Chapter 398 The Candidate
Steven turned around and slowly sat back down on the couch.
Everyone else followed suit, wanting to see what Steven had in mind.
First, how to deal with Frostheart, and second, the upcoming battle plan.
After all, according to Jordan, the allied forces would attack in three days.
Seeing their eager eyes, Steven decided to address the Frostheart issue first.
He kept his tone steady. "You all just heard it all. It's supposed to unlock Supernatural abilities. The big four bases have been using it—no issues so far. But I'm not buying it."
His eyes scanned the room, locking onto every face.
The Psychics were relatively indifferent.
They already had abilities and lived relatively stable lives in the shelter, so they didn't have a strong desire to become stronger.
Therefore, they weren't very interested in the potentially harmful Frostheart.
But the normies? Oh, they were all over it. Except for Cindy, every last one of them was practically drooling.
After all, who wouldn't want to go from zero to hero in the apocalypse? More power meant a better shot at staying alive.
Steven eyed them sharply. "Think this through. I've only got two Frosthearts here. First one up is the guinea pig. If you're in, raise your hand."
Hearing Steven's words, the women hesitated.
They were desperate for powers but didn't wanna deal with the unknowns.
Nora didn't hesitate. "I'll do it!" Her eyes burned with resolve.
Seeing Nora step up, Elinor jumped in, and Emilia, hesitating, half-raised her hand too.
Steven grinned and said to Nora, "You've got the guts. The first Frostheart's yours."
Nora's eyes were full of joy, and she excitedly hugged Steven's neck tightly. "Great, thank you, Steven!"
Emilia smiled faintly, a bit disappointed but quickly composed herself.
After all, her relationship with Steven was average, so it was normal for such a good thing not to come her way.
At a certain age, she wasn't the type to compete fiercely.
However, Elinor was visibly frustrated, punching her leg as if blaming herself for raising her hand too late.
They didn't know that Steven's so-called hand-raising vote was just a formality.
He had already decided that Nora was the most suitable candidate.
First off, the test subject had to be someone the shelter could afford to lose. If things went south, it wouldn't mess up the whole operation. Out of the whole team, only Nora and Emilia fit the bill. Elinor was the doc, and Aubrey was a key techie—no way they were getting experimented on.
Second, the person had to be someone he could keep on a tight leash. Who knew what the Frostheart would do? If it worked out, it would create a Psychic. But if it didn't, he needed someone who'd stay loyal no matter what.
After considering both those factors, Steven knew Nora was the best candidate.
At this moment, Nora, with tears of excitement in her eyes, clung to Steven. "Steven, thank you, thank you for giving me this opportunity!"
Steven said gently, "If I don't take care of you, who will I take care of?"
He had Nora sit down, and they began discussing the next battle plan.
After all, the situation had changed.
Frostwood Base and Snowfall Cult could both be utilized.
Steven said, "Forget about these two playing nice—no one's trustworthy. They're probably just screwing with us, and they'll stab us in the back when it counts. So we've gotta be ready for all four. But if things go sideways…"
A wicked grin spread across his face as he folded his hands. "Let 'em drop dead right on our doorstep."
The battle plan didn't change much.
It just added an element of adaptability.
They had to consider the two forces as uncertain factors.
Any carelessness was absolutely unacceptable.
After the discussion, it was time for the moment everyone had been eagerly anticipating.
Using the Frostheart on Nora.
People are naturally curious.
They wanted to see firsthand how the Frostheart was used and what miraculous effects it had.
The Frostheart's usage was simple; Jordan had explained it before leaving.
Just place it on the person's forehead, and it would automatically merge with the host.
For safety, Steven found a sturdy room and tied Nora to the bed with restraints.
Nora's expression was a mix of anticipation and nervousness, her body trembling with excitement.
She was waiting for her fate to change.
But she didn't know that if she showed any strange behavior after gaining Supernatural abilities, like being controlled or attacking others, what would Steven do to her?
Such thoughts were too cruel to consider.
In front of everyone, Steven slowly opened the small wooden box.
Wisps of white cold air emanated from it.
Everyone stared wide-eyed.
They saw two shiny white spherical crystals, irregular in shape, and seemingly alive, wriggling.
Wearing gloves, Steven used tweezers to pick up a Frostheart and slowly placed it on Nora's forehead.
Everyone held their breath, watching the scene with tension and anticipation.
As the Frostheart touched her skin, tiny, fine lines like tentacles extended from the small flesh ball, sticking to her head.
Then, everyone saw the white flesh ball melt and sink into Nora's head.
It was a fusion process.
These cells could perfectly merge with human flesh.
Nora's eyes became vacant, losing focus.
The whole process was swift; in less than two seconds, the Frostheart completely entered Nora's brain.
Only a white mark remained, flashing briefly on her forehead before disappearing.
Nora's eyes showed a hint of fatigue, and she quickly fell into a deep sleep.
Steven said to everyone, "We need to observe her changes for a while! Let's go."
The room had surveillance, and the walls were made of alloy, so any emergencies could be handled promptly.
