Chapter 229 People from West Mountain Base
After Steven took off from Innovation Academy with Cindy and Aubrey, Lily led the rest of the students up to the snow surface.
They had no clue that Fluffy had tagged along with Steven and Cindy. If they had known, they probably would've stayed put at Innovation Academy, where they still had enough supplies. But they didn't see that coming.
Once they hit the snow surface, the freezing wind made everyone shiver, forcing them back into the snow cave for shelter.
Meanwhile, Warren, the class president, excitedly called his dad, Gilbert, for help. When the call connected, Gilbert asked about the situation and told them to stay put; he'd send someone to rescue them.
Everyone was thrilled. "Awesome, we're finally saved!" "We won't have to stay in this place any longer!" "Class president, you're amazing!"
Others tried to contact their families too. They were all from wealthy families, but only Warren got through. This made them uneasy. Could their families have met with misfortune? They didn't want to think about it. The ongoing suffering had numbed them, but the unanswered phone calls left a tiny spark of hop.
Lily, however, felt something was off. If Warren's dad could rescue them, why hadn't he sent help earlier? And if he couldn't, why promise to come? She couldn't shake the feeling that something was wrong.
They waited in the snow cave for over ten hours when suddenly there was a commotion outside. "My dad's here!" Warren shouted, crawling out of the cave. The other students quickly followed, not wanting to be left behind.
Lily, regaining some strength, stood up and, with the help of two classmates, climbed up to the snow surface. There, they saw four dog sleds with large Alaskan Malamutes, all in standard-issue coats. Clearly, these were specially trained dogs.
Seven or eight people got off the sleds, dressed in white clothes, helmets, and even their weapons were wrapped in white cloth, blending into the snowy landscape. They exuded authority and menace.
Lily recognized them as battle-hardened veterans, definitely elite. The soldiers exchanged a few words, then scrutinized the students, occasionally nodding, as if assessing goods. The excited students didn't notice.
Warren stepped forward and asked, "My dad is Gilbert. Did he send you to rescue us?"
At that moment, a man emerged from behind the white-clad soldiers. He lifted his mask, revealing a somewhat haggard face, and excitedly called out, "Warren, Warren! It's me, son!"
Warren stared for a moment, taking a couple of seconds to recognize his own father. It wasn't his fault; his dad, the chief of police in Starlight City, used to be quite portly with a prosperous look. But now, after more than a month, Gilbert's face had thinned so much he was almost unrecognizable.
Warren was confused but still excited as he walked over to hug Gilbert. "Dad, you finally came! You have no idea what I've been through," he cried.
Gilbert patted his back, his voice trembling with relief. "You're okay," he repeated, "It's good, it's good you're okay."
Warren, a bit dissatisfied, asked, "Dad, why didn't you send someone to rescue us earlier? I suffered a lot. I almost died here!"
Gilbert looked awkward. "Let's not talk about that now. The important thing is you're okay! Let's go home."
Warren pointed to his classmates. "What about my teacher and classmates?"
At that moment, the white-clad soldiers approached. The leading officer asked, "I heard your school has a lot of supplies stored. Please show us the way; we need to take all the supplies back to the base."
Lily frowned, sensing something was off. Weren't they here to rescue people? Why were they asking about supplies instead?
Warren eagerly said, "The supplies are below the snow layer! But there's a mutated monster there. We don't dare to go!"
The soldiers discussed among themselves for a moment, and the officer said, "No problem, any monster that appears, we'll take care of it! Buddy, you lead the way for us!"
Warren's face turned pale. "I..."
He didn't want to return to that dangerous place. The officer reassured him, "Don't worry, we have experience dealing with mutated creatures. You don't need to worry!"
Despite his words, Warren was still very worried. After thinking for a moment, he suddenly gritted his teeth and pointed at Lily. "Actually, Mrs. Evans has always been in charge of searching for supplies. She knows better than I do where the supplies are!"
To ensure his own safety, Warren didn't hesitate to betray Lily, who had protected them for so long. Many classmates looked at him with disdain.
Lily's heart sank, but she just sighed and stepped forward. "I'll lead the way."
Several soldiers came over to confirm Lily's identity, then followed her down. The other students approached, asking the soldiers how they would be accommodated.
"Don't worry, you'll be taken care of later," a soldier responded coldly. The students didn't dare to ask further. They felt that the atmosphere was a bit off, not quite what they had imagined.
After a while, two soldiers came out and told the students, "Come help carry the supplies!"
The students obediently followed. Since Fluffy had left, there was no danger below. The soldiers directed the students to pack up all the supplies they found and carry them to the snow surface.
