Chapter 237 The Scout
Seeing Steven's warning, a big, happy grin spread across Earl's chubby face. It felt nice to have someone looking out for him.
But he didn't really take Steven's warning seriously.
Cox Town was just a small, out-of-the-way place on the edge of Starlight City.
The property prices were dirt cheap, and the folks from Cox Town didn't have much standing in the eyes of city people.
'Who'd even care about a place like this?' Earl thought.
"Mr. Rogers, come on, you're the one with the most to lose, your villa is a prime target." Earl tossed his phone on the table and went back to flipping through his erotic manga.
Meanwhile, 17 miles west of Cox Town...
This area used to be a new development of Starlight City, and through the snow, you could still make out some buildings.
Two people slowly emerged from the buildings in this new area.
They made an odd pair: a guy over 6.5 feet tall, built like a bear, and a woman, dressed in thin clothes, with a nimble figure.
Both were wearing white, making them hard to spot in the snow unless you looked closely.
The woman wore very little, a tight white leather outfit that showed off her curves.
In the brutal cold of minus 140 degrees Fahrenheit, it was crazy to see someone dressed like that.
She wasn't even wearing a hat or scarf, yet she seemed totally fine in the freezing weather.
The tall guy next to her had a rifle wrapped in white cloth on his back, leaving deep footprints with every step.
He clearly hated it, struggling with each step.
"I wonder when this snow will stop! If it keeps up for a few more months, the whole world might get buried," Zane Flores grumbled, looking up at the snow-filled sky, frustration etched on his rugged face.
Next to him, Lieutenant Brittany Perez from West Mountain Base smiled lightly and said, "The snow won't fall forever. The water molecules in the air have almost all condensed. Without evaporation from other areas, how could more snow form?"
She reached out to catch a snowflake. "I heard even the temperature at the equator has dropped to minus 70 degrees Fahrenheit."
She continued, "So, there will only be cold in the future, and snowfall will become increasingly rare. This is probably God's last bit of mercy for the world!"
Zane scratched his head, not quite getting Brittany's poetic words.
Brittany ignored him and walked over to the sled tied by the roadside.
She sat on a large dog, her light body barely making a dent.
Then Brittany crossed her legs and pulled a palm-sized device from the cotton bag at her waist. It was a communication device for West Mountain Base.
Brittany and Zane's main job was to scout the area around West Mountain Base.
"Coralwood Street, Ankenra City in West Mountain District has been checked," Brittany said.
You could see several locations already marked on Brittany's device.
Zane asked, "Where to next?"
Brittany looked at the device and said, "Originally, our scouting was limited to West Mountain District. But this time, according to orders from higher-ups, there's another place that needs special attention."
Zane asked curiously, "Special attention?"
It was clear who was in charge. Brittany definitely outranked Zane, at least when it came to deciding their route.
Brittany said, "We've got a special task from the higher-ups, no details though. Doesn't seem like a big deal. Just the usual—check it out and report back."
She suddenly stood up on the sled, shading her eyes with her hand as she peered into the distance.
At the edge of her vision, a large river glinted in the light.
"The place is by the river. We can just follow it!" Brittany announced.
Because of the extreme cold, a lot of base stations around the world were out of commission.
So, various positioning devices were tough to use.
Even if you could see the location on a map, the map was from before the apocalypse and was now just a rough guide. You still had to confirm the spot manually.
"Let's go! Last stop, then we're done!" Brittany smiled and sat back down on the sled.
Zane whistled to the four Alaskan Malamutes in front, then gave the sled a push from behind, hopping on once they picked up speed.
With his size, it was a struggle for just four sled dogs to pull him.
An hour later, Brittany and Zane rolled into Cox Town.
As they got closer, the scene before them left them both stunned.
Their destination was supposed to be the Emerald Estate by the river.
But as they followed the river, they saw a village made entirely of ice and snow in the distance.
Especially the huge ice castle in the middle of the village—it really stood out.
Driven by curiosity, they decided to check it out.
The sled's arrival outside Cox Village immediately set off the sled dogs in the village.
A dog at the village entrance started barking, and soon all the dogs in the village joined in.
This ruckus put the whole village on high alert.
Ever since they tried to attack the Emerald Estate and Steven single-handedly took out a hundred people, they'd been living in constant fear.
Even though Steven and Earl had reached a truce, promising not to harm the people of Cox Village again, the villagers were so scared of Steven that any little noise made them worry he was attacking again.
So, the villagers all grabbed their weapons and led their dogs over.
Brittany and Zane were also surprised to see so many people.
"Who would've thought there'd be so many survivors here! Not only did they not freeze or starve, but they also kept the village going. It's incredible!" one of them exclaimed.
They got even more curious about this village.
A group of villagers cautiously blocked them outside the village.
A branch leader holding a shotgun asked coldly, "Who are you? What do you want?"
Zane frowned, his right hand already on the safety of his rifle.
But Brittany smiled slightly, stepped forward, and said, "I'm a lieutenant from the Starlight Division, here to search for and assist survivors of the snow disaster on behalf of the official organization. Don't be nervous!"
As she spoke, she pulled out her credentials from her pocket and showed them to the villagers.
She knew these survivors still had high hopes for the official organization. So, showing her ID could avoid a lot of trouble.
