Chapter 380 The Messenger

Steven geared up, his mind set on one thing: making a statement in Starlight City.

This fight wasn't just about survival—it was about sending a message. He wanted every faction to think twice before crossing him!

Once he pulled this off, he could finally kick back and live the quiet life he'd been chasing.

Although Lily was anxious, women are emotional creatures.

A little reassurance, and she'd bounce back in no time.

Besides, those students were on borrowed time anyway.

Once they were gone, Lily's fixation would fade, and this whole mess would be history.

For the next day, Lily didn't eat anything.

Elinor was getting antsy. "If she keeps this up, she's gonna wreck herself."

Steven shrugged it off. "She'll survive. People can go three days without food. If she wants to punish herself to feel better, let her. It's her call."

Lily was a martial artist, not that fragile.

She was just using physical pain to alleviate her inner guilt.

Hearing this, Elinor couldn't help but ask with a smile, "Don't you feel sorry for her?"

"Feel sorry? For what?" Steven asked with a smile.

Elinor blinked, "Don't you have any feelings for Lily? Or do you like her?"

Steven smiled faintly. "I admire her. If we can become reliable friends, that would be great. But before that, she has to get through this crisis."

For Steven now, love was just a seasoning in life.

With it, life would have more flavor, but without it, he could still live well on the main course alone.

After being reborn and spending more time in the apocalypse, he became more indifferent to so-called love and affection.

In this world, it's best to be someone who thinks more about themselves to be truly happy.

For Lily, he would give all the support except for actual actions.

He wouldn't easily develop feelings for anyone.

Because once feelings were involved, people would hesitate in their actions.

Now, he could let Lily be his friend, but not his lover.

That afternoon, Steven pulled Henry and Earl aside, telling them to stay sharp and ready to roll at a moment's notice.

The Emberwick Base crew had stumbled onto Cox Town, so it was only a matter of time before they zeroed in on the shelter.

The only thing holding them back was they weren't fully prepped yet—but that wouldn't last long.

Henry's reaction was relatively calm. "Ever since we killed the Psychic from Silverlake Base, I knew this fight was inevitable!"

Earl sighed, "What a hassle! Can't those guys just stay quiet? Isn't it good enough to survive in the apocalypse? Why fight over territory?"

Steven calmly explained, "There's always gonna be power-hungry folks out there. Once survival's checked off, they'll want more. Not everyone's chill like us. And the only way to be 100% safe is to wipe out every threat around. If I spotted even a small armed crew nearby, I'd take 'em down, no question."

Then he grinned and reassured Earl, "But don't sweat it! I've got it all under control. As long as we flex our strength, they won't dare mess with us again."

Steven didn't have deep grudges with the four major forces in Starlight City.

He had only killed one of their Psychics and a few soldiers.

As long as his strength made them wary, the problem could be solved.

Going on the offensive and taking down a whole base was a tall order. But when it came to holding down the shelter, he was rock-solid. No doubt about it.

Henry crossed his arms and laughed, "In any case, we fight! Our good days were earned with our fists. If anyone dares to disturb us, we'll beat them into submission!"

Earl sighed, holding his chubby face. "At this point, we have no choice but to fight!"

They weren't new to battles, so they weren't particularly resistant.

After all, defense was easier than offense, and they had the shelter as their final secure line of defense.

At this moment, a faint engine sound came from outside the shelter.

The three of them immediately became alert.

"Someone's coming!"

"It's a car!"

Steven instinctively jumped up from the sofa and rushed to the second-floor window.

Through the one-way glass, he saw a modified snowmobile on the road outside Emerald Estate.

It felt familiar, similar to the snowmobiles from Emberwick Base he had seen before.

'Folks from Emberwick Base? But why just one vehicle—a scout or a messenger?' Steven thought as he pulled a Magnum Sniper Rifle out of the extradimensional space.

The snowmobile sped towards them, showing no intention of stopping.

As it passed the front of Emerald Estate, a steel crossbow appeared from the window, and a black arrow shot into the ice wall!

After that, the snowmobile quickly sped away.

"Trying to leave?" Steven's lips curled into a cold smile.

He opened the window, set up the Magnum Sniper Rifle, and aimed at the snowmobile's tracks.

A single shot rang out, and 2000 feet away, the tracks exploded, sending the snowmobile careening off the road and sliding straight toward the river.

Steven, rifle in hand, leapt out the window.

The ground was a solid sheet of snow, but as he landed, his spatial ability kicked in, cushioning the impact like he'd just stepped off a curb.

The more he used his powers, the smoother he got. It was like second nature now.

Behind him, Henry and Fluffy quickly followed.

Steven and Henry rode on Fluffy, and with a few leaps, they reached the snowmobile.

When they arrived, they saw two soldiers in flame-embroidered combat suits crawling out.

One had a broken leg, and the other tried to help him.

But seeing Steven and the others, he decisively abandoned his comrade and ran.

Steven raised his gun and shot at his calf.

The soldier's calf was pierced, and he fell to the snow with a scream.

The other soldier tried to draw his gun, but Henry pinned him down by the neck, immobilizing him.

"Doesn't look like a Psychic," Steven muttered, tying up the two soldiers. They were just regular grunts, no powers to speak of.

No way they were here for a fight.

Steven didn't bother wasting a bullet on them—hostages could be useful for intel.

But these two were hardcore. Knowing they were toast, they bit down, their faces turning ghostly pale as black blood spilled from their mouths. Dead in seconds.

"Suicide?" Steven frowned.

Henry checked their jaws and said, "They've got poison capsules in their teeth—standard for scouts to avoid capture and spill intel."

Steven nodded, "Smart move."

Even if Steven promised to let them live, he'd still take them out after squeezing out what he needed.

These guys weren't fooling themselves.

"But now they're dead, and I've got no clue why they're here," Steven sighed.

At this moment, Earl came running, panting.

He held a black crossbow bolt with a white cloth tied to it.

"Captain, they left something! Take a look."

Steven's eyes narrowed. "Freeze, Earl! Don't move!"
