Chapter 420 Underground

The sudden change left everyone on high alert.

They weren't afraid of human forces, but they held a deep respect for the unknown.

Since the apocalypse, more and more things had become incomprehensible.

This even reminded Steven of a saying from history books.

In years of rampant disasters, ghosts would appear.

The group didn't drive but cautiously followed the dense footprints.

The wind and snow were heavy, and everyone was extremely tense.

Perhaps now, they were all worried about seeing those corpses walking in human form.

They walked for an unknown amount of time without seeing the footprints disappear or any corpses appear.

This made them even more certain that the corpses had walked here on their own two feet.

Steven took a deep breath. "Let's drive and follow them! It looks like they walked a long way overnight."

Although everyone was wearing combat suits, staying in the icy snow for too long was still uncomfortable.

So Steven got in the car and slowly followed the direction of the footprints.

After driving for dozens of minutes, they finally reached the place where the footprints disappeared.

Steven and a few others got out of the car and quickly walked forward.

Then they saw a huge, deep cave in the snow!

The dark snow pit was bottomless, with no light inside, but it exuded a terrifying aura as if it wanted to devour people!

Steven couldn't help but swallow and took a few steps back. "What the hell is this place? Why would those corpses come here? Is there a Psychic out there controlling them?"

Lily couldn't help but blurt out, "But controlling thousands of corpses to walk this far? That kind of Psychic would be straight-up terrifying!"

The scene fell silent again.

Since the Ice Age began, over ten million people had died in Starlight City.

If someone could control so many corpses, they could easily destroy any force!

Earl's lips trembled as he said, "Could it be a zombie outbreak?"

He had watched many zombie movies and was deeply impressed by scenes of zombie sieges.

Steven shook his head.

"I wish it were that simple," he said, cracking a half-smile at Earl. "You really think a bunch of zombies could mess with us now?"

He could kill living people; a large group of slow-moving zombies that could be killed by destroying their brains would pose no threat to Steven and his group.

Steven added, "Besides, it's not even logical. In this freezing cold, those corpses would've turned into ice blocks. How could they walk around like they're alive? And look at the mess of footprints—they weren't exactly hopping forward, either!"

Earl nodded, "True. If there was a bunch of zombies bouncing around in this weather, that'd be kinda badass!"

Everyone discussed by the cave, but no one knew what was going on.

The unknown always instills fear.

Now Steven hoped they were zombies or something similar.

Rather than some mysterious, incomprehensible entity.

As they were discussing, Henry looked around and suddenly said, "This place looks familiar. It seems like a station."

"Hmm? What station?" Everyone looked at him curiously.

Henry gazed around and, through the few tall buildings, slowly confirmed his guess.

"I know where this is! It's Floral Springs Community!" He pointed at the ground. "And we're standing on top of its subway station."

Everyone glanced down at their feet.

In a flash, Steven got it. "So, these bodies—they must've gotten into the subway tunnel through the station, right?"

The subway was underground and now buried by snow, so it was about 100 feet below Steven and his group.

No wonder it looked like a deep cave.

Lily frowned. "So, something in the subway tunnel's controlling these bodies?"

Steven stroked his chin, staying noncommittal.

Since the apocalypse hit, everyone had been fighting to survive.

Steven wasn't shocked by the idea of survivors popping up anywhere.

Starlight City's subway system was massive, with stations spread out everywhere.

You could say there was a whole underground city beneath Starlight City!

When the blizzard hit, some people must've taken refuge down there.

Or maybe they were already in the subway when it all went down and never made it out.

If someone managed to survive this long, it wouldn't exactly be a miracle.

Steven was sure of one thing: there had to be a Psychic—or some alien thing—down there.

But what he couldn't figure out was why they'd need an army of corpses.

"Steven, what do we do?" Henry shot him a look. "If someone's pulling the strings on these corpses, they've gotta have more than just a thousand, right? The numbers could be insane. That kind of power would be tricky."

Earl chimed in, "Should we just blow this joint? Stop 'em from crawling out and coming after us."

Henry shot him a look. "Earl, are you for real? Do you have any clue how massive Starlight City's subway system is? You can't just blow up one exit and call it a day. You'd tip them off, and they'd pop up a few miles away at the next one."

Earl grimaced. "But the thought of a horde of undead lurking a few miles underground is freaking me out, man."

Steven cut in, "Let's leave 'em be for now! No beef with them, so let's not poke the hornet's nest. Stay clear of this place—no one gets near it, got it?"

He gestured for everyone to fall back.

The depths of that subway could be a death trap.

Unless it's absolutely necessary, Steven wasn't about to drag his crew into that mess.

"We're just gonna bail on this mystery?" Lily frowned.

Steven smirked. "Yep. If something goes wrong someday, it won't be just my problem."

As Henry said, Starlight City's subway system was extensive, covering the entire city.

Emerald Estate was on the city's edge, with only one subway line nearby.

If something went wrong one day, they could destroy it.

But in other forces' territories, the subway lines were more complex.

If something strange broke out, they would suffer first.

"Let's go! Leave it alone." Steven slowly retreated, turning to get in the car far from the subway cave entrance.

Although others had worried looks, they didn't dare to risk investigating and followed Steven back.

After returning to the shelter, they explained everything to everyone and reassured them.

"Don't worry, we'll live well inside the shelter. Even if zombies or something come out, we can easily handle them."

"We're not afraid of people, let alone some corpses."

Their shelter had many Psychics, so even a zombie outbreak could be easily managed.

Everyone felt a bit more at ease. Although they couldn't forget the incident, they weren't as tense.

However, Steven still had everyone rebuild the outer defenses.

The weapon systems had been mostly lost in previous battles, but some remained.

Setting up a defense line as a buffer for future conflicts was necessary.
