Chapter 514 Seeking Refuge
The sudden zombie riot had the investigation team scrambling to get out of the underground.
"Something's off. Why are these zombies acting so weird?" Lanny grumbled through gritted teeth.
Theron, running alongside him, explained calmly, "If our hunch is right, maybe all the zombie behavior we've seen so far was just a show!"
"A show? For us?" Lanny asked, bewildered.
Theron nodded. "Yeah, to make us think the mission was done and dusted so we'd leave Starlight City."
"Now that you mention it, taking down those Zombie Kings was way too easy," Lanny mused.
"Especially that fight where six Zombie Kings showed up in the same spot. It felt like they were just waiting for us to take them out," Theron added, his usual calm demeanor slipping into a more serious tone.
"Completing the mission isn't about killing the so-called Zombie King anymore. It's about finding the puppet master behind this zombie horde," Theron said grimly.
As they ran, the Bronze Flying Elite Zombies were hot on their heels.
Lanny charged up his Levitating Energy Cannon and fired at them!
The powerful beam blasted a hole through one of the zombies, sending it crashing to the ground. But it wasn't enough to kill it; these Zombies were even tougher than the regular Bronze Elite Zombies.
The zombie quickly took to the air again, roaring in anger as it chased after them!
The sound of flapping wings grew louder, and soon, dozens of Bronze Flying Elite Zombies were closing in on the team.
Theron pulled out his lance from his back and took a stand behind the group.
The nearly 10-foot-long lance spun like a windmill in his hands.
As a Strengthening System Psychic, Theron could enhance his body's functions, making him a top-tier warrior in Blizzard City, almost unbeatable in hand-to-hand combat.
Theron was their impenetrable shield!
"Get back!" he shouted, a terrifying grin spreading across his face as he swung his lance at the approaching zombies.
A huge Bronze Flying Elite Zombie took a hit to the waist, its body snapping in half and flying away like a discarded ragdoll.
"Come on, you bastards! Let's play some baseball!" Theron laughed, knocking the zombies away one by one with his lance.
Despite being a nearly 6.5-foot-tall burly man wielding a massive weapon, his movements were incredibly agile. The black shadows of his lance made it impossible for the zombies to dodge.
The zombie horde was closing in fast.
Otha and the others sprinted to the subway exit, not looking back, trusting Theron to hold the line.
Once they were out, Theron soon followed, jumping out of the subway.
"Quick, quick, there are too many of them!" Theron yelled, covered in green zombie blood.
Everyone piled into the snow vehicle, and Eris floored it, speeding away.
Otha glanced in the rearview mirror and saw the horde of zombies pouring out of the underground, chasing them across the snowfield!
The scariest ones were the Bronze Elite Zombies and the Bronze Flying Elite Zombies. They were way faster than the regular zombies, chasing the car and letting out ear-piercing screeches!
Lanny gritted his teeth, rolled down the window, and fired the Levitating Energy Cannon at them.
Sharpshooter Leandro popped up from the sunroof, raising his black sniper rifle to take shots at the zombies behind them.
But what they saw made their hearts race.
The horde of zombies was like a massive tsunami, and they were just a tiny boat about to be swallowed up!
It was a race against time; if the car got swarmed by zombies, they were all dead meat!
Even the top Psychics wouldn't stand a chance against such a massive horde.
Otha took off his sunglasses and activated [Annihilation]!
A blinding white light swept through, instantly dissolving a huge chunk of the horde, wiping out thousands of zombies in one go!
Otha started coughing badly; using Annihilation in his current state was eating away at his already limited lifespan.
But they had no choice; they had to get out of there fast.
Otha's move bought them some time, and they managed to put some distance between them and the horde.
But the zombies were still hot on their trail, not slowing down one bit.
Otha's heart sank.
Seeing the sheer terror of the horde, he finally realized that the previous mission being so easy was definitely a setup.
This time, the zombie manipulator thought they had left Starlight City, so they lost control over the zombies, showing them the true horror of the horde.
"Otha, these things don't get tired. We can't keep running like this! We need to call for help!" Theron said, looking serious.
Otha forced himself to stop coughing, blood at the corners of his mouth, and said coldly, "Head to the nearest shelter! Then notify all forces in Starlight City to send reinforcements."
At this point, it was too late to call for help from Silvercrest District.
They couldn't just fire missiles here for an indiscriminate attack, right? They'd die too.
The various shelters built for wartime conditions were undoubtedly the best choice now.
As long as they hid underground, no matter how many zombies there were, they couldn't break through in a short time.
Eris was already checking the map. "The nearest shelter is Emberwick Base."
"Go! Then notify everyone to send reinforcements immediately!" Otha decided promptly.
"Yes!" Eris drove towards Emberwick Base while sending messages to all major forces.
Megan jumped up from her chair when she got the message. She was stunned!
"Didn't they say the zombie problem was solved? Why are they back? And they want to take refuge here?"
Megan instinctively wanted to refuse.
But thinking of the investigation team backed by Silvercrest District, she could only grit her teeth and storm out of the office, fuming.
At this time, Emberwick Base had resumed production, with black smoke billowing from the refinery chimneys.
Everyone thought life had returned to normal, but who could have imagined this was just the beginning of the disaster?
