Chapter 249 The Foolish Man
On his way back, Earl mulled over what Steven had told him, and his mood took a nosedive.
If that day really came, what should he do?
Steven was his only confidant now, and no one else was willing to listen to his ramblings.
(He didn't know that most of the time, Steven was using AI to chat with him.)
Steven was very good to him, and he didn't want to do anything to betray Steven.
However, the villagers of Cox Village hated Steven to the core.
"If people from other organizations really show up, I bet the villagers would be begging them to take Steven out!" Earl muttered, scratching his head in frustration.
He felt the situation was a real mess.
Even he, someone favored by God, didn't know how to solve this problem.
After getting back to the village, Earl found his buddy, Ralph Cox.
"Ralph, have any outsiders come to our village recently?" Earl asked.
Ralph laughed as soon as he heard this. "Earl, you need to get out more! How could you not know about such a big thing?"
Earl was startled. "What big thing?"
Ralph said, "Yesterday, two high-ranking officials came to our village. It's said they are from the military."
Ralph continued, "We don't know their background, but Mr. Gavin Cox treated them very well. He asked every household to bring out their best to entertain them. It's a pity you didn't see how attentive Mr. Gavin Cox was to them."
Earl's eyes widened, and his back felt cold.
These two people must be from the hostile organization Steven mentioned, here to gather intelligence.
"What did Mr. Gavin Cox say to them?" Earl asked nervously.
Ralph shrugged. "I wasn't qualified to ask about their conversation! But I noticed Mr. Gavin Cox has been in a good mood these past two days. He even said he's now the mayor."
Earl's heart was in turmoil.
Steven's words kept echoing in his ears. "If one day, they run out of food, Cox Town will be a huge granary they can plunder at will—under the guise of requisition. What can you do when that time comes?"
"No, I have to go talk to Mr. Gavin Cox!" Ignoring Ralph's shouts behind him, Earl ran towards Gavin's house.
At this moment, Gavin was in a very good mood.
He had just called the village heads of the other villages in Cox Town to announce that he had been appointed mayor by the higher-ups.
Although it was just a verbal promise from Brittany, Gavin took it seriously.
The other villages, wary of Cox Village's strong power, especially Earl's psychic abilities, didn't dare to object.
After all, Cox Village was already the strongest force in Cox Town, and everyone agreed it was reasonable for Gavin to be mayor.
So everyone started calling Gavin "Mayor."
Gavin was extremely happy to be recognized by everyone.
He believed he could make a significant and lasting impact on history.
At this moment, Earl rushed in.
"Mr. Gavin Cox, did you meet with two outsiders? What did you tell them?" Earl looked anxious, afraid Gavin had said something he shouldn't have.
Steven had warned that if the people of Cox Village helped outsiders against him, he wouldn't show any mercy!
Not long ago, the deaths of over a hundred people were proof of that!
Seeing Earl's rudeness, Gavin's face immediately soured. "Earl, is that how you talk to your elders? So rude!"
Earl, still somewhat afraid of Gavin, had to say, "Mr. Cox, this is important, I need an answer."
Gavin gave him a long, hard look.
He had always looked down on the useless Earl.
If it weren't for Earl's supernatural ability, he wouldn't even bother to reply.
"Yes, it's true!" Gavin replied. "Two high-ranking officials came to inspect our Cox Village. They fully affirmed our current situation."
Gavin puffed out his chest and proudly said, "And they appointed me as the mayor of Cox Town!"
Earl didn't care about that. He asked, "Mr. Cox, did you tell them about our village's grain reserves?"
With Steven's reminder, Earl realized that the grain reserves were a major secret that couldn't be easily disclosed.
But Gavin laughed and said, "They are high-ranking officials, and our grain reserves are a great achievement for our village. Why should I hide it?"
Earl's heart sank; he didn't expect Steven to be right.
Gritting his teeth, he continued to ask, "Did you mention Steven to them?"
As soon as Earl mentioned Steven's name, Gavin's face changed. "That demon, who killed 128 people in our Cox Village, deserves to die! We can't deal with him, but there are people who can."
He continued, "I've reported his situation to the higher-ups. They said they would deal with Steven seriously!"
Earl suddenly felt his legs go weak and collapsed to the ground.
"It's over, completely over!" Earl said, his face pale.
He knew Steven was a vengeful person who wouldn't tolerate any betrayal.
Gavin's actions would surely bring Steven's revenge.
Seeing Earl's cowardly appearance, Gavin snorted coldly, full of disdain. "What are you afraid of! To the regular army of the organization, Steven is nothing! Just wait and see, once the organization's troops arrive, they will wipe him out in no time! Then, the deaths of my 128 people will be avenged!"
Earl's face was ashen; he knew it was pointless to say anything.
Gavin's arrogance could very well lead Cox Village into a desperate situation.
Gavin had no idea how powerful Steven was, nor did he understand what the existence of a psychic meant to ordinary people.
Cox Village still existed not because of Steven's mercy, but because Earl was still somewhat useful to Steven, and the villagers posed no significant threat to him; Steven could easily wipe them out.
But if Steven wanted to kill them, none of them would survive!
"Stop talking nonsense, go home and get a good night's sleep, and forget what you said to me today!" Gavin coldly stared at Earl on the ground.
"Act as a trump card for Cox Village and simply do as I say! You don't need to have your own thoughts!" Gavin instructed.
