Chapter 207 Monster

Steven decided to go and rescue Cindy.

After all, the biggest problem for him at the shelter now was cybersecurity.

A house that was mostly automated, once subjected to an external cyber attack, posed unimaginable threats to Steven.

This decision was made very cautiously, not impulsively. But before going, he had to make a detailed plan and gather intelligence.

After enjoying a whole night of engaging in sexual activity, the next day, Steven called Nora and Elinor over to discuss the rescue plan together.

"Tell me everything. What's the current situation on her end?" Steven spoke cautiously to the two.

Elinor looked at Nora, saying, "You tell him!"

After all, Nora was Cindy's cousin and had a closer relationship, so she knew more information than Elinor.

Nora sat up straight and said seriously, "Cindy is trapped in Innovation Academy! It is the top elite school in Starlight City, not open to the public, and ordinary people don't know much about it."

She continued, "This school integrates education from kindergarten to university, only nurturing the children of the elite, and also admits a very few geniuses. Everyone who graduates from there is a future leader in politics and business."

Steven nodded, indicating that he was not unfamiliar with this.

Around 2050, education had already become polarized.

Ordinary people, the elite, and the aristocracy received completely different levels of education.

Whether it was schools, teaching resources, or career paths after graduation, there was no intersection.

So, some monopolized educational institutions emerged, namely elite schools.

Degrees still mattered to ordinary people, but for the true upper class, they had lost their significance.

"If she's in the school, how has a girl with paralyzed legs managed to survive until now?" Steven stated his question.

The school had a high population density and usually not much in the way of supplies.

If people fought for food, there might be a chance of survival.

But Cindy, she was a polio patient since childhood.

Nora said, "Innovation Academy has its own special food supply channels, and the warehouse is very well-stocked. Cindy and the others hid in the school cafeteria, so they didn't starve to death."

Steven nodded. 'That makes sense.'

He said, "But I don't understand. If she could contact the outside world, why didn't she contact you earlier, but waited until now?"

This was something Steven found very strange.

In a crisis, people would try every possible way to survive.

They wouldn't miss any chance to seek help.

He couldn't understand why did Cindy wait almost two months after the apocalypse to contact the outside world.

Nora was stumped by this question.

She looked hesitant, with a puzzled look in her eyes.

"I was too worried at the time and didn't get a chance to ask her," she said, and then took out her phone. "I'll call her now!"

Steven nodded, watching her quietly.

Nora put the phone on speaker and dialed the number in front of Steven.

"Sorry! The subscriber you dialed can not be connected for the moment, please redial later..." The busy tone echoed.

Nora looked a bit embarrassed and said to Steven, "I tried to contact her later, but it always says the call can't be connected."

Elinor covered her mouth and mocked. "Don't overthink it. Maybe she thought you were dead, so she didn't call you."

"That's not true!" Nora glared at her angrily.

Steven rubbed the back of his left hand and suddenly asked, "How far is Innovation Academy from here?"

Nora thought for a moment and replied, "About ten miles or so!"

"About?" Steven smiled helplessly, not knowing what to say about Nora's sense of distance.

He took out his phone and started checking the map.

Although the signal was bad and satellite positioning had issues, it was still possible to check the distance using an old map.

After some searching, Steven found the answer.

He told them, "Innovation Academy is located in the West Mountain District. From Emerald Estate to there, the straight-line distance is 14 miles."

"At that distance, it's a miracle the call got through even once," he added.

Nora and Elinor suddenly understood.

"No wonder. That's how it is!" Nora said.

Steven looked at Nora and teased, "But it's also possible she thought you were dead and didn't bother to call you!"

Nora clenched her fists angrily, saying, "No way! I'm... I'm an abled adult after all, I won't die so easily!"

Steven stood up and said to the two of them, "Come to the control room!"

Ordinary phones couldn't transmit signals through the nebula satellite chain, but the super server could.

Nora and Elinor were both computer illiterates, even worse than Steven.

The two obediently followed Steven to the control room.

Steven turned on the computer and used internet calling to dial Cindy.

Soon, a burst of static came from the computer, as if it was being strongly interfered with.

"It seems they're in a place with very unstable signals!" Steven judged.

After a few seconds, a cute voice came through, "Who are you?"

Hearing this voice, Nora and Elinor looked excited.

"It's Cindy!" Nora called out.

Nora quickly leaned in and said anxiously and joyfully, "Cindy, it's your sister! Where are you now? Tell me. I'll come to get you soon!"

The voice on the other end was intermittent, with a lot of static. "I'm in the school cafeteria... very dangerous... take me... away..."

Hearing the word "dangerous", both Elinor and Nora became very nervous, and a serious look flashed in Steven's eyes.

Steven asked, "What danger?"

"Cat... they... kill..." The voice became more chaotic, and the static was ear-piercing.

Steven frowned, planning to ask more questions, when suddenly a very eerie and terrifying sound came from the other end.

It was a scream that no human could make, extremely shrill and long.

The hair on the backs of Steven, Nora, and Elinor stood up, and Nora and Elinor turned pale with fright, quickly huddling into Steven's arms.

Then, they heard chaotic shouting from the other end.

"Run!"

"Mon... monster!"

The voices were filled with fear and despair.

And that shrill sound never stopped.

Steven even heard the sound of limbs being torn and bones being gnawed.

This sound was even more chilling than what he had heard while surviving in the Hermes District.

After a series of chaotic noises, the call was suddenly disconnected, leaving only the busy tone echoing anxiously.
