Chapter 238 Guidance

Sure enough, once Brittany and Zane introduced themselves, the folks in Cox Village got a whole lot friendlier.

Even with the world ending, they still respected authority.

The new village chief, Gavin, stepped up and took a good look at Brittany's credentials.

Seeing their official uniforms and serious vibes, he bought their story.

Gavin's face did a 180; he went from stern to all smiles, eager to please. "Oh, officer! Welcome, welcome!"

The villagers immediately dropped their weapons.

Curious eyes were on Brittany and Zane, with a million questions buzzing in their heads.

After all, communication now wasn't what it used to be before the apocalypse, and they had no clue about the outside world.

Was the government still running? If so, how were they handling the snow disaster?

Nobody knew.

But that didn't stop Gavin from trying to butter them up.

He invited them into the village and quickly got people to prepare some food.

"Quick, whip up a feast; the higher-ups are here for an inspection. We gotta treat them right!" Gavin told the villagers to bring out some of their stored food.

Someone asked, "Mr. Gavin, we don't even know why they're here. Why are we being so nice?"

Gavin replied, "As long as they represent the government, that's all that matters."

"In these crazy times, it's our chance to rise. If we can get in good with the government, we might have a shot at a better future! Besides, it's just some food. We can handle it," Gavin continued.

After Gavin's explanation, the villagers got it and went back to their homes to fetch the best stuff they had to entertain Brittany and Zane.

Brittany and Zane were seeing such a lively village for the first time.

Seeing their orderly lives, seemingly untouched by the snow disaster, they couldn't help but be impressed.

With Gavin and a bunch of Cox family leaders, they toured the village, taking it all in.

Brittany asked, "Sir, despite the heavy snow, your village seems fine. How did you manage that?"

Hearing this, Gavin puffed out his chest, ready to brag. "First off, the people of Cox Village are tough and self-reliant, not beaten by the snow disaster! Secondly, I've played a part as the village chief."

Gavin went on, "Honestly, I always tell them to store more food for emergencies. So, when the snow disaster hit, our villagers didn't worry about food. Not to brag, but not a single person in Cox Village has gone hungry!"

Brittany and Zane exchanged a knowing look.

The Cox Village leaders, listening to Gavin's shameless boasting, were speechless.

'Let's be real, you're just filling Jared's shoes. He was the one running things,' they thought. 'Plus, Cox Town has always been big on farming and fishing, with a habit of storing supplies. How's this all your doing?'

Brittany casually asked, "So, you guys have a lot of food in Cox Village?"

Gavin grinned proudly. "You must not know much about the Starlight City farmers' market. Honestly, Cox Town supplies thirty percent of the veggies for the whole Starlight City!"

Then it hit Gavin that he might've said too much.

In his rush to show off Cox Village's importance, he let slip about their food reserves.

What if the higher-ups asked them to share their food with other areas?

Gavin quickly tried to cover his tracks. "But, you know, the heavy snow over the past month has spoiled a lot of our food and veggies. We're just getting by now."

Brittany smiled slightly. "Your entire Cox Town must have at least a thousand households, right? Being able to maintain sustenance is quite impressive."

Gavin quickly replied with a smile, "Actually, our Cox Village is in the best shape in all of Cox Town."

He continued, "Check out these igloos we built. I had them constructed to perfectly solve the housing problem! Other villages weren't as smart; many houses got buried in the snow, and a lot of people died!"

Gavin pointed to the igloos in the village, proudly taking all the credit.

The other villagers were speechless but couldn't call him out because he was the village chief.

Brittany and Zane looked at Gavin in surprise.

They were secretly impressed, thinking, 'Who would've thought this village chief is so capable!'

Zane looked at the snow castle in the village. "Were these igloos all built by hand? It's incredible; you really have skilled craftsmen here!"

Gavin replied without missing a beat, "Our village is full of artisans. Naturally, they need to have some skills to earn extra money and support their families!"

Brittany and Zane nodded, not doubting him further.

On the bright side, Gavin's self-praise did help to keep Earl's presence under wraps.

Brittany and Zane toured the village but didn't find anything more valuable.

The village had prepared lunch, and Gavin warmly invited them to join.

Brittany and Zane naturally didn't refuse.

On their missions, they had been eating compressed food and hadn't had hot food in a long time. So, they accepted Gavin's invitation to his home, accompanied by a group of Cox family members.

The igloo was well-insulated and wind-resistant, and with more people inside, it didn't feel as cold.

There was a stove set up inside the igloo, and they cooked their meals directly over the fire.

Even so, in these times, having hot food was still a luxury.

To entertain Brittany and Zane, the villagers brought out their best items.

Some cured meat and the local staple, frozen fish, were all thrown into the pot, making a delicious feast!

"Please, make yourselves at home; hope you enjoy it!" Gavin and the Cox Village leaders warmly encouraged them to eat.

Looking at the steaming pot of food, Brittany thought to herself, 'This is indeed a wealthy village.'
