Chapter 485 A Peaceful Night
Steven's right hand lit up with the Dragon roar as he fired up his Supernatural ability, cranking up his speed and reflexes by eight times!
After tons of private training with Lily, Steven's close combat game had seriously leveled up, especially with a solid weapon and a killer Supernatural ability.
Even in tight spots, he could react super fast when facing enemies.
Steven moved forward, step by step, and found the office door blocked by vines.
He thought for a sec and decided not to hack through them. Instead, he used his knife to cut a hole in the wall and crawled out.
But once he got outside, he was floored—The whole center of the building had been hollowed out into a massive pit!
The corridor beneath his feet was mostly trashed, leaving just enough space for one person to walk.
But in the next moment, Steven had no time to worry about the floor.
A gigantic dark red plant appeared in his sight, rising from the deepest part of the building, piercing through the ceiling all the way to the top floor!
'Is this thing the World Tree?' Steven thought of a type of giant plant he had read about.
Clearly, the plant in front of him was not that.
Sure, there had been trees bigger than this in the world before, but Steven knew this massive plant had definitely mutated and grown to this size in just a few months!
The weirdest part was that it was entirely blood-red, with a rhythmic movement like it was breathing.
Beneath the black bark, patterns appeared as red as human flesh and blood.
It seemed less like a tree and more like a living person.
Steven couldn't help but swallow hard. He didn't know if this mutated plant was aggressive, so he cautiously stayed quiet.
Then, he carefully scoped out his surroundings.
The whole building was covered in vines and branches, with tons of fist-sized red fruits hanging from them.
The leaves curled into ellipsoid shapes, hanging from the walls and ceiling like insect eggs, with who-knows-what inside.
The scene before him was filled with mystery, making the environment super creepy.
Steven took several deep breaths to calm himself down, trying to figure this situation out.
No doubt, he had stumbled upon a huge secret of the Snowfall Cult.
So, he had a choice to make.
Should he act like nothing happened and bail, or should he grab some fruits and branches and crack open one of those giant egg-like things to take a closer look?
It was a tough call.
If he got caught, the Snowfall Cult members might go all out to take him down.
But now, would the Snowfall Cult dare to fight him at such a critical moment?
Steven pondered for a long time and ultimately didn't want to miss this chance.
So he walked over and picked two red fruits from the branches.
While picking them, he kept an eye on the giant plant's reaction.
Seeing no weirdness, Steven felt a bit relieved. He then cut off some branches and took a few leaves.
Nothing unusual happened, and Steven looked up at the densely packed cocoon-like ellipsoid objects hanging on the wall.
'Could there be some big bugs inside?' Steven was honestly a bit freaked out.
Gritting his teeth, Steven decided to grab one of the ellipsoid objects to check it out.
He walked along the busted corridor to a cocoon, sliced its branch with his knife, and stashed it in his extradimensional space.
After that, he didn't waste any time and quickly activated the Double Dimension Door to get out of the abandoned building.
He didn't rush to study the stuff he had grabbed since he wasn't exactly an expert in that field.
So, Steven headed back to his car, pretending to rest, but he didn't catch a wink all night.
Time ticked by, and the next day rolled around. Steven kept a close eye on the Snowfall Cult's activities, fearing someone might have noticed his little adventure.
But everything seemed normal with the Snowfall Cult, no signs of anything out of the ordinary.
Steven felt a bit relieved.
He figured his actions would be tough to spot.
After all, in the whole Starlight City, he had only come across one spatial Psychic, and he had taken care of them.
The Snowfall Cult members were guarding the abandoned building tightly, not expecting anyone to sneak in.
Steven relaxed and, acting like nothing had happened, went up the building to continue his guard duty.
But throughout the day, not a single zombie showed up around the Snowfall Cult, which was super weird, completely different from their initial thought—a big zombie attack.
The regular members of the Snowfall Cult thought this was a good thing. They believed that the zombies were scared of the human army protecting them and didn't dare to come close, and that a stable life was just around the corner.
But for Otha and the leaders of the various factions, this was bad news.
Because the zombies' current inactivity could only mean they had sensed the humans' plans and were up to something.
That night, everyone gathered again behind the church to talk about the situation.
"The zombie horde suddenly stopped moving. Either they retreated, or they sensed our actions and are secretly planning something," Steven said.
"Now, I have to consider that the Zombie King's intelligence might be way higher than we thought."
Megan frowned and said, annoyed, "The smarts these monsters are showing are too high! I'd believe it if someone said humans were guiding them."
"If they never show up, are we supposed to stay here forever?"
Otha crossed his arms and calmly asked, "Do you have any news from your respective bases?"
Everyone shook their heads.
"No, the bases are unusually quiet. Although our people have gone underground, there are still monitors on the surface. But no zombie hordes have been detected."
Steven suddenly thought of something and looked at Otha. "Could it be because you killed a Zombie King?"
The existence of a Zombie King was clearly special; it could be considered the core of a zombie horde.
Once a Zombie King died, the horde centered around it would lose order.
And now it could be confirmed that there was more than one intelligent Zombie King in Starlight City.
Maybe they had some special connection, and the death of a Zombie King might have tipped off the others.
