Chapter 274 Unable to Absorb
The explosions outside the shelter were like a volcano going off, with flames shooting up into the sky. Even from far away, the blasts were enough to make anyone's skin crawl.
The whole shelter was shaking, and Steven almost hit the ground from the tremors.
He fought to keep his balance.
The sudden chaos totally blindsided him.
The Extradimensional Space had to let off some steam because it couldn't handle the pressure, causing the outside explosion.
So, Steven couldn't open the Extradimensional Space for a bit.
He felt his supernatural power slowly draining to fix the Dimension Door.
Most of the blast's force got trapped inside the Extradimensional Space as pure energy.
He figured this energy might come in handy later.
Smoke filled the outside from the explosion.
Steven took a deep breath, steadied himself, and quickly checked the shelter for any changes.
There were cracks on the outside glass, not deep but a few inches long.
He pulled out his phone. "Aurora, what's the damage to the house?"
"Okay," Aurora replied. "House analysis complete. The southwest corner is damaged, with a damage extent of 22.6%."
Since the explosives went off in the air and most of the force got absorbed, the damage was manageable.
From the outside, you could see a big chunk of the outer wall of the shelter had fallen off.
They'd need to hit the same spot three more times with the same level of damage to have a shot at breaking through the fortress.
This meant they had to attack from the same spot.
But they had already used up 2,200 pounds of explosives. Steven figured they didn't have enough left for another round.
"Got it. I didn't see that coming! Well, they do have some skills. But I won't let you pull the same stunt twice!" Steven stared in the direction the explosives came from, pinpointing the enemy's location.
He couldn't just sit back and take hits, right?
'They want to throw explosives accurately from a distance, and that low hill is the best spot for it,' he thought.
But Steven couldn't use the Extradimensional Space right now, so he couldn't strike back.
He knew that after this success, they'd keep trying the same method.
"The Extradimensional Space has a limit to the energy it can absorb, which is a good reminder for me."
But this wasn't a big deal because the damage to the Dimension Door didn't mess with the main body of the Extradimensional Space.
He just needed to use his Supernatural Ability to slowly fix the Dimension Door.
Steven glanced at the distant low hill and then slowly retreated underground.
Even if the soldiers from West Mountain Base flattened everything above ground, Steven wouldn't come out.
He had to wait for his Dimension Door to recover, as it was his best defense and counterattack.
On the low hill, Charles, through binoculars, saw clear damage on half of the shelter's wall.
A big chunk of the wall had fallen off, but the structure was still solid, no signs of collapse or cracking.
Charles took a deep breath. "That was 1,100 pounds of explosives! Even a thirty-story building would be toast."
Elmer walked over, took a look, and said slowly, "This doesn't add up. According to our calculations, it should've done more damage."
Then he added, "But throwing explosives by hand is pretty primitive and can't get the best results. Another possibility is that Steven used his supernatural ability to absorb most of the blast."
Hearing Elmer's words, everyone around looked shocked.
"Absorb? Can he really take in that much explosive force?"
Shane, Clay, and Lily were all surprised.
They were all powerful psychics, but they knew they'd be toast in such a massive explosion, let alone absorb part of it.
'Steven is something else!' Lily thought to herself.
Clay looked worriedly at Charles.
"If that's true, doesn't it mean it's gonna be really tough to breach this shelter?"
"Not necessarily." Charles handed her the binoculars. "It did some good damage! We just need to hit it a few more times to break through!"
He continued, "And don't worry too much. His defense is strong, but he stays inside and only uses a sniper rifle to attack, which means he's good at defense but not at offense."
Everyone nodded, agreeing with Charles's take.
If someone were both amazing at offense and defense, they shouldn't exist in this world!
"So what's the plan now? We don't have enough explosives," Shane asked.
Their transport was limited to a snowmobile and a dozen dog sleds.
Hauling 2,200 pounds of TNT in one go was already a stretch.
Charles said, "No rush. We'll head back and send someone to get more explosives from the base."
"Leave a few people to take turns watching the shelter, so no one inside can escape. We'll take our time with him!" he instructed.
Without more explosives, they were stuck, and Charles knew it.
Siege warfare often took a long time, and he had the patience for it.
So Charles started organizing the special forces.
Three people would take turns monitoring the shelter 24/7.
Due to the extreme cold, even with winter gear, they couldn't stay outside for long, so rotations were necessary.
Meanwhile, Charles personally went back to escort the explosives.
The others returned to Cox Village to rest.
Everyone went their separate ways.
To be safe, Steven temporarily abandoned the two above-ground floors of the building.
This way, even if the enemy had more explosives, they could only break through the surface but not the more heavily fortified underground space.
When he went underground, the women in the house anxiously asked Steven about the situation.
"Steven, what's happening outside? That sound was like the sky was falling!" Elinor walked over, looking worried.
The other women also looked uneasy.
It was their first time experiencing such a terrifying explosion.
Even though they were in the basement, and the room had noise reduction features, the entire shelter shook from the blast.
