Chapter 437 Shadow
The flamethrower kept blasting out waves of fire, lighting up the tunnel and turning the zombies in their path into nothing but ashes.
The horde of zombies backed off, totally helpless against Steven's powers.
But Steven wasn't exactly thrilled.
Taking out these regular zombies didn't give him any sense of achievement.
He was after the Zombie King, the one pulling the strings behind the scenes!
As long as the Zombie King was around, it could keep churning out more zombies.
But all this noise had probably tipped off the Zombie King, making it tougher to track it down.
Still, Steven was here, and he wasn't about to back down.
Using the Dimension Door's defensive powers, Steven led his crew through the chaos.
Fluffy and Lily didn't even get a chance to jump in.
But Lily kept glancing over her shoulder.
She warned Steven, "Those giant rats are still on our tail!"
Damn sewer rats, they could squeeze into every crack and crevice.
There were probably more of them than zombies, making them impossible to wipe out completely.
Steven said firmly, "Forget about them for now! We need to find the Zombie King's hideout and take it down to end this once and for all!"
Lily replied, "But we're moving too slow!"
The tunnel was packed with zombies.
Looking ahead, it was just a sea of moving heads.
At this rate, who knew how long it would take to burn through them all.
Steven, however, said, "It's fine, we'll just keep pushing forward! We've got plenty of supplies and supernatural ability food; we can outlast them."
Lily's eyes widened, realizing Steven had planned for a long haul.
She hadn't thought about that at all.
"A long fight in the tunnel?" Lily thought Steven's plan was a bit risky.
It wasn't like him to take such chances.
The deeper they went, the harder it would be to escape if things went south.
But Steven's confident look made Lily hold her tongue.
She gripped her broadsword tightly, sticking close to Steven's left.
As a top-notch melee fighter, she made sure no enemy could sneak up on Steven.
Another half hour passed, and they lost count of how many zombies they'd taken down.
The zombies didn't stand a chance.
And Steven kept the Dimension Door up without breaking a sweat, not even needing to refuel with supernatural ability food.
Gradually, they noticed the zombies were retreating faster.
It seemed the Zombie King had figured out it couldn't stop them and was regrouping.
"The number of zombies is dropping; we can speed up!" Henry told Steven.
Earl was getting excited. "Maybe the Zombie King has already bailed through the subway! If that's the case, we just need to blow up the subway to end this!"
Steven wasn't so sure. "You're being too optimistic. The subway isn't a closed system; there are tons of entrances."
"To block it off completely, you'd have to blow up the whole subway tunnel! Do you think that's doable?"
Earl looked a bit sheepish. "Yeah, that's not really practical."
The Floral Springs Line was over twenty miles long; who knew how much dynamite it would take to destroy it.
It made more sense to just kill all the zombies here.
Meanwhile, over at Emberwick Base Survey Corps.
They were deep inside the DT-A Line subway tunnel.
After getting ambushed by a swarm of rats, they lost some soldiers and were struggling to push forward.
Finally, they stumbled upon a horde of zombies snoozing in the subway.
Lester's eyes widened in shock. "Fall back, fall back now!"
The zombies, catching a whiff of living humans, suddenly snapped awake and stood up.
Packed tight from one end of the subway to the other, it was wall-to-wall zombies.
There could be tens of thousands, maybe even hundreds of thousands!
It felt like the Zombie King had dragged every dead body in Starlight City into the subway, turning them into these nightmare zombies.
"Run, don't look back!" Lester threw a punch, setting a dozen zombies in front of him ablaze with a burst of flames.
But behind them, a massive wave of zombies shoved the burning ones aside and charged forward like maniacs!
Flamethrowers, grenades, shotguns—they used everything they had. The Survey Corps knew zombies hated fire, so they had everyone armed to the teeth.
Using their weapons, they managed to slow the horde down a bit.
"We gotta retreat for now! This is ten times bigger than the horde that hit us a few days ago; we can't handle this!"
Lester and the others felt their skin crawl; the sheer number of zombies was mind-blowing.
Even though they were mentally prepared, seeing it in real life was a whole different ball game.
"Fall back now, our guns can hold them off for a bit! Get to the nearest subway exit, move it! Move it! Move it!" Lester shouted commands, keeping his cool.
They weren't there to die; they were there to gather intel.
So when faced with an unbeatable horde, retreat was the only option.
But then, a soldier with a flamethrower suddenly froze, eyes wide.
He pointed at a massive shadow ahead. "What... what is that thing?!"
Not just him, all the Survey Corps members saw the huge figure behind the wall of fire.
It stepped over the flames, revealing a grotesque head three times the size of a normal human's.
The soldiers at the front were ripped apart instantly, and even Lester and the other Psychics felt a wave of despair wash over them.
"We're doomed!"
Steven and his crew were hot on the horde's trail, the whole tunnel ablaze.
Wearing special combat suits, they moved through the fire and burning bodies without a hitch.
The zombie horde was retreating fast, and their numbers were thinning out.
Steven and his team pushed through the tunnel and suddenly found themselves in an open area.
They'd reached a new station.
Steven then realized why the zombies were scattering so quickly.
This was a transfer station, letting the zombies spread into other tunnels in no time.
"Damn! With a transfer station, we can't pinpoint the Zombie King's exact location. How do we know which way to go?" Earl looked around, feeling lost.
"But I have a hunch," Steven suddenly spoke up.
His eyes were sharp, scanning the area. "The Zombie King is close."
Just as he finished speaking, heavy footsteps echoed from the surrounding tunnels, along with the unsettling sound of cracking bones.
It sounded like something was stomping on corpses, slowly and heavily coming their way.
The sound bounced around the dark tunnel, making it impossible to tell where it was coming from or how many there were.
"They're coming!"
