Chapter 458 Go to Your House and Take a Look
Otha's words gave Neil a flicker of hope. "So, what's the plan?"
Otha shot him a cold look. "Can't spill the beans just yet. It's top secret. But give me three days, and you'll have your answer."
"Now, head back to your shelters and get your people in line as I instructed. I'll let you know if there's more."
Otha's mysterious vibe made everyone itch to ask more, but he just waved them off, signaling them to leave.
They had no choice.
After all, he was the envoy from Silvercrest District, and they knew better than to mess with Silvercrest's power.
The group got up and left the conference room.
Steven, hands in his pockets, was about to leave when Otha called out. "Steven, you stay!"
Everyone exchanged looks, wondering what Otha wanted with Steven alone.
But since Steven was the only one who had dealt with the zombie problem in his area, it made sense.
Steven raised an eyebrow and grinned, "Mr. Soderberg, what can I do for you?"
Otha walked over, and for the first time, a smile crept onto his pale, gaunt face. "Mind if I visit your place?"
Steven didn't see that coming. He frowned, instinctively wanting to say no.
Even though he knew Otha was from Silvercrest, his usual caution made him wary of letting strangers into his shelter.
Steven smiled, "My place isn't anything special. The big bases have way better setups."
Otha gave him a playful look and said slowly, "What, not gonna roll out the welcome mat?"
Steven quickly raised his hands and smiled, "No, no, it's not that!"
Otha said, "Relax. I'm not here to cause trouble, and we don't have any beef. No need to be so on edge."
Steven just smiled, staying silent. He always assumed the worst in people, cautious and suspicious of anyone he didn't know well.
Otha chuckled. "I just want to chat about how you took care of those zombie hordes."
He leaned in close to Steven's ear. "Plus, I've got some intel you might find interesting."
That got Steven's attention.
Silvercrest's intel was definitely more extensive than his.
After the apocalypse, Steven knew how crucial information was for survival and warfare.
So he had been tirelessly gathering all kinds of intel.
He glanced at Otha, thought for a moment, then smiled and nodded. "Alright, if you're that keen on visiting my base, I can't be rude."
After all, he was from Silvercrest, and it was best not to strain relations.
Otha followed Steven out, walking side by side.
It was clear Otha's attitude towards Steven was different from the others.
But Megan and the rest didn't mind. They were rivals with Steven, so hostility was natural. But to be fair, they also respected him.
With just a shelter and a few teammates, he managed to carve out a corner of Starlight City in the apocalypse, becoming a formidable rival. During this tough zombie crisis, Steven's crew was the only one that came out unscathed.
If that wasn't strength, what was?
As the group stepped outside, the tension in the air was still thick.
Oliver had one eye bandaged, making him look kind of ridiculous.
When the group emerged, they couldn't help but notice.
Leonard's expression shifted slightly. He had expected this, but seeing Oliver hurt still ticked him off.
"Oliver, what happened to your eye?" Leonard asked, his voice low and serious.
Oliver glanced at Lanny and Daron, who were smirking.
Looking down, he said, "It's nothing. Just got a little roughed up sparring with some guys from the investigation team."
Losing the fight was one thing, but whining to Leonard in front of all these big shots would be humiliating.
Plus, Oliver knew now wasn't the time to pick fights with folks from Silvercrest District.
Leonard shot a look at Lanny and Daron but kept quiet.
He just patted Oliver on the shoulder, ready to take him back to sort things out at Silverlake Base.
Otha, however, turned his gaze to Lanny and Daron. "Didn't I tell you not to mess with them?"
Otha's tone was icy, but there was no anger.
Lanny grinned and said, "These guys don't respect us. We gotta show them who's boss. That way, we won't have any trouble down the line!"
Otha adjusted his sunglasses and said calmly, "Don't do it again."
Lanny and Daron laughed, "Got it!"
They knew Otha well. He was just saying it, but in reality, showing strength was necessary.
Without it, why would they follow orders?
Steven stayed quiet. He was the least affected by all this from the start.
So he didn't need to rush or prove anything to anyone.
As for Megan, Leonard, and Sebastian, they had their own thoughts.
Oliver, as Leonard's right-hand man, was pretty strong.
If he got beat easily by the investigation team, it showed how tough they were.
In future dealings, they'd have to be more careful and not act recklessly.
Just as everyone was about to leave, a voice suddenly called out from a second-floor window.
"A zombie horde is coming!"
Steven looked up and saw a guy in his thirties, wearing a black combat suit and looking lean and mean.
He was holding a black sniper rifle, one Steven had never seen before. Its design was odd, like it absorbed all light.
He was Leandro McCall, the sniper of the investigation team.
Hearing Leandro's words, everyone knew something was up.
From a distance, a massive number of zombies were appearing. At a glance, there were thousands of them!
Sebastian said, his voice deep, "With so many of us here, it's no wonder these damn things were drawn in!"
The zombie horde crawled over the ruins, and seeing a bunch of living people ahead, their eyes gleamed with bloodlust.
They let out eerie growls and suddenly started sprinting from a distance, aiming for everyone in the area!
