Chapter 242 The Chase

Fluffy's meowing jolted Steven awake.

Ever since Fluffy moved in, the cat had a habit of sneaking into Steven's room every night, curling up at the head of his bed.

Steven enjoyed petting Fluffy, so he never shooed it away.

But this particular meow was so jarring, it nearly scared Steven out of his skin.

He opened his eyes to see Fluffy staring intently at the door, fur all puffed up.

As a former stray, Fluffy was usually super alert and didn't act like this.

Steven knew something was off.

He rolled out of bed, instinctively grabbing his gun.

"Fluffy, what's up?" Steven asked.

Fluffy was incredibly intelligent. It understood everything Steven said, but the problem was—it couldn't talk back!

Fluffy just kept staring at the door, meowing.

After a few more meows, it suddenly stopped, looking confused and glancing around.

"What's going on?" Steven muttered, puzzled.

'Did it have a nightmare? But do cats even have nightmares?' he wondered.

Still uneasy, Steven grabbed his phone to check the shelter's surveillance.

Nothing seemed out of the ordinary.

But Fluffy walked to the door, pawing at it, wanting to go out.

"Hold on!" Steven quickly got dressed, then opened the door, gun in hand.

Fluffy darted towards the stairs.

Steven looked around cautiously, then followed quietly.

Fluffy reached the first floor, sniffing around and making weird noises.

Then, it jumped onto the living room table.

Steven followed, step by step.

That's when he noticed the black military knife on the table.

His eyes widened, and sweat beaded on his forehead.

That knife definitely wasn't his, and no one else in the shelter had anything like it.

So who put it there?

Even scarier, who could get past the shelter's supposedly impenetrable defenses and leave it in the living room?

If someone could sneak in without a sound, did that mean they could take his life one day?

Steven swallowed hard but quickly pulled himself together.

The house was full of surveillance cameras; he just needed to check who had come in.

He went to the TV and told the smart system, "Replay the living room footage from 10 minutes ago, then fast forward to when someone shows up!"

Soon, the screen showed the footage from ten minutes ago.

As the video fast-forwarded, Steven finally saw a creepy figure.

He slowed down the playback, not daring to blink, afraid he'd miss something.

Then he saw a woman in a white bodysuit slowly emerge from the shadows in the corner of the room.

"Zoom in!" Steven instructed, watching closely.

He saw that she didn't just appear out of nowhere; she walked in through the wall. That solid wall seemed like air, not stopping her at all.

Steven finally got it.

"Such a supernatural ability!" he exclaimed.

Ever since mutated life forms started popping up, nothing seemed to surprise anyone anymore.

Steven kept watching the video. After scoping out the room for a bit, the woman in the white bodysuit was about to head for the stairs when Fluffy's meowing scared her off. She placed a knife on the table and then walked back out through the wall.

Steven felt a dark cloud hanging over him.

Having a psychic like that around was a huge threat!

No matter how strong the shelter was, it wouldn't matter.

And leaving a military knife on the table? That was even more terrifying!

Steven, being a knife expert, knew that kind of knife wasn't something just anyone could get; it was probably a standard military weapon.

If he let that woman go, how much of a threat would she be in the future?

A strong killing intent surged in Steven's eyes.

That woman had to go; he had to take her out!

"Fluffy, let's go hunt down the intruder!" Steven said to Fluffy, who was still on the table.

Fluffy opened its mouth and meowed, its eyes glowing a ghostly blue.

Steven didn't rush out. First, he armed himself in the living room.

Not hearing any engine sounds nearby, Steven figured the intruder hadn't come by car; she couldn't have gone far!

While getting dressed, he pulled up the outside surveillance to track the intruder's movements.

Through the infrared camera, he saw two figures leaving.

"Two people? Whatever, let's take down the woman who can sneak in first!" Steven muttered.

Since they had come to declare war, Steven wasn't going to show any mercy.

With Fluffy by his side, he had enough firepower to handle any opponent.

If he had more time, he would've called Henry and Earl too.

But now, if he delayed, the intruders might get away.

Steven finished gearing up, grabbed his Magnum Sniper Rifle, and headed out with Fluffy.

"Fluffy, can you track their scent?" Steven asked.

Fluffy confidently meowed, as if to say, "Of course!"

In the next moment, its body rapidly expanded, turning into a giant creature dozens of feet long.

Fluffy crouched in front of Steven, signaling for him to get on.

In the snow, it was faster than a snowmobile!

Steven looked at the sharp fur on its back, worriedly saying, "I'm afraid it'll poke my butt."

Fluffy understood and quickly made its back fur soft.

Only then did Steven sit on it with confidence.

"Don't get too excited and suddenly poke my butt!" Steven reminded Fluffy.

Fluffy rolled its eyes, meowing in annoyance at Steven's lack of trust.

Once he was seated, Fluffy's soft paws pushed off the snow, leaping dozens of feet forward!

Steven held the Magnum Sniper Rifle, staring ahead through the tactical scope.

Tonight, no matter what, he couldn't let that woman leave alive!

Steven and Fluffy sped off, quickly disappearing from Emerald Estate, heading northwest.

Meanwhile, Brittany and Zane were happily heading back on a sled.

Their search had yielded tremendous results!

Finding a thriving town and uncovering Steven's secret felt like a double win. Reporting this to the higher-ups would surely be a career-defining achievement!
