Chapter 493 The End of This Battle

Just when Steven was about to throw in the towel and plan a getaway with his crew, something weird happened on the battlefield.

All the zombies just froze in place, like someone hit the pause button. They didn't even bother attacking the folks right in front of them.

The next moment, they all turned around and bolted back the way they came. It didn't matter if they were Bronze Flying Elite Zombies, Bronze Elite Zombies, or just regular ones.

They ignored the humans they were so close to wiping out, even though a few more attacks would've let them take over the biggest human stronghold in Starlight City!

But nope, they didn't think twice. They just spun around and ran like their lives depended on it.

When they showed up, it was like a tidal wave, but now they were retreating like an avalanche!

There was no order to it; every zombie was just running back, making these urgent, freaky noises, like they had something way more important to deal with.

Megan saw this and her face lit up with joy.

She'd seen this exact thing happen a few days ago!

"Otha and the others must've found the Zombie Kings! These things are going back to save them!"

The Zombie Kings, being the big boss, could control all the zombies. So when they were in deep trouble, it called all the zombies to come to the rescue, no matter what!

This reaction on the battlefield could only mean one thing: Otha and his team had found the Zombie Kings and were giving it a hard time, forcing it to call back its army.

Everyone was exhausted, except for Steven, who was still pretty chill.

They'd almost become zombie chow just a moment ago.

After the zombie wave pulled back, the rat swarm was a bit slower to react, but since they had a symbiotic relationship with the zombies, they turned around and left too.

No one dared to chase them; everyone was on edge, scared the zombies might turn around and attack again.

But as the zombie horde moved further away, becoming a thin black line on the horizon, everyone finally dared to breathe easy.

"Haha!"

"Am I... still alive? Am I still alive? Or am I dead?"

Throughout the Snowfall Cult camp, you could hear heavy breathing, crying, and laughing everywhere.

The relief of surviving was overwhelming. Even the battle-hardened folks had never faced such a desperate fight.

They could handle being killed by people, but the thought of being eaten alive by zombies and giant rats was too much.

Megan, though, kept her cool and told everyone, "We can't relax yet!"

"Everyone can sit down and rest, but stay ready for battle. There might still be some zombies and giant rats lurking around."

With Megan's reminder, the other groups also started to rest.

Everyone was still scared, not daring to fully relax even while resting.

Steven noticed a lot of soldiers had this blank look in their eyes.

Tonight's battle would definitely leave a mark on them for life.

PTSD was a given.

He hoped they wouldn't be haunted by nightmares of the zombie horde.

Elinor hugged Steven tightly, finally taking deep breaths, and he could clearly feel her chest rising and falling rapidly.

Lily, Henry, and Earl, along with Fluffy, gathered around Steven.

They remembered Steven's advice: help out, but save energy for a quick escape if needed.

So none of them were hurt.

Henry had messed around with a Bronze Elite Zombie a bit, but his thick skin and strong healing ability kept him safe.

After what felt like forever, but might've just been a few minutes, every second dragged on for everyone.

Steven scanned the battlefield; the initial group of warriors left to defend had suffered over 80% casualties.

Starlight City was a wreck after this fight, especially in terms of combat power, the losses were brutal.

But for Steven, it wasn't all bad news. At least his team made it through without any casualties.

The Snowfall Cult had suffered the most.

The battle happened right in their backyard.

Even the crying had died down. Out of about five thousand cult members, less than a thousand were left.

No, maybe not even five hundred!

Neil and the other high-ranking members of the Snowfall Cult looked grim.

Everyone was still in their defensive positions outside.

But no one said a single word.

Right now, no words could capture what everyone was feeling.

After a battle like this, with so many losses, basic human emotions like joy, anger, sorrow, and happiness just seemed to vanish.

Steven looked around, his face blank.

Suddenly, Elinor's voice broke through his thoughts. "Steven, are you hurt? Do you need me to check you out?"

Steven glanced at the gentle doctor beside him, unable to muster a smile, and just said, "No."

Elinor checked on everyone else, and they were all okay.

She tightened the strap of her medical kit and asked Steven, "Can I go check on their injuries?"

She meant the survivors on the battlefield.

A lot of people were alive but had all sorts of injuries.

Steven didn't say no. Right now, they were all on the same side.

And after this battle, the major forces in Starlight City would struggle to regroup, let alone pose a threat to them.

They might even form an alliance to tackle future crises.

Elinor, carrying her medical kit, moved through the battlefield, bandaging wounds and giving out meds.

Her serious demeanor and gentle, skilled hands made many numb soldiers break down and cry.

They felt the warmth of humanity in Elinor, which made them feel alive, not like they were stuck in hell.

Gradually, everyone started gathering supplies—Food, medicine, bandages, blankets.

No one dared to sleep yet, but it was pretty clear the zombie horde wasn't coming back, so the wounded needed to rest first.

Natasha led the survivors from the church out.

They'd been well protected during the battle. Despite a few minor incidents, no one was hurt or killed.

Natasha looked at everyone with compassion and then told the survivors, "Go help take care of them! They are all great warriors."

Knowing their survival wasn't easy and depended on the desperate fight of the frontline warriors, those who could still move eagerly went to help the wounded, including Chase and his wife, and Clio.

Delbert, on the other hand, had been in poor health since that incident and hadn't recovered, so he stayed in the church.

Chase looked at the battlefield, feeling deeply pained.

Most of the neighbors he brought to the Snowfall Cult had died in the repeated zombie attacks.

His face showed a look of guilt.

Dione comforted him, "Don't be too sad. You did your best. In times like these, we can only survive day by day. It's not your fault."

Chase sighed deeply and went to help carry stretchers for the wounded.

And the young girl Clio was also active on the battlefield, bandaging the wounded and bringing them hot water to keep them warm.
