Chapter 258 That's Terrifying

Another five soldiers down.

And they still hadn't even caught a glimpse of the person holed up in that villa.

The weight of defeat hung heavy over the remaining twenty-four members of the rescue team.

Yosef, the deputy leader, stepped up and said, "We don't know anything about these guys, and we're not exactly packing high-tech gear or bomb disposal stuff. Maybe we should call back to base and ask for backup?"

Yosef was being practical; he knew they might not be able to pull this off alone.

But Shawn shot him down immediately. "No way! We're the rescue team. Asking for reinforcements would be humiliating!"

"But..." Yosef began.

"No buts! Keep attacking. I ain't buying this place is invincible. There's gotta be a weak spot!" Shawn snapped.

Yosef tried again, "Shawn, don't be rash!"

Shawn's face was set in a grimace as he gritted his teeth. "I'm not being rash! We have zero intel on this place. If we don't fight, someone else will have to!"

Shawn continued, "Let's be the vanguard and gather some intel on this villa first!"

Yosef fell silent, realizing Shawn was treating this like a full-on war.

Shawn had given their opponents full credit.

Even though they'd already lost six soldiers, they'd cleared all the explosive traps around the villa.

Shawn ordered everyone to spread out and scout the massive villa from all angles.

The goal was to gather complete intel on the place. If they found a weak spot, even better.

"It's just a tough nut to crack. Once we break in, we'll take out the bastards inside!" Shawn said, determined to get the culprits.

So the remaining team members spread out, investigating the entire shelter from all directions.

Nora watched worriedly. "Will they really find a weak spot doing this?"

Steven, lounging with a bag of chips, said, "I checked this place out thoroughly when I first got here. Plus, we do routine checks every three days. There are no external weaknesses."

Nora sighed, watching the soldiers. "But seeing them search so recklessly makes me nervous. I'm afraid something unexpected might happen!"

She hesitated to say more.

Steven saw through her thoughts and smiled. "You mean, if we could attack them proactively, it would be better, right?"

Nora blushed and smiled. "Exactly."

Steven chuckled, "Attacking them is easy. But I prefer playing defense and counterattacking."

"No rush. Let's see what they've got first," he added.

Steven wasn't in a hurry to counterattack because he knew this was just an advance team, and their firepower wasn't that strong.

He wasn't very familiar with modern military weapons and combat tactics.

It would be good to gather some intel through this experiment.

He turned on the big screen in the living room and had the smart system play the surveillance footage outside.

The cameras were hidden behind bulletproof glass, so they couldn't be destroyed from the outside and could monitor the entire exterior of the shelter.

Every move the soldiers made was under Steven's watchful eye.

The rescue team cautiously investigated the shelter.

But after their investigation, they found no points of entry.

The group summarized their findings.

"This place is like a modern war fortress! If it has one weakness, it's that it has no offensive capabilities. That's a relief! You could even say it's a doomsday survival shelter built purely for defense," Yosef concluded.

"In a wealthy neighborhood like this, it's not surprising to see such structures. Either they're bored billionaires with too much money and nothing better to do, or they've got a whole lot of skeletons in their closet and are terrified of retribution. Either way, they must have spent a fortune on this fortress."

Hearing this, team leader Shawn frowned and thought for a moment.

Then he said, "That's why they set so many traps. Now that the traps are cleared, they can only take the hits! This makes things easier! We'll use explosives to blow a corner of this house open and then rush in to take them out!"

Yosef said, "But we don't know how much explosive we need."

Shawn sneered. "Even a battlefield fortress can be blown open with enough explosives. Can a privately built shelter be tougher than a fortress?"

"If we focus all our firepower on one spot, we can definitely break through!" Shawn rallied the soldiers.

So, everyone pooled together all the explosives they had.

Thirty people's worth of explosives was no small stash.

West Mountain Base might lack a lot of things, but weapons and equipment weren't one of them.

When Steven first checked out the barracks, he noticed most of the weapons were gone.

Turns out, a big chunk of them were with these soldiers.

They gathered all sorts of powerful bombs, grenades, and explosives and placed them in a corner.

Seeing this, Steven immediately activated the sound isolation system. Excessive noise could damage their eardrums.

He then got up from his chair. "Enjoy the show here! I'm gonna teach them a lesson."

Steven was getting tired of just sitting back and letting them attack.

He went upstairs and grabbed a Magnum Sniper Rifle.

After setting the timed bombs, the soldiers quickly retreated.

The combined power of explosives from thirty people was insane, enough to level a two-story building.

They all stayed far back, thinking that even if the explosion didn't break through the wall, it would at least make a big hole.

Once they knew the wall's strength, they could use even more explosives next time to break through the shelter!

"3, 2, 1, Fire!" Shawn hid behind a wall, counting softly, and everyone covered their ears to avoid damaging their eardrums.

But even so, the next moment they still heard a deafening explosion!

It was a series of blasts!

The massive explosion created a shockwave, lifting several feet of snow off the ground and sending it flying in a snowstorm!

Shawn and Yosef were eager to see the results.

They expected it to at least blow off a layer of the wall!

But when the soldiers looked over, they were all left with their mouths hanging open!

A huge crater appeared at the corner of the wall, with snow and soil overturned.

The black wall, crafted from an unknown material that defied categorization, remained smooth and unscathed. It was neither marble nor metal, yet it possessed the hardness of both.

"How is this possible! Not even a scratch?" A soldier's eyes widened in disbelief.

"What a sturdy shelter!" Yosef gasped, seeing that even several feet below the surface, the shelter was made of the same black, hard material!

Shawn exclaimed, "So, a frontal assault is impossible. We can't even dig a tunnel?"

Shawn and Yosef exchanged looks.

This shelter was practically impenetrable! What kind of weapons could possibly break through those defenses?

Despite the massive explosion, Steven didn't even bother to look.

Only Steven knew how strong the shelter's defenses were.

A shelter claimed to be nuclear-proof was no joke.

Shawn gritted his teeth and said, "Our weapons alone won't cut it. Request reinforcements and have the commander bring the demolition team!"

Even the toughest bunker could be destroyed with enough firepower!

As a rescue team, they weren't fully prepared, so failing to breach the shelter was understandable.

Shawn believed that West Mountain Base had the resources to take down this shelter!

"If explosives don't work, maybe I can give it a try!" Yosef said in a deep voice.

They had almost given up on a frontal assault.

But they needed enough intel to pave the way for the follow-up troops.

Yosef signaled to a soldier carrying a black metal case. He opened the case, revealing a heavy black sniper rifle!

Shawn couldn't help but say, "You want to use that?"

Yosef nodded. "Yes! This heavy sniper can destroy a tank with one shot!"

He skillfully assembled the heavy sniper, handling the heavy weapon with ease.

He set up the sniper and loaded a special bullet.

"Even if it's bulletproof glass, I wonder if it can withstand my shot." Yosef aimed at the shelter's glass.

Everyone was filled with anticipation.

Their explosive methods weren't professional, as the explosives weren't specifically designed to destroy fortresses.

But a heavy sniper with armor-piercing rounds could threaten a fortress!

It could even penetrate the thick armor of a tank!

Yosef pulled the trigger, and a loud gunshot rang out.

Steven, on the second floor, was about to counterattack when he suddenly heard a piercing screech.

He looked at the glass and saw a white scratch on the incredibly strong bulletproof glass!

"A heavy sniper?" Steven instantly guessed what weapon the enemy was using.

Only a heavy sniper capable of anti-armor could leave a scratch on his shelter's glass!

"That's terrifying!" Steven took a deep breath.

'This bulletproof glass is 31 inches thick, and he somehow managed to scratch it. What if he fires tens of thousands of rounds and cracks the glass?' he thought.
