Chapter 481 Meeting Chase Again
After hours of back-and-forth, everyone finally agreed on a plan.
They all left the church to set up their defensive positions.
Steven's job was pretty straightforward. As part of the mobile team, he had to be ready to jump in wherever things got dicey.
After the meeting, he strolled over to Natasha.
"Hey, Ms. Carter, I need a favor."
Natasha looked up, her eyes deep and bright like a starry night, almost hypnotic.
She always had this blank look and barely spoke during the meeting, but Steven couldn't help but notice her. She was the leader of the Snowfall Cult, after all, and her abilities were pretty unique.
Thanks to her Frostheart, Nora had her own Supernatural ability, who was standing right next to Steven.
He admitted that he was super curious about Natasha.
Before Natasha could say anything, Neil stepped in between them.
He looked at Steven calmly, a practiced smile on his face. "Mr. Rogers, what can I do for you? Just let me know, and I'll take care of it."
"Ms. Carter is dedicated to serving the divine and can't be distracted by other tasks."
Steven raised an eyebrow. Neil was a bit too protective of Natasha, wasn't he?
There had to be something going on between them. Maybe they were a couple!
Steven thought about it but didn't really care about their personal lives.
"Here's the deal," he said. "I have a top-notch doctor with me."
Steven paused and looked Neil in the eye. "She's my girlfriend. But she's not a Psychic and can't fight. So I hope she can stay with Ms. Carter. How about it?"
Neil was still thinking it over. He didn't want to start a fight with Steven.
Out of all the big players in Starlight City, the one he was most wary of wasn't the other three groups with their big armed teams, but the mysterious Steven.
After all, Steven had taken down West Mountain Base and fended off the other factions' allied forces.
Even now, Neil couldn't figure out Steven's powers.
At that moment, Natasha stepped forward and said slowly, "Of course. Bringing your girlfriend to the battlefield shows your commitment to this fight, even at the risk of her safety."
"Plus, doctors are crucial support. Let her come to the church and stay with us!"
Steven smiled. "Great. And with her here, I'll do everything I can to keep the church safe. It's a win-win!"
With that, Steven turned and left the church.
Natasha and Neil watched him go, their expressions hard to read.
Especially Neil, who looked at Steven with a hint of unease.
"He's definitely the biggest wildcard in Starlight City!"
No wonder Neil kept a close eye on Steven. His rise was just too unbelievable, and everything he did was shocking.
Steven had started as a warehouse manager, a nobody in Starlight City.
But then he took down Brock Johnson's shelter, fought with West Mountain Base, and eventually wiped them out!
In the Battle of the Five Armies, he was a standout, almost single-handedly taking down most of the forces from Silverlake Base and Emberwick Base!
And in that battle, no one ever saw him, only felt the sting of his bullets.
When the zombie horde hit, everyone was scrambling.
But Steven? He'd already handled it and was chilling.
With experiences like that, how could he not be a legend?
"Let's just hope he doesn't turn against us," Neil muttered.
Steven left the church, looking to find Elinor and the others to fill them in on the meeting.
Just then, he spotted a familiar face.
Steven's eyes locked onto the figure, and the guy looked back.
Their eyes met, and Steven's eyebrows shot up in surprise.
There was a skinny middle-aged man with black-framed glasses, looking worn out as he walked past the church.
It was his old neighbor, Chase.
Steven had thought Chase and his family had been zombie chow back in Sunshine Community, not expecting to see him here.
Chase looked just as surprised to see Steven.
But he quickly turned away and walked off like he didn't know him.
Steven got the message.
The five major forces in Starlight City had complicated relationships and plenty of conflicts.
Now that Chase was with the Snowfall Cult, and as a Psychic, probably in some management role, acknowledging Steven could raise suspicions.
Steven didn't mind. He and Chase were never that close.
With Chase avoiding him, Steven didn't feel like going over to say hi either.
He headed to where they had parked the snowmobiles.
Lily was there, holding her Broadsword, chatting with a few others.
Everyone was amazed at how the Snowfall Cult followers lived.
People always feel happiness through comparison.
Looking at the Snowfall Cult now, it was like a massive slum. Most people were skin and bones, barely getting by.
For heating, they huddled together and shivered, with even firewood being scarce.
How could it compare to their situation?
They lived in warm, comfy luxury villas, enjoyed gourmet food every day, and had proper heating. Even their clothes were way better.
Their combat suits were great at keeping out the cold, with built-in batteries for heating.
They didn't look thick, but they were super warm and didn't restrict movement—all thanks to the superior living conditions Steven had set up for them.
Steven walked up and explained the meeting's outcome.
After listening, they weren't too surprised.
They had pretty much guessed this would happen when they came; they just didn't expect to be staying here for a while.
That was going to be a hassle. Like, what about going to the bathroom?
In this cold, taking off your pants and exposing your lower body was almost deadly!
The Snowfall Cult did have toilets. But they were underground, makeshift ones.
Even though it wasn't as cold underground, the smell in that enclosed space was unbearable, especially since they had to keep the waste for fuel or biogas production due to lack of resources.
The Snowfall Cult folks could handle it, but Steven and his group, used to better conditions, couldn't stand those toilets.
Steven said helplessly, "Everyone, hang in there! I'll set up two cars as toilets. One for men and one for women!"
"We've got plenty of resources, so there's no need to make ourselves suffer."
