Chapter 260 Repelling the Enemy
Yosef's plan got the thumbs-up from everyone.
No way they could keep going against Steven.
The power gap between them and Steven was just too huge. Fighting him was basically a death wish. All they could do was run and wait for backup.
Shawn quickly decided to blow holes in the walls along their escape route and get out through those.
Steven was chilling by the window, already guessing how they planned to make their getaway.
But he wasn't about to leave his safe spot to chase them.
In the group of soldiers, only two were artificial Psychics like Zane.
But their skills were pretty meh, nowhere near a real Psychic.
As long as Steven stayed inside, they couldn't touch him.
But if he went out, those well-trained soldiers might take him down.
His Dimension Door could only open one way, which was a bit of a problem.
"Get some muscle, if you think it'll make a difference. Only when I've taken out enough of you will you finally back off!" Steven said, cool as a cucumber.
To end this mess, he had to fight fire with fire. He had no illusions about the enemy.
Explosions went off one after another. Before long, Shawn and Yosef led their battered group out of Emerald Estate.
Once he was sure they were gone, Steven stepped out of the shelter.
Time to clean up the battlefield.
These soldiers were just a temporary rescue team, so they only had light weapons, no heavy stuff.
But Steven didn't care; he stripped the dead of all their gear.
One weapon caught his eye, that heavy sniper rifle he'd been wanting.
This beast of a gun could rip through small tank armor with just its raw power.
And with Steven's Supernatural ability, it could even punch through heavy armor!
After cleaning up, Steven didn't bother with the bodies.
In the past, he might've buried them.
But now, leaving them out might actually help.
Steven knew the folks from West Mountain Base wouldn't let this slide.
They'd lost a natural Psychic and a bunch of regular soldiers in two fights with him. They'd definitely be back for revenge.
Leaving the bodies on the road would mess with the enemy's morale.
And if they came to collect the bodies, they'd be easy targets for Steven.
After tidying up, Steven headed back to the shelter.
The women at home were all waiting for him.
They looked at Steven like he was their guardian angel.
They all knew that without Steven, surviving in this post-apocalyptic world would be nearly impossible. Especially after such a close call.
"Steven, it's so good to have you here!" Nora said, rushing over to hug him, her chest pressing against him.
She'd been scared out of her mind during the gunfire.
After all, it was a real army attacking, not just some farmers from Cox Village.
She'd been hiding in the basement, terrified the shelter would be breached.
Steven gently patted her butt. "You're scared out of your mind! Don't worry, nothing's gonna happen."
Elinor, a bit jealous, pulled Nora away. "Come on, you look absolutely petrified!"
The genius girl Cindy, sitting in a wheelchair, chimed in, "But judging by the strength of the troops this time, it doesn't seem like they were ready for a full-on attack here."
She went on, "Their weapons were pretty light—just a heavy sniper rifle, some grenades, and small bombs. If that's all they've got, it's not too bad. But I'm worried these guys were just the scouts."
Cindy frowned, clearly concerned. "No matter how tough this shelter is, if we face a fully equipped professional army, it's gonna be hard to hold them off."
Cindy's sharp mind quickly zeroed in on the main issue.
Steven nodded. "You're right. This team wasn't that strong. I think they were just here to scout. After all, I did take out two of their people."
He continued, "And they probably didn't expect a regular villa to have such a solid shelter. Next time they come, their firepower will be way stronger!"
Elinor asked, worried, "Can we hold them off then? The army has professional demolition gear, and we're mostly on defense. We don't have many offensive options."
Having been with Steven for a while, everyone had learned to stay alert. Steven was pretty pleased with that.
"If they keep sending more soldiers and firepower, breaking through this shelter is just a matter of time. But it'll take them a while," Steven said with a casual smile, like he wasn't worried at all.
The shelter was super sturdy. Even if the city got hit by a nuke, as long as the shelter wasn't at ground zero, it wouldn't be completely destroyed.
A key point was its multi-layered structure.
Steven glanced around the shelter.
Two stories above ground, and three stories below.
The core part of the shelter was actually underground!
The two above-ground levels were for comfort, so they weren't as fortified.
If the above-ground part got breached, Steven could move straight underground.
And the three underground levels were at least twice as tough as the above-ground ones!
Besides the special alloy on the surface, the whole structure was reinforced with tons of steel and concrete.
According to the manual, forget about a lot of explosives; even a direct hit from an air-to-ground missile couldn't penetrate it!
Steven explained, "There's no fortress in the world that can't be breached. But for them to break through the two above-ground levels, they'll have to pay a huge price in time and lives."
"Once the above-ground part is breached, we'll abandon it and move underground," he added.
Steven spread his hands and smiled. "We might not see the sunlight anymore, but it's fine. The underground facilities are top-notch. You don't need to worry about the quality of life!"
After Steven's explanation, everyone finally felt more at ease.
"So that's how it is! I knew it. This shelter, claimed to be the world's most expensive, couldn't be that simple." Aubrey laughed, showing off her perfect teeth.
Steven walked over and lightly tapped her head. "Don't celebrate just yet."
Steven squinted and said, "Abandoning the two above-ground levels is just a backup plan. I won't do it unless I have to."
He continued, "If they want to attack my house, they're gonna pay for it! Get those explosives ready for me ASAP. I want them to feel some real pain!"
