant rats didn't have any special powers, but their teeth were insanely sharp, even able to bite through the base's combat suits.

So, when they surrounded the shelter, they did some real damage to its defenses.

Steven felt a headache coming on. With so many rats, even if they couldn't break through the shelter right away, they'd eventually gnaw a big hole in it. Even if they didn't get in, they'd leave the outer walls full of holes.

"Shit, these rats too?" Steven muttered.

Through the external cameras, he saw countless rats swarming the shelter. It would be tough to even open the door and go outside.

Steven wasn't the only one stressed out. His door was suddenly pounded on, and Elinor and the other women were screaming in fear of the giant rats.

Just then, Fluffy, who had just woken up, stretched and transformed into its giant form. It squinted at the countless giant rats outside and suddenly let out a deafening roar!

Fluffy's roar was nothing like its usual cute meow. It was like the roar of a king of beasts, penetrating the glass and causing many rats outside to fall off.

Soon, a large number of rats clinging to the wall fell off, landing in heaps on the ground.

Steven looked at Fluffy with relief. "Your rat-clearing skills are really something!"

A hint of pride flashed in Fluffy's eyes, and it raised its tail high.

Although these rats were a pain, they weren't unbeatable. Steven immediately called Earl, Henry, and Lily to go out and deal with the rats together.
