Chapter 256 High in Protein
Lily was quietly checking out everything in the lab.
The first thing that grabbed her attention was this huge machine, taking up like a quarter of the lab, with a long pipe and a bunch of other parts.
Maybe because it was nighttime, there weren't many people around.
The workers who had brought in the corpse were now just chilling, chatting on the side, and one of them even pulled out a game console to play!
The vibe was super relaxed.
Everyone was doing their own thing, and no one noticed Lily acting all weird.
Two guys carried the strange corpse over, opened up a machine that looked like a cremator, and tossed the body in.
There was a loud noise.
Soon enough, this thick, milky white liquid started flowing out from a big pipe on the side.
Below it was a large iron barrel collecting all the milky white stuff.
Seeing it, Lily's stomach did a flip! That milky white slime looked exactly like the white paste she had eaten on her first day here!
Did that mean what she ate that day was actually...
Lily desperately covered her mouth, trying hard not to puke.
She felt like her whole worldview had just been shattered!
She had thought the West Mountain Base was a safe haven in this messed-up world.
But it turned out to be a nightmare!
They were actually turning dead bodies into food for people to eat!
Well, to be precise, it was only for the people of The Fourth Life Warehouse.
The First to Third Life Warehouses got normal food.
A few workers walked over and started dividing the white goo into several parts.
Then they added some other stuff to it.
"Do we still have banana-flavored additives?"
"Yeah, but not much. Let's ask the lab to make more later!"
"This white paste is high in protein and super nutritious. It's actually great for energy, even though the process is pretty messed up."
"Who knows, one day you might die and end up in someone else's stomach."
"That wouldn't be so bad; at least it saves on burial. It would be a contribution to the base, right?"
The workers chatted and laughed, looking totally chill, like they weren't handling human corpses but livestock.
Lily's face twisted in horror.
Now she was sure her missing students had been disposed of this way too.
Her hatred for the West Mountain organization surged!
She wondered, 'But why did they kill my students? Is the food shortage at West Mountain Base that bad? Isn't young labor more valuable to them?'
Lily still had questions she couldn't figure out.
Just then, the door to the next room suddenly opened.
A tall guy struggled to carry a wooden box out.
He came over to the machine and opened the lid of the box.
A whole box of densely packed, black, crawling things appeared before Lily's eyes.
Lily almost screamed! The box was full of cockroaches!
The guy casually dumped the cockroaches into the machine.
Just like with the corpse earlier, the machine took everything in.
A few cockroaches escaped and crawled to Lily's feet, making her jump back in fright.
Before long, another big batch of that white protein food was churned out.
Lily couldn't hold back anymore and felt the urge to puke.
Sure, she knew cockroaches were high in protein, but seeing them turned into meals was just too much.
Trying to keep it together, Lily quietly slipped into the next room to take a peek.
What she saw next would haunt her forever.
In a large, warm room, there were countless wooden boxes, all filled with big, crawling cockroaches!
Lily's throat made weird noises, and she felt her stomach contents rising.
She quickly left the lab and rushed to the restroom.
The other workers saw her and laughed.
"She's been here so long and still can't handle it!"
"No surprise, women naturally hate cockroaches."
"From now on, let's keep women out of that room; they can help with the machines instead."
Lily made it to the restroom, ripped off her protective suit, and started vomiting violently into the sink.
It wasn't until she had emptied her stomach that she felt a bit better.
She thought, 'If I had known it would be like this, I would've stayed at Innovation Academy! At least that monster just eats people; that's something I could handle. But this place is a nightmare!'
Lily felt utterly hopeless.
She couldn't even take her students and leave now.
'I can't stay here any longer! I have to find a way out. But if I leave, where can we go?' she wondered.
Lily felt completely lost. She could only pretend she hadn't seen anything, keep a low profile, and wait for the right moment.
After a while, she walked out of the restroom.
In the restroom, Lily also helped the female worker she had knocked out back into her protective suit.
Lily had acted so quickly that the worker hadn't noticed.
Maybe when she woke up, she'd just think she fainted from exhaustion.
After all, living underground and working in such an environment could easily cause health issues.
Even if she had suspicions, she had no proof to blame Lily.
At West Mountain Base, after some arrangements by Charles, a thirty-person special ops team set out.
The two leaders, though not natural Psychics, were well-trained warriors.
One was named Shawn Cooper, the other Yosef Phillips, both soldiers Charles had personally trained.
The two led the team, traveling by sled to the source of Zane's signal.
After several hours of trekking, they finally reached the battlefield.
It was already past ten in the morning, ten hours since Zane's distress call.
By this time, Steven had already cleaned up the place.
There was no trace of Brittany and Zane's bodies, not even a drop of blood.
Before leaving, Steven had Fluffy roll around to erase most of the traces. And due to internal issues at their base that caused some delays, with the snow falling continuously, it became exceptionally difficult for them to find any signs of battle at the scene.
The group couldn't use professional equipment, but the sled dogs they brought had keen noses and smelled blood, barking wildly at one spot.
