Chapter 521 Explosion!
"The situation outside can't hold for long. You need to get out immediately!" Steven called to Otha.
"I understand!" Otha knew this advantage was only temporary. They were already prepared for the breakout.
The shelter still housed over a thousand people, mostly workers from the refinery and their families. But this breakout couldn't include them—they would have to be left behind.
If Otha's group won, these people could survive. If they lost, these people would have to live underground forever—still better than going outside now and being devoured by the horde.
"Prepare for breakout. Pour all firepower outward!" Otha commanded.
Megan gritted her teeth and stepped forward. "We only have one chance. Since we're seeking thrills, let's go all the way!" She walked to the control panel, opened a hidden compartment, found a deeply concealed button, and slammed her fist down on it!
The next moment, the massive refinery above Emberwick Base shelter erupted in an earth-shattering blaze!
Dazzling light illuminated the entire sky, the red glow painful to the eyes, and the deafening sound made Steven feel like he might go deaf. A mushroom-shaped cloud slowly rose from the ground!
The entire earth trembled. Even miles away, the vibrations felt like a magnitude nine earthquake, making Steven's group struggle to stand.
"My God!" Leonard's eyes widened as he stared in disbelief. "Megan actually detonated the refinery!!"
The refinery reportedly stored millions of barrels of crude oil—the foundation of Megan's dominance in Starlight City. But now, Megan had blown it all up!
Terrifying hot winds swept across the area, incinerating at least seventy or eighty thousand zombies into ash or charred remains.
Steven's group was fortunately wearing heat-resistant combat gear, otherwise he felt they would have been severely burned.
"She's really ruthless!" Steven couldn't help but exclaim. Megan was cruel to others, but even crueler to herself! Although this approach was the wisest option right now, not everyone had such resolve.
The explosion hadn't ended. After the first blast, a series of explosions followed. Massive waves of fire swept across the surroundings, melting the frozen river back into a lake. The surrounding snow and ice on the ground also melted.
The river boiled, and zombies were carried away by the current, emitting miserable howls from their throats. The virus inside them couldn't withstand high temperatures and rapidly deactivated and died.
Steven's group quickly retreated—the explosion's shockwave was too strong to approach. A full fifteen minutes passed before the explosions diminished, but the flames still burned fiercely.
The surroundings had become a vast boiling wetland! This blast directly and indirectly destroyed over half the horde's numbers!
Otha and the investigation team were stunned. None of them had expected Megan to have such a move. Their hearts filled with newfound respect for this Emberwick Base leader.
Not just respect, but fear. If someone could be this ruthless to themselves, what about to others?
Megan's eyes flashed with manic light. In one stroke, she had destroyed all the crude oil stored in the oil depot!
However, what others didn't know was that Emberwick Base had more than one oil depot. She had another five hundred thousand barrels of crude oil hidden elsewhere.
Without this backup, how could she so easily destroy Emberwick Base's foundation? This move was like cutting off a limb to survive—something that had to be done to seek a way out!
"Let's go. We need to get out quickly. We only have a chance while the horde is in chaos," Megan put on her helmet and walked toward the shelter's main gate.
"But outside is a vast expanse of water now. How do we leave?" Eris asked from behind. "If we swim across, we'll be targets for those Bronze Flying Elite Zombies!"
Megan gritted her teeth. "No matter how dangerous, we have to try! This is our best opportunity."
No one had anticipated the outside turning into a wetland. But even if they had, they still had to proceed.
Rolf, the investigation team's explosives expert and mechanic, stepped forward. "We can assemble a temporary speedboat to rush across!"
"Is it feasible? We don't have much time," Byron quickly asked.
"I need a vehicle, preferably a truck," Rolf spoke rapidly but calmly.
"We have one!" Byron confirmed.
"Good, find me some people who understand mechanics to help!" Rolf instructed.
Otha looked at his watch, then at the situation outside. "You need to complete this task within fifteen minutes," he told Rolf.
Although the explosion had destroyed half the horde, the zombies covered too large an area on the snow plain.
This meant a large ring of zombies on the outskirts were less affected. And zombies from the water were slowly crawling ashore. Before long, they would surround the lake around Emberwick Base. By then, escape wouldn't be so easy.
"I'll finish it in ten minutes at most!" Rolf simply rolled up his sleeves, speaking casually as he walked quickly to the back.
Steven's voice reached Otha's ear. "How's it going? Can you get out?"
He looked from afar—the zombies hadn't given up their siege of the shelter. Hundreds of giant Bronze Flying Elite Zombies flapped their wings, circling above the lake, emitting piercing screams from their mouths.
The refinery fire continued to burn, with occasional explosions. Although the explosions weren't as terrifying as at first, judging by the current fire intensity, it would take at least ten to fifteen days to extinguish.
"We're coming out right away," Otha said to Steven. "Your marksmanship is excellent. Help me snipe those flying monsters!"
Steven sighed lightly. "That will expose my position! But for the sake of our friendship, I'll do it!"
Otha was an extremely important part of Steven's plan. So of course Steven had to help him.
As for attracting the horde's attention, that was manageable. The flames and explosions over there continued, making extremely loud noises that had already attracted most of the horde's attention.
Even if some zombies came toward them here, Steven was confident he could eliminate them all.
Otha nodded. "Good."
Steven took out his anti-materiel sniper rifle from his extradimensional space.
This heavy baby gave him a sense of reliability.
Combined with Steven's [Precision Shooting] ability and special armor-piercing bullets, you didn't need to worry about insufficient firepower.
